NOVA AQUILAE 2010

Koichi Nishiyama, Kurume, Japan; and Fujio Kabashima, Miyaki,
Japan, report their discovery of a possible nova (mag 12.4) on two
40-s unfiltered CCD frames (limiting magnitude 13.9) taken around
Sept. 11.485 UT using a 105-mm f/4 camera lens (+ SBIG STL6303E
camera). Five 5-s unfiltered CCD images taken on Sept. 11.505 with
Meade 200R 0.40-m f/9.8 reflector (+ SBIG STL1001E camera) yield
the following precise position for the new variable: R.A. =
18h47m38s.38, Decl. = -3o47'14".1 (equinox 2000.0). Nothing is
visible at this location on two past survey frames taken on Sept.
9.528 (limiting mag 13.9) and 10.466 (limiting mag 14.0) or on the
Digitized Sky Survey (1987 July 31; limiting red mag 18.3).
Hiroyuki Maehara, Kwasan Observatory, Kyoto University,
reports on follow-up multicolor photometry of this object; CCD
images obtained with a 0.25-m telescope at the Kwasan Observatory
around Sept. 11.59 UT yield position end figures 38s.38, 13".9
(UCAC2 catalogue for position reference stars) and the following
magnitudes: Sept. 11.588, I_c = 10.45; 11.589, R_c = 13.43;
11.590, V = 16.0. Maehara adds that there are no IRAS or AKARI
catalogued point sources within 1' of the object, though a 2MASS
point source (J = 14.8, H = 14.2, K = 12.6) exists about 1".6 east
of the object's position. Maehara also forwards a report by Akira
Arai and Mizuki Isogai (Kyoto Sangyo University) of a low-
resolution spectrum obtained on Sept. 11.597 with the 1.3-m Araki
telescope (+ LOSA/F2 spectrograph; R about 500). The spectrum
shows H_alpha and O I 777.4-nm emission lines; the FWHM of the
H_alpha emission is 1500 km/s. These features suggest that this
object is a classical nova.
M. Yamanaka, R. Itoh, and T. Komatsu, Hiroshima University,
report that they obtained a low-resolution optical spectrum (range
450-900 nm; R = 400) of the nova on Sept. 11.60 UT at the Higashi-
Hiroshima Observatory of Hiroshima University. The spectrum shows
a highly reddened continuum and no strong emission line below 600
nm. The H_alpha feature, whose emission line full-width-at-zero-
intensity (FWZI) is measured to be 3000 km/s, has a P-Cyg profile;
the H_alpha absorption component has FWZI = 1500 km/s. An H_beta
feature is not detected in the spectrum. O I 777.4-nm and O I
844.6-nm also exhibit P-Cyg line profiles, and their absorption
minima reach 1500 km/s. The Ca II near-infrared triplet lines
849.8-, 854.2-, and 866.2-nm exhibit strong emission. The
absorption of Ca II 866.2-nm has FWZI = 1500 km/s. The Paschen
line series is also confirmed. These characteristics suggest that
this nova is a "Fe II"-type nova.

low-dispersion spectrogram (range 575-696 nm, resolution 0.4 nm),
obtained with the NRCC 1.82-m Plaskett telescope on Sept. 14.17 UT,
shows a red continuum dominated by H_alpha emission (HWZI about
2000 km/s) with a P-Cyg profile and strong emission peaks of Na I
(589.6 nm), [O I] (630 nm), and Fe II (multiplet 74) lines at 614.9,
623.8, 624.7 and 645.6 nm.

COMET P/2010 R2 (LA SAGRA)

