COMET C/2010 H3 (SOHO)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Further to IAUC 9116, measurements by K. Battams and orbital
solutions by B. G. Marsden for a SOHO comet detected by J. Ruan are
given on MPEC 2010-H37 (together with additional remarks on other
possibly related objects). Battams notes that the object was
stellar in apperance, though at peak brightness there may have been
a hint of diffuseness in C2 images. This Marsden-group comet was
at perihelion on Apr. 19.9 TT, 11.6 days earlier than the
prediction by S. Nakano (ICQ 2009/2010 Comet Handbook, p. H12) from
the assumption (cf. MPEC 2004-X73) that C/1999 J6 = C/2004 V9.

Comet 2010 UT R.A.(2000)Decl. Inst. F MPEC
C/2010 H3 Apr. 18.938 01 47.2 +09 22 C2/3 JR 2010-H37

M. Knight, Lowell Observatory, presents plots of the
photometry of all three objects at website URL
http://www.lowell.edu/users/knight/research/1999j6.html, and from
the similarity suggests that the three are almost certainly one and
the same object. The uncalibrated data show C/2010 H3 brightening
from mag 9.0-9.5 at discovery to mag 5.5 at the final C2
observation on Apr. 19.56 UT, while in C3 the brightness was rather
steady at mag 7 from Apr. 19.61 to Apr. 20.2, fading to mag 8-9 by
Apr. 20.7. Knight adds that these three comets are brighter than
any other observed Marsden-group members (see website URL
http://www.lowell.edu/users/knight/docs ... tation.pdf).

COMET 81P/WILD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

T. L. Farnham, University of Maryland; and N. H. Samarasinha
and B. E. A. Mueller, Planetary Science Institute, report on
observations of comet 81P obtained at the Kitt Peak 2.1-m f/8
telescope during Mar. 20-25. When enhanced by removing a
temporally averaged coma profile (Schleicher and Farnham 2004, in
Comets II, University of Arizona Press, p. 449), images obtained
with a narrowband cometary CN filter reveal at least two arc-
shaped features that repeat periodically. It was determined that
the interval of repetition is 13.5 +/- 0.1 hours, presumably
representing the rotation period of the nucleus. Observational
coverage, spanning as much as 6.2 hours per night, is sufficient to
rule out any aliases of this period.
Visual total-magnitude and coma-diameter estimates: Mar. 8.50
UT, 9.6, 5'.5 (C. Wyatt, Walcha, NSW, Australia, 25-cm reflector);
Apr. 6.02, 8.8, 7' (U. Pilz, Leipzig, Germany, 12-cm refractor);
17.09, 9.3, 5' (J. J. Gonzalez, Asturias, Spain, 20-cm reflector).

COMET C/2010 H4 (SCOTTI)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

J. V. Scotti, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, reports his
discovery of a comet (discovery position tabulated below), slightly
diffuse and showing a tail to the west-northwest, with the 0.9-m
f/3 Spacewatch reflector (+ CCD mosaic) at Kitt Peak. His follow-
up observations with the 1.8-m f/2.7 reflector on Apr. 20.35 UT
showed a coma of diameter 4" and a tail extending 0'.75 in p.a. 288
deg. After announcement on the Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP'
webpage, further follow-up observations by W. H. Ryan at Magdalena
Ridge (2.4-m reflector) on Apr. 21.4 showed a faint tail in p.a.
290 deg. S. Foglia, P. Miller, and J. Wood report that images
taken on Apr. 21.6 with the 2.0-m f/10 'Faulkes Telescope South' at
Siding Spring show a 15" tail in p.a. 295 deg.

COMET P/2010 H2 (VALES)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B. Yang and G. Sarid, University of Hawaii, report that near-
infrared (0.8- to 2.5-micron) spectra of comet P/2010 H2 were taken
with the 3.0-m NASA Infrared Telescope Facility atop Mauna Kea on
Apr. 20 and 22 UT. Two broad absorption bands were detected,
centered at 1.5 microns (the depth being 4 percent of the continuum)
and 2.0 microns (8 percent deep), in the reflectance spectra.
These features, which appeared on both nights, are consistent with
abundant water-ice grains in the central coma. In addition, a
narrow absorption band was found at 1.65 microns, which strongly
indicates the presence of crystalline ice. These preliminary
results show that the temperature of the observed ice particles is
about 100 +/- 20 K.

On IAUC 9123, '2009 QY_6 AND 2010 CG_55', last line, (20461)
1999 LD_31 is named Dioretsa.

