SUPERNOVA 2010eu

Denis Vida, Valpovo, Croatia, reports the discovery by the La Sagra Sky
Survey (LSSS) supernova search team (Filip Novoselnik, Denis Vida, Ivica
Skokic, Robert Gregic, David Gostinski, Salvador Sanchez, Jaime Nomen, Reiner
Stoss, Bill Yeung, Juan Rodriguez, and Miguel Hurtado) of an apparent
supernova (mag 18.7) on three CCD images (limiting magnitude about 20.0)
taken on June 20.112, 20.125, and 20.138 UT with a 45-cm telescope in the
course of the LSSS. The new object is located at R.A. = 21h31m36s.16, Decl.
= +12d28'51".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is 7".4 south and 5".8 east of the
nucleus of the apparent host galaxy (which has position end figures 35s.8,
58".5). Nothing is visible at this position on a Digitized Sky Survey image
from 1987 Sept. 26 (limiting red mag 22) or on a Sloan Digital Sky Survey
image from 2000 Sept. 27 (limiting infrared mag 22.3). R. Stoss writes
that 96 stacked 90-s CCD images taken with the 40-cm f/10 reflector at the
Observatorio de La Sagra in bright moonlight on June 27.07 yields mag 18.8
and position end figures 36s.17, 50".5 for 2010eu.

SUPERNOVA 2010ev IN NGC 3244

G. Pignata, M. Cifuentes, Universidad Andres Bello; J. Maza, M. Hamuy, R.
Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P. Gonzalez, S. Silva, G. Folatelli, R. Cartier, F.
Forster, and S. Marchi, Universidad de Chile; B. Conuel, Wesleyan University;
and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, J. Haislip, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander,
and A. LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of the
CHASE project, report their discovery of an apparent supernova (mag
approximately 14.3 +/- 0.2) on an unfiltered image taken on June 27.05 UT
with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 1' telescope located at Cerro Tololo. The new object,
which was confirmed at mag approximately 13.7 in an unfiltered image taken
with the 'PROMPT 3' telescope on June 29.99, is located at R.A. = 10h25m28s.99
+/- 0".1, Decl. = -39o49'51".2 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 1".6
east and 12".4 south of center of the galaxy NGC 3244. Nothing is visible at
this position on archival images taken on May 1.01 (limiting mag 18.5) and
Apr. 28.02 (limiting mag 18.0).
Prior to the confirming image by CHASE (above), 2010ev was posted on
the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage. Several hours after that
posting, C. Jacques (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) reported the independent
discovery of 2010ev in the course of the Brazilian Supernovae Search (by C.
Colesanti, E. Pimentel, T. Napoleao, and himself), noting mag 15.0 and
position end figures 29s.06, 50".7 (offset 5".4 east, 10".5 south) on their
unfiltered CCD image (limiting magnitude 18.0) taken with a 0.30-m Schmidt-
Cassegrain f/3 reflector at the CEAMIG-REA Observatory on June 28.89 UT,
adding that nothing is visible at this position on a CCD image taken on
2005 Jan. 15.12 (limiting magnitude 18.5) or on a Palomar Sky Survey plate
from 1984 Feb. 3 (limiting red mag 19.5).
Also, Greg Bock (Windaroo, Queensland, Australia) reports that
Stuart Parker (Oxford, Canterbury, New Zealand) obtained a 25-s unfiltered
CCD image (limiting red mag 18.2) with a 35-cm Celestron C14 f/6.3 reflector
(+ ST10 CCD camera) on June 27.05 UT, showing 2010ev at red mag 14.8 and
position end figures 28s.94, 51".9 (offset 1".9 east, 11".4 south), as
measured by Bock.

COMET P/2010 K2 (WISE)

An object reported by the WISE spacecraft without description
(discovery observation tabulated below), and posted on the Minor
Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage, has been found by ground-based
astrometrists to show cometary appearance. J. V. Scotti, Lunar and
Planetary Laboratory, reports that CCD images taken with the
Spacewatch 1.8-m f/2.7 reflector on June 3.15 UT show the object to
be diffuse with a coma of mag 20.2-20.4 and diameter 7", and a tail
0'.25 long in p.a. 110 deg; images with the same telescope on June
4.2 show a 5" coma of mag 20.2-20.4 and a 0'.25 tail in p.a. 113
deg. Images taken by A. C. Gilmore and P. M. Kilmartin with the
Mount John 1.0-m f/7.7 reflector on June 4.3 show a head of stellar
appearance with a possible 9" tail in p.a. 110 deg on two 200-s CCD
exposures. A. Mainzer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has subsequently
reported that this object is almost as bright as C/2010 J4 (which
was around mag 19 at discovery; cf. IAUC 9147) in 12-micron W3
images, noting that a coma extends about 20" in diameter, with a
tail that extends approximately 20" in p.a. about 43 deg; the
comet was detected in a couple of dozen 12- and 22-micron WISE
images.

