(15700) 1987 QD

R. Durkee, Shed of Science Observatory, Minneapolis, MN; P. Pravec, K.
Hornoch, and P. Kusnirak, Ondrejov Observatory; D. Pray, Carbuncle Hill
Observatory, W. Brookfield, MA, U.S.A.; V. Chiorny and V. Shevchenko, Kharkiv
Observatory; J. Oey, Leura, N.S.W., Australia; N. Gaftonyuk and Yu. Krugly,
Simeiz Observatory; D. Higgins, Canberra, Australia; J. Vilagi and S. Gajdos,
Modra Observatory; M. Husarik and M. Pikler, Skalnate Pleso Observatory; and
J. G. Ries, McDonald Observatory, University of Texas, report that photometric
observations obtained during Sept. 6-Oct. 13 reveal that minor planet (15700)
is a binary-system candidate. A primary rotation period of 3.0586 +/- 0.0001
hr with a lightcurve amplitude of 0.07 mag was resolved. Superimposed to the
primary lightcurve were attenuations with depths 0.1-0.3 mag and durations up
to 3.5 hours that had shapes characteristic of mutual events in a binary
system. A conclusive solution for the orbit period was not obtained, however,
so this object remains a serious suspect for being binary, but confirmation
must come from future observations.

SUPERNOVA 2010jn IN NGC 2929

The Central Bureau has received reports of the independent discoveries of
an apparent supernova in NGC 2929 on unfiltered CCD images -- the first by T.
Boles (Coddenham, England, 0.35-m reflector), and the second by J. Newton and
T. Puckett (0.40-m reflector at Portal, AZ, U.S.A.). Boles reports the
position of 2010jn as R.A. = 9h37m30s.24, Decl. = +23o09'33".3, which is
approximately 5".9 east and 8".7 south of the center of NGC 2929; Puckett
provides position end figures 30s.20, 33".6 (offset 4".6 east and 8".5 south
of the center of NGC 2929). Available magnitudes, from unfiltered CCD images
unless noted otherwise: 1995 Nov. 30, [21.0 (Digitized Sky Survey, blue
plate; via Boles); 1998 Apr. 22, [20.5 (DSS, red plate; via Boles); 2009 Jan.
6, [19.5 (Boles); 2009 Oct. 4, [19.9 (Puckett); 2010 Oct. 21.160, 17.0 (Boles;
discovery); Nov. 5.47, 17.2 (Newton and Puckett; discovery); 6.48, 16.9
(Puckett). Boles subsequently noted that 2010jn was reported by Howell et
al. (see website URL http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=2934), where
they reported position end figures 30s.30, 33".6 and the following R-band
magnitudes: Oct. 8.5, [20.3; 11.5, 19.6 (marginal); 12.5, 19.2 (discovery);
13.5, 18.7. Howell et al. add that a spectrogram obtained on Oct. 13 with
the "Gemini North" telescope showed 2010jn to be a type-Ia supernova around
15 days before maximum light, noting that the blueshift of the Si II 635.5-nm
feature indicates velocities in excess of 20000 km/s ("among the highest
ever seen for non-detached features" in a type-Ia event).

SUPERNOVA 2010jm

P. Challis and H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
(CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, report that spectroscopic
observations (range 360-760 nm), obtained on Nov. 6 UT by M. Calkins with the
F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), show that 2010jm (cf. CBET
2537) is a type-Ia supernova. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova
spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry
2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that the best spectral match for 2010jm is
to the type-Ia supernova 1999aa at 1 day before peak brightness.

SUPERNOVA 2010jo IN UGC 595

M. Koishikawa, Sendai Astronomical Observatory, reports the discovery
of an apparent supernova (mag 17.5) on a 180-s R-band exposure (limiting mag
19.0) taken on Nov. 6.580 UT with a 1.3-m f/4.85 reflector. The new object,
which was found to be at mag 17.3 by Koishikawa on Nov. 6.608, is located at
R.A. = 0h57m35s.60 +/- 0s.03, Decl. = -1d23'33".0 +/- 0".5 (equinox 2000.0);
nothing was visible at this position on his image of UGC 595 taken the
previous night (Nov. 5.518; limiting mag 19.0). Koishikawa reports V = 17.4
on Nov. 10.562 for 2010jo. Koishikawa also reports that K. Itagaki obtained
unfiltered confirming CCD images of 2010jo on Nov. 6.608 with a 0.60-m f/5.7
reflector, yielding mag 17.3 and position end figures 35s.58, 33".4 (which
is offset 10" east and 6" south from the center of UGC 595). Itagaki's image
is posted at website URL http://k-itagaki.jp/images/psn-ugc595.jpg. After
posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, C. Jacques and
E. Pimentel (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) write that they obtained a 120-s
unfiltered CCD image (limiting mag 17.8) on Nov. 7.02 remotely with a 43-cm
f/6.8 reflector at the Gras Observatory in Nerpio, Spain; from this, they
measured mag 16.8 and position end figures 35s.66, 33".6 -- adding that
nothing is visible at this position on a Digitized Sky Survey image from
1990 Aug. 28 (limiting red mag 19.0).

