SUPERNOVA 2010dn IN NGC 3184

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Koichi Itagaki
(Teppo-cho, Yamagata) of an apparent supernova (mag 17.5) on unfiltered CCD
frames (limiting mag 19.0) taken on May 31.523 UT using a 0.60-m f/5.7
reflector (+ Bitran BT-214E camera). The new object is located at R.A. =
10h18m19s.89, Decl. = +41d26'28".8 (equinox 2000.0), which is 33" east and
61" north of the center of NGC 3184. Nothing is visible at this position on
Itagaki's past images taken on 2009 Mar. 30.612 (limiting mag 19.0) and on
2010 May 21.503 (limiting mag 18.0) or on the Digitized Sky Survey.
Itagaki's discovery image has been posted at the following website URL:
http://www.k-itagaki.jp/images/psn3184.jpg. After posting on the Central
Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, T. Yusa (Osaki, Japan) writes that
fourteen co-added 60-s unfiltered CCD exposures (limiting mag 19.5) taken
on June 1.48 with a 0.30-m f/8.2 reflector (+ SBIG ST-6 camera) yield mag
17.1 and position end figures 19s.84, 28".4 for 2010dn.

2010dn IN NGC 3184

J. Vinko, University of Szeged; G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center
for Astrophysics and University of Texas; J. C. Wheeler, University of Texas;
and R. J. Foley and R. P. Kirshner, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics, report that 2010dn (cf. CBET 2299) is probably an outburst of a
luminous blue variable (LBV). A spectrum, obtained on June 2.12 UT with the
9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by S.
Rostopchin, shows prominent, narrow Balmer lines in emission, superimposed on
a moderately blue continuum corresponding to a blackbody temperature of about
6500 K (assuming no interstellar extinction). No broad spectral features are
obvious, but both the Ca II near-infrared triplet and the [Ca II] features at
730 nm are visible. The [Ca II] feature may be associated with circumstellar
dust (cf. Foley et al. 2010, http://lanl.arxiv.org/abs/1002.0635) and could
explain the non-detection of the progenitor in pre-explosion Hubble Space
Telescope images (Berger 2010, http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=2655).
The FWHM of H-alpha is 1200 km/s, while the equvalent width of the Na D
feature is 0.33 nm, indicative of a relatively large host reddening.
According to SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), the spectrum is
most similar to several LBV spectra. The faintness of the transient (mag
about 17; cf. CBET 2299), corresponding to absolute magnitude -13.4 at the
distance of the host (about 12 Mpc), gives further evidence that 2010dn is
a giant LBV outburst, and not a supernova.

Williams, California Institute of Technology; R. McNaught and G. Garradd,
Australian National University; J. L. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories; and
E. C. Beshore and S. M. Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University
of Arizona, report the CRTS discovery of a supernova in unfiltered Siding
Spring Survey images:

SN 2010 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
2010dp May 18.42 9 32 03.70 - 5 53 38.1 16.7 1".8 S

Further magnitudes for 2010dp: Apr. 13.13 UT, [19.2 (Catalina Sky
Survey); May 30.12, 17.0 (J. Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia; unfiltered

SUPERNOVAE 2010do, 2010dw, 2010dt

P. Challis, R. Foley, G. H. Marion, and R. Kirshner, Harvard-Smithsonian
Center for Astrophysics (CfA); and J. Ruel, Physics Department, Harvard
University, on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, report on spectroscopic
observations that were obtained of 2010do, 2010dt, and 2010dw by P. Berlind
on June 7 UT with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST;
range 360-760 nm) and of 2010do by R. J. Foley and J. Ruel on June 8 with the
Magellan telescope (+ IMACS; range 630-950 nm).
SN 2010do (cf. CBET 2301) is a type-Ic supernova near maximum light.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) finds
that the spectrum of 2010do is similar to that of SN 1994I at maximum light.
However, the presence of weak He I features cannot be ruled out. Using
4382 km/s as the heliocentric velocity for the host galaxy (Paturel et al.
2003, A.Ap. 412, 57), the velocity for Ca II is about 14000 km/s, measured
at the absorption minima of features from the H and K lines and the
infrared triplet. C II lines at 658.0 and 723.5 nm are measured at about
6000 km/s.
SNID indicates that 2010dw (cf. CBET 2310) is a normal type-Ia
supernova a few days before maximum light, and 2010dt (cf. CBET 2307) is a
normal type-Ia supernova near maximum light.