Jaime Nomen, Barcelona, Spain, writes that careful examination
of an object detected at the La Sagra Observatory in Spain on Sept.
14.9 UT (0.45-m f/2.8 reflector, discovery position tabulated below)
shows some diffuse structure -- an appearance confirmed on Sept.
16.0 as a north-south elongation with some coma extending about 8"
in p.a. 185 deg. Following a suggestion by B. G. Marsden that the
same object had already been recorded at La Sagra on Aug. 13.0,
Nomen also examined those images, but with no conclusive result
about the appearance. After posting of the object on the 'NEOCP'
webpage, P. Birtwhistle (Great Shefford, Berkshire, England, 0.40-m
f/6 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector) remarked that on Sept. 17.0 the
object had a strongly condensed coma of diameter 6" and a tail 6"
wide and 11" long in p.a. 190 deg. On Sept. 17.1, R. Holmes
(Westfield, Illinois, 0.61-m f/4.5 astrograph) obtained images
showing a 5" coma and a 15" tail in p.a. 165 deg (measured by S.
Foglia, Novara Veveri, Italy), and on Sept. 17.2, J. V. Scotti
(Spacewatch 1.8-m reflector) described the object as of stellar
appearance, with an obvious tail to the south. G. Sostero,
Povoletto, Italy, writes that twelve stacked 300-s unfiltered CCD
images that he took with E. Guido, L. Donato, and V. Gonano
remotely using a 0.15-m f/7.3 refractor at the Tzec Maun
Observatory (near Moorook, Australia) on Sept. 17.6 show a
condensed coma nearly 10" in diameter.

Further astrometry are given on MPEC 2010-S11 and 2010-S28, with
the following orbital elements taken from the latter. The object
appears to be another "main-belt comet", similar to 133P = (7968)

COMET C/2010 S1 (LINEAR)

An apparently asteroidal object discovered by the LINEAR
survey (discovery observation tabulated below), and posted on the
Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage, has been found to show
cometary appearance by other CCD astrometrists. D. Mayes (Table
Mountain Observatory, 0.6-m f/16 Cassegrain reflector) writes that
images taken on Sept. 23.4 UT show a bright coma with a small tail.
W. H. Ryan (Magdalena Ridge Observatory, 2.4-m reflector) reports
that R-band images obtained on Sept. 24.3 yield mag 17.5-17.7 and
show a point-spread function for the comet that is significantly
greater than that for field stars. Eighteen stacked 120-s images
taken remotely by E. Guido and G. Sostero with a 0.25-m f/3.4
located at the GRAS Observatory (near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A.) on Sept.
24.3 show that this object appears soft compared to nearby field
stars of similar brightness with a slight elongation in the east-
west direction.

except for C/2009 U7 (Meyer group). C/2009 T11, C/2009 T12, and
C/2009 T13 all peaked near mag about 7.5 (the latter two described
as being diffuse). C/2009 U7 (mag about 7.5-8) and C/2009 U9 (mag
about 7-7.5) were stellar in appearance. C/2009 U8 peaked at mag
about 8.5.

COMET 103P/HARTLEY

N. Dello Russo and R. J. Vervack, Jr., Applied Physics
Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University; and H. Kawakita and H.
Kobayashi, Kyoto Sangyo University, report the detection at
infrared wavelengths of the parent volatile molecules H_2O, CH_3OH,
C_2H_6, and HCN in comet 103P on Sept. 16.3-16.5 UT using NIRSPEC
at the W. M. Keck Observatory. C_2H_2 was tentatively detected,
and CH_4 was searched for but not detected. For an aperture of
0".42 x 1".74 centered on the nucleus, the authors obtained a water
rotational temperature of 57 +/- 7 K, based on twenty-one detected
H_2O emissions. Production rates or upper limits (x 10^25
molecules/s) for Sept. 16 are: H_2O, 410 +/- 40; CH_3OH, 4.3 +/-
0.4; C_2H_6, 2.0 +/- 0.2; CH_4, < 2.0 (3-sigma); HCN, 1.5 +/- 0.2;
C_2H_2, 0.7 +/- 0.1. Preliminary production-rate ratios are then
H_2O:CH_3OH:C_2H_6:CH_4:HCN:C_2H_2 = 100:1.0:0.5:(<0.5):0.4:0.2.
Compared to other comets, production-rate ratios in 103P on this
date are within the normal range for CH_3OH, C_2H_6, and C_2H_2
-- while CH_4 and HCN are slightly depleted and enhanced,
respectively.

COMETS C/2009 U10-U12 (SOHO)

Further to IAUC 9170, additional near-sun comets have been
found on SOHO website images -- presumed Kreutz sungrazers except
for C/2009 U10 (Marsden group), which was marginally diffuse (peak
mag about 7.5). K. Battams notes that C/2009 U11 was slightly
diffuse with a "slight" tail, and C/2009 U12 was very diffuse with
a "large" tail (mag about 5).
