SUPERNOVA 2010gp IN NGC 6240

J. Maza, M. Hamuy, R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P. Gonzalez, S. Silva, G.
Folatelli, R. Cartier, F. Forster, and S. Marchi, Universidad de Chile; G.
Pignata and M. Cifuentes, Universidad Andres Bello; B. Conuel, Wesleyan
University; and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, J. Haislip, A. Crain, D. Foster,
M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
on behalf of the CHASE project, report the discovery of an apparent supernova
(mag approximately 17.5 +/- 0.4) on an unfiltered image taken on July 14.10
UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 1' telescope located at Cerro Tololo. The new
object, which was confirmed at mag approximately 15.5 on July 22.97, is
located at R.A. = 16h52m57s.39 +/- 0".1, Decl. = +2o23'16".4 +/- 0".1
(equinox 2000), which is about 22" west and 47" south of the center of the
galaxy NGC 6240. Nothing is visible at this position on archival images
taken on June 7.13 (limiting mag 18.0) or in a stack five 80-s images taken
between Apr. 24.26 and June 5.13 (limiting mag 19.0). The type-IIn
supernova 2000bg also appeared in this galaxy (cf. IAUCs 7392, 7394).

SUPERNOVA 2010gq IN PGC 1142

Further to CBET 2381, on behalf of the "La Sagra Sky Survey (LSSS)"
Supernova Search Team, Filip Novoselnik reports the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag about 16.8) on three CCD images (limiting magnitude about 20.0)
taken on July 21.018-21.044 UT with a 0.45-m telescope. The new object is
located at R.A. = 0h17m25s.70 +/- 0s.16, Decl. = -0d58'37".7 +/- 0".4
(equinox 2000.0), which is 5".5 west and 8".2 north of the nucleus of the
galaxy PGC 1142. Additional approximate magnitudes for 2010gq: 2001 Aug.
24.7, [22 (Digitized Sky Survey; infrared plate); 2010 June 19.136, 16.5
(LSSS; pre-discovery); July 23.074, V = 17.5 (LSSS). A cropped image showing
2010gq marked on the June 19 exposure is posted at the following website URL:

SUPERNOVA 2010gk IN NGC 5433

J. M. Silverman, C. V. Griffith, M. T. Kandrashoff, and A. V.
Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection
of a low signal-to-noise ratio CCD spectrum (range 340-1080 nm),
obtained on July 19 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast) at Lick
Observatory, shows that SN 2010gk (CBET 2382) is likely of type-Ic
just after maximum brightness. The supernova shows evidence of being
fairly reddened; it has narrow Na I D absorption from the host galaxy
at an equivalent width of about 0.3 nm.

COMET P/2005 U1 = 2010 N2 (READ)

J. Pittichova, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii, reports
her recovery of comet P/2005 U1 on images obtained with the 2.2-m University
of Hawaii reflector at Mauna Kea::

2010 UT R.A. (2000) Decl. Mag.
July 7.43149 21 39 31.44 -15 56 44.3 23.6

Nothing was reported about the object's appearance. The indicated correction
to the prediction on MPC 62880 is Delta_T = -0.2 day.

The above observation and four others, measured with the help of S. R.
Chesley, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, together with a linked orbit and an
ephemeris, appear on MPEC 2010-O44.

H. Sato (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan) relayed the independent
discovery of 2010bj by Kuniaki Goto (Miyoshi city, Hiroshima prefecture) on
three unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag about 18.5) taken on Mar. 26.49
and 26.54 UT using a 35-cm f/11 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector (+ SBIG ST-8XME
camera), with 2010bj measured to be at mag about 16.4 with the position
given as R.A. = 7h17m36s, Decl. = +23d22'.0 (equinox 2000.0).

COMET P/2010 N1 (WISE)

Amy Mainzer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, reports the discovery
of a comet (discovery observation tabulated below) with a bright
nuclear condensation of diameter about 30" and a tail about 60"
long toward the southeast in WISE spacecraft images; at 12 microns,
the nuclear condensation appears to be about twice as bright as
P/2009 WJ_50 (cf. IAUC 9117) was on Feb. 6 (which was presumably
around mag 20-22 from ground-based CCD imaging in Feb.). After
posting on the Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage, D. Tholen
(University of Hawaii) reports that a stack of six 20-s exposures
made by queue observer J. Luthe with the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii
Telescope on July 10.3 UT shows a tail extending at least 10"
(maybe as much as 15") from an asymmetric head (mag 19.4-19.7) in
p.a. 110-115 deg.

2010 UT R.A. (2000) Decl. Observer
July 5.47876 13 32 07.62 + 6 26 19.2 WISE

The available astrometry (including pre-discovery observations at
Catalina back to Apr. 13), the following preliminary elliptical
orbital elements, and an ephemeris appear on MPEC 2010-N48.

Epoch = 2010 Sept. 1.0 TT

COMET C/2010 E6 (STEREO)

Further to IAUC 9151, K. Battams (Naval Research Laboratory)
adds that this was one of the brightest comets seen in coronagraph
spacecraft data, peaking around magnitude 1 near Mar. 12.625 UT.

COMET P/2010 J5 (McNAUGHT)

This comet (cf. IAUC 9148) has been shown to be of short
period; below are orbital elements from MPEC 2010-N30:

Epoch = 2009 Nov. 25.0 TT
T = 2009 Nov. 6.4523 TT Peri. = 150.3572