G. H. Marion, P. Challis, and S. Meyer Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, report that a
spectrum (range 340-740 nm) of 2010jo was obtained on Nov. 10 UT by P. Berlind
with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST). Cross-correlation
with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code
(SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that the object is a
type-Ia supernova near maximum light. The velocity of the Si II 635.5-nm
feature, measured at the absorption minimum, is 14200 km/s.

SUPERNOVAE 2010jp, 2010jr, AND 2010js

P. Challis and R. Kirshner, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
(CfA); and N. Smith, University of Arizona, on behalf of the CfA Supernova
Group, report that spectroscopic observations (range 320-850 nm) of 2010jr
(cf. CBET 2545), obtained on Nov. 14.3 UT with the MMT (+ blue-channel
spectrograph), show a smooth and very blue continuum that resembles that
seen in spectra of SN 1993J from two weeks before maximum light. A spectrum
of 2010jp (cf. CBET 2544) shows the Balmer series lines of a type-IIn
supernova; broad red wings extend to +15000 km/s, with much sharper
absorptions on the blue side at approximately -3000 km/s, which resemble the
line profiles seen in spectra of SN 2006gy. A spectrum of 2010js (cf. CBET
2546) shows the symmetric Balmer lines with widths of approximately 4000
km/s (FWZI) seen in type-IIn supernovae; the redshift for this object in UGC
4294 is z = 0.039.

SUPERNOVAE 2010ju, 2010jv, AND 2010jw

R. Kirshner and P. Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
(CfA); and T. Matheson, National Optical Astronomical Observatory, on behalf
of the CfA Supernova Group, report on spectroscopic observations (range
320-850 nm) obtained on Nov. 16.3 UT with the MMT (+ blue-channel
spectrograph) of the three apparent supernovae announced on CBET 2549.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates
that 2010ju is a type-Ia supernova about one week before maximum light; the
velocity of the Si II minimum is blueshifted by about 16000 km/s in the
supernova's restframe. The spectrogram of 2010jv shows the spectrum of a
type-Ia supernova at maximum, with a blueshift of 11000 km/s at the Si II
line. The spectrogram of 2010jw has a spectrum that resembles the type-Ic
supernova 2004eu at five days past maximum light.

SUPERNOVA 2010jq

G. Folatelli, IPMU, University of Tokyo; J. Anderson, Universidad
de Chile; and G. Pignata, Universidad Andres Bello, on behalf of the
Millennium Center for Supernova Science, report on an optical spectrogram
(range 355-896 nm) of 2010jq (cf. CBET 2544) obtained on Nov. 17.29 UT with
the SOAR telescope (+ Goodman HTS). The spectrum shows 2010jq to be an
evolved type-Ia supernova, between two and three months after maximum light.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024)
provides good matches with spectra of SN 2003du at +72 and +84 days.

BRIAN G. MARSDEN (1937-2010)

It is with deep regret that we must announce the death today
of Brian G. Marsden after a lengthy illness. He will be remembered
as contributing much to celestial mechanics and the dynamics and
orbits of minor bodies of the solar system and as having an encyclopedic
knowledge of the history of astronomy. He was a dedicated servant to
the astronomical community for many decades, serving as Director of the
Central Bureau from 1968 to 2000 (and as Director Emeritus since then)
and as Director of the Minor Planet Center from 1978 to 2006 (and as
Director Emeritus since then). He also served extensively within
Commissions 6 and 20 of the IAU over the years, being past President of
both Commissions. And he was one of the most visible astronomers in
the world over the years in terms of his generous availability to the
news media on behalf of the astronomical community.

