SUPERNOVAE 2010hd, 2010hg, AND 2010hj

J. L. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories; and J. Fuentes, Las Campanas
Observatory, report that they obtained optical spectra (range 380-920 nm;
resolution 0.7 nm) of 2010hd (cf. CBET 2429), 2010hg (cf. CBET 2434), and
2010hj (cf. CBET 2438) on Sept. 10 UT with WFCCD mounted on the du Pont 2.5-m
telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. The SNID cross-correlation software
(Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) was used to aid identification and
age/redshift estimation. The spectrum of 2010hd resembles that of the
type-IIn supernova 1998S at 72 days after discovery (see Fassia et al. 2001,
MNRAS 325, 907); it is dominated by a strong, intermediate width (FWHM about
5600 km/s) H-alpha line in emission, He I and Fe II lines in absorption, and
the Ca II near-infrared triplet in emission. SN 2010hg is a type-Ia supernova
a couple days before maximum light; after correcting for the recession
velocity of the host galaxy, NGC 3001 (2464 km/s; H I Parkes All-Sky Survey
Final Catalog; Wong et al. 2006, MNRAS 371, 1855), a blueshift of the Si II
(rest 635.5 nm) profile is measured to be 10000 km/s. The spectrum of 2010hj
is that of a normal type-Ia supernova at approximately two months after
maximum light; the redshift obtained by SNID from the supernova spectrum is z
= 0.030 +/- 0.005.

Additional unfiltered CCD magnitudes for 2010hg from L. A. G. Monard in
Pretoria: Sept. 4.139 UT, 14.4; 5.138, 14.2; 6.140, 14.1; 7.136, 14.0;
8.138, 14.0; 9.137, 13.9.

SUPERNOVA 2010hv

G. Pignata and M. Cifuentes, Universidad Andres Bello; J. Maza, M. Hamuy,
R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P. Gonzalez, S. Silva, G. Folatelli, R. Cartier, F.
Forster, and S. Marchi, Universidad de Chile; B. Conuel, Wesleyan University;
and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, J. Haislip, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander,
and A. LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of
the CHASE project, report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag
approximately 15.6) on an unfiltered image taken on Aug. 28.07 UT with the
0.41-m 'PROMPT 3' telescope located at Cerro Tololo. The new object is
located at R.A. = 23h24m25s.30 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -19o02'14".4 +/- 0".1
(equinox 2000.0), which is on top of the nucleus of the galaxy 2MASX
J23242536-1902139. Nothing is visible at this position on archival images
taken on Aug. 2.15 (limiting mag 18.5), but 2010hv is also present in images
taken on Aug. 18.18 (mag approximately 15.1), on Aug. 24.11 (mag
approximately 15.4), and Aug. 31.10 (mag approximately 15.6).

An optical spectrum (range 360-920 nm) obtained with the Las Campanas
2.5-m du Pont telescope (+ WFCCD) on Sept. 14.2 UT by N. Morrell, Las Campanas
Observatory, Carnegie Supernova Project; and Ismael Botti and Paula Lopez,
Universidad de Chile, reveals that 2010hv is a type-II supernova, showing a
blue continuum with the characteristic P-Cyg profiles in the Balmer lines and
strong galactic contamination. A redshift of 7279 km/s (s.d. 13 km/s) is
derived from an average of ten emission lines from the underlying H II region,
superimposed on the supernova spectrum. Considering that redshift, the
minimum of the H-beta absorption is blueshifted by 7400 km/s. Interstellar
Na I absorption at the same redshift is observed with an E.W. of 0.08 nm.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the Supernova
Identification tool (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) suggests
that this supernova is of subtype II-p with ages ranging from 15 to 40 days.

