SUPERNOVA 2010gb IN UGC 9947

T. Boles, Coddenham, England, reports the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag 16.5) on unfiltered CCD images taken on June 11.005 and 11.925
UT with a 0.35-m reflector. The new object is located at R.A. = 15h38m39s.79,
Decl. = +41o00'19".9 (equinox 2000.0), which is approximately 8".0 west and
1".8 north of the center of UGC 9947. Nothing is present at this position on
Boles' images from 2010 Feb. 19 and Apr. 21 (limiting mag 19.5) or on
Digitized Sky Survey plates from 1993 Apr. 17 (limiting red mag 20.5) and
1990 Mar. 31 (limiting blue mag 21.0).
After posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, F.
Ciabattari, S. Donati, E. Mazzoni, and M. Rossi, Borgo a Mozzano, Italy,
report their independent discovery of 2010gb on unfiltered CCD images obtained
on July 10.89 (limiting mag 18.5) and July 11.87-11.90 UT (limiting mag 18.7)
with a 0.5-m Newtonian reflector, noting mag 15.8 on July 10.89 and mag 16.2
on July 11; they measured position end figures 39s.80, 20".1, and add that
nothing is visible at this position on DSS plates from the Palomar Sky Survey
on 1993 Apr. 17 (F plate, limiting mag 20.3) and 1990 Mar. 31 (J plate,
limiting mag 20.3).

SUPERNOVA 2010gd IN UGC 11064

G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and University
of Texas; J. Vinko, University of Szeged; and J. C. Wheeler, University of
Texas, report that a spectrum (range 430-1000 nm) of 2010gd (cf. CBET 2368),
obtained on July 14.3 UT with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario
Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by S. C. Odewahn, shows prominent features of
Mg II 448.1-nm, the "W"-shaped Fe II feature around 500 nm, Na D, Si II
635.5-nm, O I 777.4-nm, and the strong Ca II near-infrared triplet,
characteristic of a type-Ic supernova near maximum brightness. No obvious
He I, C II, or C I features could be identified. SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007,
Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows a good match for templates from the normal type-Ic
supernova 1994I at, or a few days before, maximum light. SNID also identifies
possible fits to templates from type-Ia supernovae at about one week post-
maximum, but photometry from CBET 2368 shows that 2010gd was still brightening
on July 12. The redshift, estimated from a narrow H-alpha emission feature
(due to imperfect host-galaxy subtraction) is 0.023, in agreement with that of
the host galaxy, UGC 11064 (z = 0.0235; de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third
Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, ver. 3.9). The expansion velocity,
estimated from the Si II 635.5-nm feature, is 6100 km/s. This relatively low
velocity also supports the type-Ic classification (e.g., Hunter et al. 2009,
A.Ap. 508, 371).

SUPERNOVAE 2010gb, 2010gf, 2010gg

Jose L. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories, reports that optical spectra
(range 370-930 nm; resolution 0.7 nm) of 2010gb (cf. CBET 2366), 2010gf (cf.
CBET 2370), and 2010gg (cf. CBET 2371) were obtained with the APO 3.5-m
telescope (+ DIS) on July 18 UT. After cross-correlation with a library of
supernova spectra using SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), the
following spectral classes were determined: 2010gb is a normal type-Ia
supernova whose best spectral template is that of SN 2003cg at 11 days after
maximum light; 2010gf is a type-II supernova a few weeks after explosion,
with the best-fit spectral template being that of SN 1999em at 20 days after
explosion; and 2010gg is an old type-II supernova. After correcting for the
recession velocity of the host galaxy of SN 2010gb (UGC 9947, v = 6748 km/s;
Schneider et al. 1992, Ap.J. Suppl. 81, 5), a blueshift of the Si II (rest
635.5 nm) line is measured to be 11000 km/s. A blueshifted velocity of the
H-alpha P-Cyg profile for SN 2010gf is measured to be 4600 km/s after
correcting for the recession velocity of its host galaxy, UGC 633 (v = 5574
km/s; de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Reference Catalogue of Bright
Galaxies, via NED).

APPARENT NOVA IN M32

Kamil Hornoch, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov, reports his discovery
of a possible nova in the galaxy M32 on a co-added 900-s R-band CCD frame
taken on July 9.066 UT with the 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov. The new object
is marginally visible on single images used for the co-added frame and is
visible also on a pre-discovery co-added R-band CCD frame taken by Hornoch
and P. Hornochova with the same instrumentation on June 26.043, but it is
not present on numerous archive images taken at Ondrejov and other
observatories. The new object, designated M32N 2010-07a, is located at R.A.
= 0h42m32s.43, Decl. = +40o53'36".5 (equinox 2000.0), which is 107" west and
99" north of the center of M32. Available R-band magnitudes for M32N 2010-07a,
as measured by Hornoch: 2001 Nov. 22.321, [22.3 (A. Crotts, 8.2-m Subaru
telescope at Mauna Kea); 2006 Jan. 6.084, [21.5 (J. Gallagher and P. Garnavich,
0.91-m telescope at Kitt Peak); 25.086, [21.4 (Gallagher and Garnavich);
2009 Aug. 30.932, [21.2 (Hornoch, 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov); 2010 June
26.043, 19.2 +/- 0.25 (Hornoch and Hornochova, 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov);
July 9.066, 19.3 +/- 0.2 (Hornoch); 16.954, 19.5 +/- 0.15 (Hornoch and
Hornochova).

SUPERNOVA 2010gm IN MCG +07-36-25

T. Boles, Coddenham, England, reports the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag 17.9) on unfiltered CCD images taken on July 19.015 UT with a
0.35-m reflector. The new object is located at R.A. = 17h33m20s.87, Decl. =
+44o06'16".4 (equinox 2000.0), which is approximately 2".0 west and 5".8
south of the center of MCG +07-36-25. J. Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia,
using a remotely operated 50-cm reflector (+ STL6K camera + clear filter) at
New Mexico Skies observatory near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A., obtained a confirmation
image on July 20.147 (limiting mag 20.5); position end figures, measured by
Boles, are 20s.85 and 16".1. Nothing is present at this position on Boles'
images from 2010 Mar. 7 and May 10 (limiting mag 19.5) or on Digitized Sky
Survey plates from 1992 June 1 (limiting red mag 20.5) and 1990 Apr. 2
(limiting blue mag 21.0).

SUPERNOVA 2010gi IN IC 4660

M. Yamanaka, Hiroshima University; A. Arai, Kyoto Sangyo University;
and K. Sakimoto, T. Okushima, K. S. Kawabata, Hiroshima University, report
that they obtained low-resolution optical spectra of 2010gi (cf. CBET 2376)
on July 19.7 UT at Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory (resolution, R, of 400),
Hiroshima University, and at Koyama Astronomical Observatory (R = 500), Kyoto
Sangyo University. The spectra have broad absorption features at 540-580 and
590-620 nm, showing some resemblance to that of the type-IIb supernova 1993J
at a week before maximum light. If it is assumed that the features are He I
587.9-nm and H-alpha, the blue-shifts of their line centers correspond to
about -14000 km/s and -23000 km/s, respectively.