I. K. W. Kleiser, S. B. Cenko, J. M. Silverman, and A. V. Filippenko,
University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a CCD spectrum
(range 340-980 nm), obtained on June 8 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+
Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that SN 2010do is a normal type-Ic supernova.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the SNID code of
Blondin and Tonry (2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2010do is about two
days after maximum light.

NO SUPERNOVA 2010db

P. Challis, R. Foley, G. H. Marion, and R. Kirshner, Harvard-Smithsonian
Center for Astrophysics (CfA); and J. Ruel, Physics Department, Harvard
University, on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, report on spectroscopic
observations that were obtained of 2010db (cf. CBET 2290) by P. Berlind on
June 7 UT with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST; range
360-760 nm). The spectrum of 2010db appears to be that of an M-type star
with significant proper motion. The star was at R.A. = 18h26m12s.958,
Decl. = +30d14'26".34 (equinox 2000.0, FK5) in a red Digitized Sky Survey
(DSS) image from 1989 May 3, and at position end figures 11s.808, 21".05
in a DSS infrared image from 1995 Sept. 12. W. Brown, CfA, notes that this
star was designated LSR J1826+3014 = LSPM J1826+3014 when reported by Lepine
et al. (2002, Ap.J. 581, L47; 2005, A.J. 129, 1483) with magnitudes V = 19.4,
I = 14.4, and K = 10.8 and proper motion of 2.382 arcsec/yr.

SUPERNOVA 2010dd IN UGC 10594

D. Young, P. R. Dunstall, S. Valenti, and S. Smartt, Queens University;
and M. Sullivan and I. Hook, Astrophysics Department, Oxford University,
report that a spectrum of 2010dd (cf. CBET 2294) was obtained at the William
Herschel Telescope (+ ISIS; range 320-1000 nm) on June 8.98 UT, showing
2010dd to be a type-Ia supernova at two months after explosion. Cross-
correlation of the observed spectrum with a library of supernova spectra has
been performed with the "GELATO" code (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488,
383, available at website URL https://gelato.tng.iac.es/login.cgi). The
spectrum of 2010dd is similar to that of SN 2000fa (IAUC 7533) at 40 days
past maximum at a redshift of z = 0.03.

SUPERNOVA 2010dx IN NGC 7038

G. Pignata and M. Cifuentes, Universidad Andres Bello; J. Maza, M. Hamuy,
R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P. Gonzalez, S. Silva, G. Folatelli, R. Cartier, F.
Forster, and S. Marchi, Universidad de Chile; B. Conuel, Wesleyan University;
and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, J. Haislip, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander,
and A. LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of
the CHASE project, report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag
approximately 17.4 +/- 0.3) on an unfiltered image taken on June 8.17 UT with
the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 1' telescope located at Cerro Tololo. The new object is
located at R.A. = 21h15m11s.09 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -47o13'34".3 +/- 0".1
(equinox 2000.0), which is about 36".4 east 20".2 south of the center of the
galaxy NGC 7038. Nothing is visible at this position on archival images
taken on May 10.34 and Apr. 28.30 (limiting mag 18.5). SN 2010dx is also
present in images taken on June 9.19 (at mag approximately 17.1) and June
1.28 (at mag approximately 17.0).

SUPERNOVA 2010cl IN MCG -02-25-20

N. Morrell and M. Phillips, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project,
report that a spectrum (range 380-940 nm) of 2010cl (cf. CBET 2266) was
obtained on May 21.0 UT with the 6.5-m Magellan II Clay telescope (+ LDSS3)
at Las Campanas Observatory, which reveals that this is a type-II supernova.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the Supernova
Identification Tool of Blondin and Tonry (2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) yields good
matches with a number of type-II-P events at 1 month or more after explosion,
with 2006bp at +34 days being the best comparison. A radial velocity of 2602
km/s is measured from narrow H II region emission at the position of the
supernova. The minimum of the H-alpha absorption is found to be blueshifted
with respect to this velocity by roughly 7400 km/s.