SUPERNOVA 2010hc IN ESO 339-6

N. Morrell, Las Campanas Observatory, Carnegie Supernova Project; and
I. Botti and P. Lopez, Universidad de Chile, write that they obtained a
spectrogram (range 360-920 nm) of 2010hc (cf. CBET 2429) on Sept. 14.0 UT
with the Las Campanas 2.5-m du Pont telescope (+ WFCCD), which shows that
2010hc is an evolved type-Ib supernova. Cross-correlation with a library of
supernova spectra using the Supernova Identification tool (SNID; Blondin
and Tonry, 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) suggests for 2010hc a IIb subtype and
an age of roughly two months past explosion, with a best match to SN 1993J at
62 days after explosion. From prominent H-alpha emission of an underlying
H II region present in the supernova spectrum, a heliocentric redshift of
6064 km/s is computed, in excellent agreement with that derived by SNID.

COMET P/2010 R2 (LA SAGRA)

J. Nomen, La Sagra Observatory, writes that careful examination of
an object detected there on Sept. 14.9 UT (0.45-m f/2.8 reflector, discovery
position below) shows some diffuse structure, an appearance confirmed on
Sept. 16.0 as a north-south elongation with some coma extending about 8" in
p.a. 185 deg. Following a suggestion from the Minor Planet Center that the
same object had already been recorded at La Sagra on Aug. 13.0, he also
examined those images, but with no conclusive result about the appearance.
After announcement of the object on the NEOCP, P. Birtwhistle (Great Shefford,
Berkshire, England, 0.40-m f/6.0 Schmidt-Cassegrain) remarked that on
Sept. 17.0 the object had a strongly condensed coma of diameter 6" and a tail
6" wide and 11" long in p.a. 190 deg. On Sept. 17.1 R. Holmes and
S. Foglia (Westfield, Illinois, 0.61-m f/4.5 astrograph) noted a 5" coma and
a 15" tail in p.a. 165 deg, and on Sept. 17.2 J. V. Scotti (Spacewatch
1.8-m reflector) described the object as of stellar appearance, with an
obvious tail to the south.

SUPERNOVA 2010hx IN NGC 3258

L. A. G. Monard reports his discovery of an apparent supernova in the
nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 3258 on unfiltered CCD images taken at his
Bronberg Observatory, with the discovery observation tabulated below:

SN 2010 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
2010hx Sept. 16.122 10 28 51.06 -35 36 22.3 15.3 31" W, 2" S

A faint patch is shown near the position of 2010hx in a red image from the
Digitized Sky; this patch is not visible on Monard's own image from 2010 Aug
2.695 UT (limiting mag 18.5), but it is sometimes near the detection limit
on earlier images from there. Additional magnitudes for 2010hx: Sept.
17.121, 15.2; 18.129, 15.4.

SUPERNOVAE 2010hs, 2010hw, AND 2010hy

Further to CBET 2458, J. Kodros, S. B. Cenko, W. Li, and A. V. Filippenko,
University of California, report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova
on unfiltered KAIT images:

SN 2010 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag.
2010hy Sept. 4.19 18 59 32.89 +19 24 25.9 19.1

Additional KAIT magnitudes for 2010hy: a co-added frame from May-July,
[20.5; Sept. 5.22 UT, 19.1. SN 2010hy is located 50" west and 73" south
of UGC 11385, but the spectrum (see below) appears to indicate that it is
located in a background galaxy at significantly higher redshift.

S. B. Cenko, M. T. Kandrashoff, J. M. Silverman, and A. V. Filippenko,
University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of CCD spectra
(range 340-1000 nm), obtained on Sept. 16 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+
Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2010hy is a supernova, perhaps of type
Ic near maximum brightness, but the possibility that 2010hy is actually a
type-Ia supernova cannot be ruled out. The observed brightness, together with
the derived redshift of about 0.2 (from the supernova features), implies an
absolute visual magnitude of roughly -21, which is highly overluminous for
type-Ia and type-Ic supernovae. Higher quality spectra, as well as
continued photometry, should be obtained. Inspection of similar CCD spectra
shows that 2010hs (CBET 2454) is a type-Ia supernova; cross-correlation with a
library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification" code (SNID;
Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2010hs is near
maximum brightness. A noisy spectrum of 2010hw (CBET 2458) shows that it is a
type-II supernova.