COMET P/2010 L1 (WISE)

A. Mainzer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, reports the discovery
of a comet on 12- and 22-micron images taken by the WISE spacecraft
(discovery observation tabulated below), noting the object to have
a coma diameter of about 20", a tail > 100" in p.a. 180 deg, and a
brightness at 12 microns that is about ten times fainter than
P/2010 K2 (cf. IAUC 9150). After posting on the 'NEOCP' webpage,
ground-based CCD astrometrists have also noted the object's
cometary appearance. J. V. Scotti reports that CCD images taken in
growing twilight with the Spacewatch 1.8-m f/2.7 reflector on June
6.5 UT show the object to be of mag 21.6 and perhaps slightly
diffuse. Subsequent CCD images taken on poor (3") seeing on June
8.4 with the Steward Observatory's Bok 2.3-m f/3 reflector by
Scotti, J. A. Larsen, R. S. McMillan, and G. Bechetti show the
object to be diffuse compared to neighboring stars. R. Miles
writes that CCD images taken on June 7.60 with the 2.0-m f/10
"Faulkes Telescope North" at Haleakala show an asymmetric coma with
a total R-band magnitude of 20.2 (15"-diameter aperture) and a 10"

tabulated below from MPS 57859) whose orbit was good enough to
place the object within about 15" of the current position. Mainzer
notes that 2002 LN_13 is similar in brightness at 12 microns to
that of comet 233P/2009 WJ_50 on 2010 Feb. 6 (cf. IAUC 9117), when
that comet's optical total magnitude was around 20-22; she adds
that 2002 LN_13 is fainter but clearly detected at 22 microns. The
nuclear condensation is very small in the WISE images, about 9" in
diameter, but the tail extends about 100" toward the west-southwest.
Following a request to observe this object by the WISE team, R. S.
McMillan (University of Arizona) reports that CCD images taken with
the Spacewatch 1.8-m f/2.7 reflector (bandpass 500-900 nm) in good
seeing on June 15.4 UT show negligible coma, a nuclear condensation
that is no more than 1" wider than star images (with total mag
20.0-20.6), and a tail at least 1'.5 long and 6 deg wide toward p.a.
246 deg.

COMET C/2010 L3 (CATALINA)

An apparently asteroidal object discovered by the Catalina Sky
Survey (discovery observation tabulated below), and posted on the
Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage, has been found by other CCD
astrometrists to show cometary appearance. R-band images taken by
W. H. Ryan with the Magdalena Ridge Observatory 2.4-m f/8.9
reflector on June 15.4 and 16.3 UT show the object to be diffuse
with a distinct coma (mag 19.2-19.4) and a tail in p.a. about 80
deg. P. Birtwhistle (Great Shefford, Berkshire, England, 0.40-m
f/6 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector; June 16.0) notes that the object
appears to be slightly more diffuse than nearby stars of similar
brightness, with a diameter of about 6" and no tail. S. Foglia
writes that forty stacked 60-s exposures taken by R. Holmes
(Ashmore, IL, U.S.A., 0.61-m astrograph; June 16.3) show a round
coma of diameter 6". E. Guido, Castellammare di Stabia, Italy,
reports that 25 stacked 120-s images taken by G. Sostero and
himself remotely with a 0.25-m f/3.4 reflector located near Mayhill,
NM, U.S.A., on June 16.3 show a coma that is about 12" in diameter.
D. Balam reports that images obtained on June 16.34 with the 1.82-m
Plaskett telescope of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory
(National Research Council of Canada) show that the object has a
coma of diameter 6". H. Sato (Ota-ku, Tokyo, Japan) writes that
his images, taken remotely with a 0.25-m f/3.4 reflector at the RAS
Observatory near Mayhill on June 16.4, show a condensed coma of
diameter 8" and total mag 19.0.

COMET C/2010 L4 (WISE)

A. Mainzer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, reports the discovery
of a comet on 12- and 22-micron images taken by the WISE spacecraft
(discovery observation tabulated below), noting the object to have
a "hazy" coma of diameter about 15", with a fan-shaped tail
extending about 30" toward the west; she adds that this comet is
approximately as bright as comet P/2010 D1 was when WISE first
observed that object (cf. IAUC 9118), which was around mag 21
optically. After posting on the 'NEOCP' webpage, ground-based CCD
astrometrists have also noted the object's cometary appearance.
W. H. Ryan (Magdalena Ridge Observatory, 2.4-m reflector) reports
that R-band images taken on June 18.25-18.30 UT show a distinct
coma of mag 18.9-19.5. S. Foglia reports that exposures taken by
R. Holmes (Ashmore, IL, U.S.A., 0.81-m telescope, June 18.4) show a
coma diameter of 5" with magnitude 19.5-20.0. R. Miles writes that
an exposure taken on June 18.44 with the 2.0-m f/10 "Faulkes
Telescope North" at Haleakala in 1".3 seeing shows the object in a
crowded star field to be diffuse and about 2".5 across with a very
faint tail about 6" long in p.a. 250 deg.

COMET C/2010 L5 (WISE)

Amy Mainzer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, reports the discovery
of a relatively bright comet (discovery observation tabulated below)
that is visible in all four bands of the WISE spacecraft; the coma
is at least 30" in diameter at 12 microns, and the fan-shaped tail
is 160" long, pointing to the west-southwest. After posting on the
Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage, ground-based CCD
astrometrists have confirmed the object's cometary appearance.
G. J. Garradd reports that images taken on June 20.83 UT with the
0.5-m Uppsala Schmidt telescope at Siding Spring show a condensed
coma of total mag 18.2 and a 30" fan toward the southwest. S.
Foglia writes that images taken remotely by L. Buzzi, P. Concari, G.
Galli, M. Tombelli, and himself with a 0.15-m f/7.3 refractor at
the Tzec Maun Observatory, Moorook, Australia, on June 22.48 show
the object to be diffuse. H. Sato (Ota-ku, Tokyo, Japan) found a
weak, condensed coma of diameter 10" and total mag 18.9 on images
taken remotely with a 0.40-m f/9.1 reflector at the RAS Observatory,
Moorook, on June 23.4.