V5586 SAGITTARII = NOVA SAGITTARII 2010 No. 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As first announced on CBET 2261, K. Nishiyama (Kurume, Japan)
and F. Kabashima (Miyaki, Japan) report their discovery of a
possible Milky Way nova (mag 11.2) on two unfiltered CCD frames
(limiting mag 13.2) taken around Apr. 23.782 UT using a 105-mm f/4
camera lens (+ SBIG STL6303E camera). They used five deeper
unfiltered CCD frames taken around Apr. 23.791 with a Meade 0.40-m
reflector to measure the following precise position for the
variable: R.A. = 17h53m02s.99 +/- 0s.01, Decl. = -28o12'19".4 +/-
0".1 (equinox 2000.0). A USNO-B1.0-catalogue star of red mag 17.4
has position end figures 03s.11, 19".0. Additional magnitudes for
the variable (via unfiltered CCD, and from Nishiyama and Kabashima,
unless noted otherwise): 1996 Sept. 12, [17.5 (Digitized Sky
Survey, red plate); 2010 Apr. 2.831, [12.9; 16.749, [13.1; 20.262,
[11.0 (W. Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile; Kodak TP film, orange filter,
85-mm camera lens); 24.660, 11.1 (T. Yusa, Osaki, Japan, 0.30-m
reflector; position end figures 02s.98, 19".3); 24.673, 11.6;
24.752, I_c = 10.21 (H. Maehara, Kwasan Observatory, Kyoto
University, 25-cm telescope + CCD); 24.754, R_c = 12.47 (Maehara);
24.755, V = 15.33 (Maehara). Further observations appear on CBET
2264.
L. A. Helton, T. Vonderharr, and C. E. Woodward, University of
Minnesota; and G. J. Schwarz, American Astronomical Society, report
on Boller-and-Chivens spectroscopic observations (range 380-930 nm;
resolution about 0.28 nm) of this object, obtained at the Steward
Observatory Bok 2.29-m telescope on Apr. 25.4 UT. These
observations confirm that this is a post-maximum classical nova.
The spectra exhibit strong, broad H_alpha emission (FWHM about 4000
km/s) with a flux of F = 1.4 x 10**-11 erg/s/cm^2. No other
emission lines are readily apparent blueward of H_alpha. Permitted
emission from O I 844.6-nm (FWHM about 3350 km/s; F = 1.7 x 10**-11
erg/s/cm^2) and 777.3-nm (FWHM about 3400 km/s) dominates the red
spectrum. H_alpha and O I 777.3-nm both have asymmetric line
profiles with a single blue peak. The emission lines are
superimposed on a continuum that rises sharply to the red. The
lack of any blue emission lines in the spectrum, along with the
climbing red continuum, suggests that this object is subjected to
an exceptionally high degree of extinction. The red spectrum is
similar to that of Nova Pup 1991 (V351 Pup; Williams et al. 1994,
Ap.J. Suppl. 90, 297), which suggests that the remaining features
dominating the red spectrum are likely due to multiplet emission
from Mg II (1,7,8), N I (1,2,15), and Na I (19).
E. Kazarovets, Russian Academy of Sciences, writes that the
permanent GCVS designation V5586 Sgr has been assigned to this nova.

COMET C/2010 FB_87 (WISE-GARRADD)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An apparently asteroidal object reported by WISE (discovery
observation tabulated below) was briefly on the Minor Planet
Center's 'NEOCP' webpage in early April and then given the
designation 2010 FB_87 (see MPS 320849). An independent discovery
reported from the Siding Spring Survey (0.5-m Uppsala Schmidt
telescope) by G. J. Garradd (discovery observation also tabulated
below) as comaless but showing a possible extremely faint 10" tail
in p.a. 290 deg (on a stack of four images) was later placed on the
NEOCP. Follow-up observations measured by S. Foglia, P. Miller,
and J. Wood from a 30-s CCD exposure by Wood with the 2.0-m
'Faulkes Telescope South' (also at Siding Spring) on Apr. 23.6 UT
shows a soft aspect with a 15" tail in p.a. 140 deg.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COMET C/2009 UG_89 (LEMMON)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An apparentely asteroidal object discovered by the Mt. Lemmon
Survey last October (discovery observation tabulated below), and
designated 2009 UG_89 (cf. MPEC 2009-U123; MPS 300946), has been
found to show a coma on CCD images taken by H. Sato (Ota-ku, Tokyo,
Japan, 25-cm reflector) on 2010 Apr. 21.4 (8" coma, mag 18.5), 23.4
(9" condensed coma), and 25.4 UT (12" diffuse coma). J. Scotti,
Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, writes that CCD images taken by R.
McMillan with the Spacewatch 1.8-m reflector on Apr. 25.5 show a
stellar head with a 0'.11 tail in p.a. 188 deg.

The following orbital elements by G. V. Williams (from 64
observations, 2009 Oct. 22-2010 Apr. 27; MPEC 2010-H68) suggest an
approach to within 0.50 AU of Jupiter on 2009 Sept. 24 (prior to
then, the heliocentric orbit varied between elliptical and
hyperbolic): Epoch = 2010 Dec. 30.0 TT, T = 2010 Dec. 16.2659 TT,

321.0084 deg, i = 130.1001 deg, equinox 2000.0). With respect to
the solar-system barycenter, the original orbit is elliptical (1/a
= +0.00016198).