SUPERNOVA 2010do IN NGC 5374

D. D. Balam, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, National Research
Council of Canada, reports that an image taken with the 1.82-m Plaskett
Telescope on June 8.25 UT shows SN 2010do (cf. CBETs 2301, 2311) to be
23".4 west and 1".2 south of the core of NGC 5374, conciding with a bright
knot in a spiral arm but noting that 2010do is several magnitudes brighter
than the knot. He provides the following photometry for 2010do
(differential from the star J135729.97+060804.8, with Sloan Digital Sky
Survey DR6 magnitudes converted to Kron-Cousins using the conversion
formulae of Chonis and Gaskell 2007, A.J. 135, 264): V = 16.69, B-V =
+0.28, V-R = +0.20.

SUPERNOVA 2010dy

S. Leonini, Siena, Italy, reports the discovery by S. Leonini and G.
Guerrini of an apparent supernova (mag about 17.9) on unfiltered CCD image
(limiting mag about 19.8) taken on 2010 June 6.947 UT during the Montarrenti
Observatory Supernovae Search program using a 0.53-m f/7.8 Ritchey-Chretien
telescope (+ Apogee Alta U47 CCD camera). Confirming images taken on June
9.847 and 9.888 show 2010dy at mag about 17.6. The new object is located at
R.A. = 16h10m11s.03, Decl. = +0d45'07".5 (equinox 2000.0), which is 9" east
and 5" south of the nucleus of the galaxy PGC 1174551. Nothing is visible at
this position in their numerous past images, including one taken on 2010 May
19.097 (limiting mag about 19.5), and 2010dy does not appear on Palomar Sky
Survey infrared, red, and blue plates (1984 July 17, F plate, limiting mag
20.3; 1987 May 3, J plate, limiting mag 20.3; 1991 June 15, N plate, limiting
mag 19.5). The discoverers have posted their discovery image at the following
website URL: http://www.jacopobaldi.it/dati/PSN%20in ... 174551.jpg.
Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, D.
Milisavljevic and R. Fesen, Dartmouth College, report confirmation of 2010dy,
based on low-dispersion optical spectra (range 500-830 nm) obtained with the
2.4-m Hiltner telescope (+ CCDS) at MDM Observatory on June 10.3 UT.
Comparison with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" tool (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows
that the spectrum of 2010dy closely matches that of the type-Ia supernova
2002bo around maximum light. The redshift z = 0.043 determined by SNID
agrees with the redshift of the nearby galaxy catalogued by the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey (SDSS J161010.57+004512.1).

SUPERNOVA 2010dz

J. Newton and T. Puckett reported the discovery of a possible supernova
(mag 18.1) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 18.8) taken with a 0.40-m
reflector at Portal, AZ, U.S.A., on May 31.26 UT in the course of the
Puckett Observatory Supernova Search. The new object, which was confirmed at
mag 18.1 on images (limiting mag 18.9) taken by T. Orff on June 2.22 with a
0.40-m reflector at Portal, is located at R.A. = 13h50m44s.39, Decl. =
+17o03'58".5 (equinox 2000.0), which is 132" west and 47" north of the center
of UGC 8755. Nothing is visible at this position on images taken by Puckett
on 2010 May 20 (limiting mag 19.2) or in any images of this galaxy taken by
Puckett over the past ten years.
After posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage,
D. D. Balam, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, National Research Council of
Canada, reports that he finds an object with magnitude V = 19.35, colors B-V
= 0.0 and V-R = +0.15, and position end figures 44s.42, 58".4 on CCD images
(limiting mag around 21.8) taken with the 1.82-m Plaskett Telescope on June
8.29 UT, adding that there is a very faint galaxy very close to that position,
which has magnitudes g = 22.0, r = 21.6, and i = 21.6 in the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey (position end figures 44s.29, 58".6, with Balam's independent
astrometry agreeing to within the measuring uncertainty), with 2010dz being
located 1".4 east of the very faint galaxy. Another faint galaxy (with g =
22.2, r = 21.4; SDSS J135044.39+170405.6) is located 7".1 due south of 2010dz.
Nothing is visible at the position of 2010dz on the SDSS images to a limiting
magnitude fainter than g = 22 (and perhaps near g = 23).