AX PERSEI

U. Munari and A. Siviero, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Padova
Astronomical Observatory; R. L. M. Corradi, Instituto de Astrofisica de
Canarias; and P. Valisa, G. Cherini, F. Castellani, and S. Dallaporta, "Asiago
Novae and Symbiotic Stars" (ANS) collaboration, report that the symbiotic star
AX Per is undergoing a brightening phase, the first after the short outburst
it experienced in the (northern-hemisphere) spring of 2009 (cf. CBET 1757).
The 2009 event was the first bright phase after the major outburst AX Per
experienced between 1988 and 1992 (cf. IAUCs 4544, 4621, 4922, 4994). The
monitoring carried out with several ANS-collaboration telescopes recorded AX
Per to be still in quiescence at B = 12.33 (B-V = +0.89, V-I_c = +2.79) on
2010 Nov. 15.93 UT. On Nov. 19.97, it had brightened to B = 11.73 (B-V =
+0.80, V-I_c = +2.53), and by Nov. 22.69 it has reached B = 11.63 (B-V =
+0.78, V-I_c = +2.47). Interestingly, the start of this new active phase is
occurring about 615 days past that of 2009, which is not too dissimilar from
the orbital period of the star (682 days). Absolute optical
spectrophotometry of AX Per was obtained with the 0.60-m telescope of the
Schiaparelli Observatory in Varese. The spectrum from Nov. 22 is
characterized by a strong and high-ionization emission-line spectrum,
superimposed on the M-giant absorption spectrum, which is veiled shortward
of 500 nm by the blue continuum from circumstellar nebular material. On
this spectrum, the integrated flux of H_beta emission is 1.2 x 10**(-11)
erg cm**(-2) s**(-1), and the flux ratios (H_beta):(H_alpha):(He II
468.6-nm):(He I 587.6-nm):([O III] 500.7-nm):([Fe VII] 608.7-nm):(O I
844.6-nm) are 1.00:5.18:0.47:0.22:0.19:0.0067:0.069; for comparison, on
August 7, during quiescence, they obtained exactly the same flux for H_beta
emission, but different line ratios 1.00:6.01:0.24:0.24:0.05:0.068:0.16. So
the onset of the current active phase has not changed the flux of Balmer and
He I lines, but increased He II by a factor of two and [O III] by three,
and reduced O I 844.6 by a factor of two and [Fe VII] by ten. It is worth
noting that AX Per underwent a short-duration flare about one year before
the onset of the major 1988-1992 outburst. It is tempting to speculate by
similarity that the 2009 short outburst could be a similar precursor, and
that the present rise in brightness by AX Per could be the onset of a major
outburst event similar to that in 1988-1992.

SUPERNOVA 2010kd

J. Vinko, University of Szeged; W. Zheng and A. Romadan, University of
Michigan; R. Quimby, California Institute of Technology; N. Whallon, S. B.
Pandey, Y. Fang, and C. Akerlof, University of Michigan; P. Pasque and M.
Verkinderen, Cousino High School; and J. C. Wheeler and E. Chatzopoulos,
University of Texas, on behalf of the ROTSE collaboration, report the discovery
of a new supernova (mag about 17.5) in unfiltered images taken on Nov. 14.49 UT
with the 0.45-m ROTSE-IIIb telescope at McDonald Observatory. The new object
-- which was observed again on Nov. 16.49 at mag about 17.4, on Nov. 18.48 at
mag about 17.4, and on Nov. 22.47 at mag about 17.5 -- is located at R.A. =
12h08m01s.11, Decl. = +49o13'31".1 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty about 1"),
which is 2".1 east and 1".8 south of the center of the presumed host galaxy
(SDSS J120800.89+491332.8). Note that there is a fainter, uncatalogued
extended source about 2" southeast of the host galaxy that is also a possible
candidate to be the host galaxy of the new supernova. A finding chart for the
new object can be found at the following website URL:
http://www.rotse.net/rsvp/j120801.1+491 ... 491331.jpg. A spectrum,
obtained on Nov. 22.51 UT with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario
Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by J. Caldwell, shows broad, weak P-Cyg features
superimposed on a blue continuum, consistent with an early type-II supernova.
If the strongest broad feature is due to H-alpha, then the redshift is z about
0.1, implying a peak absolute magnitude brighter than -20.5 (neglecting
interstellar extinction). According to SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J.
666, 1024), the spectrum is similar to that of SN 1999gi at 5 days before
maximum light at a redshift consistent with the above estimate, but no
template matches all the observed features well. These suggest that the
supernova may be a peculiar, super-luminous event.

SUPERNOVA 2010ke

W. Zheng, University of Michigan; J. Vinko, University of Szeged; R.
Quimby, California Institute of Technology; A. Romadan, N. Whallon, S. B.
Pandey, F. Yuan, and C. Akerlof, University of Michigan; P. Pasque and M.
Verkinderen, Cousino High School; and J. C. Wheeler And E. Chatzopoulos,
University of Texas, on behalf of the ROTSE collaboration, report the
discovery of a new supernova (mag about 18.1) in unfiltered images taken on
Nov. 14.34 UT with the 0.45-m ROTSE-IIIb telescope at McDonald Observatory.
The new object -- which was observed again on Nov. 23.11 at mag about 18.0
and on Nov. 24.06 at mag about 18.2 -- is located at R.A. = 0h57m24s.62,
Decl. = -0o57'51".4 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty about 1"), which is 0".2
east and 1".9 south of the center of the presumed host galaxy (SDSS
J005724.60-005749.5). A finding chart for the object can be found at
website URL http://www.rotse.net/rsvp/j005724.6-005 ... 005751.jpg.
A spectrum, obtained on Nov. 25.10 UT with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope
(+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by S. Odewahn, shows 2010ke to be a
type-Ia supernova at more than a week after maximum light. The spectrum
contains a strong Si II feature and several other broad lines of S II and Fe
II, characteristics of type-Ia supernovae. The best-matching template
spectrum in SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ. 666, 1024) is to the spectrum
of SN 1995E at 10 days after maximum. The redshift, estimated from broad
supernova features, is z = 0.042, consistent with the photo-z estimate of
the presumed host galaxy in the SDSS database. The expansion velocity at
the photosphere, derived from the absorption minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm
feature, is about 10000 km/s.