SUPERNOVA 2010ia

G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on
behalf of the CfA Supernova Group; and T. Axelrod, Steward Observatory,
University of Arizona, report that a spectrum (range 560-1060 nm) of 2010ia
(cf. CBET 2463) was obtained on Sept. 20 UT by Axelrod, A. Saha (National
Optical Astronomical Observatory), and A. Vaz (Massachusetts Institute of
Technology) with the Kitt Peak National Observatory 4.0-m telescope using the
RCSpec spectrograph. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra,
using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007,
Ap.J. 666, 1024), shows that 2010ia is a type-Ia supernova about two months
past maximum light.

IAU Circular No.9165

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS

Further to IAUC 9110, the move of the undersigned and the
Central Bureau to the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences
(EPS) at Harvard University is essentially complete -- with the
transfer of CBAT computer activity (i.e., issuance of IAUCs and
CBETs, editorial work, etc.) from the Tamkin Foundation computers
at SAO to new Tamkin Foundation computers at EPS having taken place
on August 30. The generous gift of the Tamkin Foundation to
purchase new computers is gratefully acknowledged, together with
the continued support from Feb.-Aug. by the Minor Planet Center and
the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (for donating the primary
CBAT computer to EPS and for permitting the CBAT to operate on the
MPC and SAO computers until the new computers were set up at EPS).
The EPS faculty and staff are also thanked for their tremendous
support behind the Director and the CBAT.
With the transfer of large amounts of data from old computers
to new ones (and from one domain to another), there are inevitable
problems -- of some of which subscribers need to be aware. With
the first issuance of CBETs/IAUCs from EPS, we notice that there
are many e-mail "bounce-backs" because our new eps.harvard.edu
e-mail address is unrecognized (many messages returned and flagged
as "spam"); subscribers will need to have their computers accept
our incoming e-mail.
The CBAT webpages on the SAO computers have been copied over
to the new website (see URL in banner, above), although there are
many broken links that we are working hard to repair; while the
vast majority of our more-than-20000 webpages appear to be working
(including almost all of the posted Circulars and CBETs), it will
take some time to fix all the broken links. Readers with a need
to access a webpage with a broken link should e-mail us with the
request.

COMETS C/2009 R3 AND C/2009 R4 (SOHO)

Further to IAUC 9164, additional Kreutz sungrazers have been
found on SOHO website images. C/2009 R3 showed a hint of a tail in
C3 images (mag about 6), while in C2 images it was quite diffuse
with a very faint tail. C/2009 R4 was small in C3 images (mag
about 7-7.5), while it appeared in C2 images as very faint and very
diffuse.

COMET P/2010 L1 = 2002 Q16 (WISE)

The recognition at the Minor Planet Center of four
observations of comet P/2010 L1 (cf. IAUC 9151) by the Mt. Lemmon
Survey on Sept. 3.39 UT allowed a refinement of the orbital
elements by B. G. Marsden to T = 2010 Feb. 4.57 TT, P = 8.02 years
(cf. MPEC 2010-R21), with T = 2002 Jan. 19.55 TT at the comet's
previous pass. As a result, R. Matson, Irvine, CA, was able to
identify and measure observations of the comet on images obtained
by the NEAT Survey at Palomar during 2002 Aug. 27-Sept. 12,
corresponding to a correction Delta(T) = +0.16 day. The 2002
observations (initial observation below) have been designated
P/2002 Q16 and are given together with a newly-linked orbit on
MPEC 2010-R23.

COMET C/2010 R1 (LINEAR)

An apparently asteroidal object discovered by the LINEAR
project (discovery observation tabulated below), and posted on the
'NEOCP' webpage, has been found to be "fuzzy" with a tail in p.a.
about 90 deg by W. H. Ryan and E. V. Ryan on R-band CCD images
taken on Sept. 6.22-6.26 UT with the Magdalena Ridge Observatory
2.4-m reflector.

Sept. 4.14639 18 32 27.40 - 1 58 01.0 20.5 LINEAR

The available astrometry, the following preliminary parabolic
orbital elements by B. G. Marsden, and an ephemeris appear on MPEC
2010-R58.

COMETS C/2009 R5 AND S/2009 S5 (SOHO)

Further to IAUC 9165, additional Kreutz sungrazers have been
found on SOHO website images -- both objects being slightly diffuse
with no tail.
