report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova on unfiltered KAIT images:

G. H. Marion, P. Challis, and R. Kirshner, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, report that a spectrum
(range 340-740 nm) of 2010kg was obtained on Dec. 1 UT by M. Calkins with the
F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST). Cross-correlation with a
library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID;
Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that 2010kg is a type-Ia
supernova more than one week before maximum brightness. The velocity of the
Si II 635.5-nm feature, measured at the absorption minimum, is about 21200 km/s.

SUPERNOVA 2010kf

G. H. Marion, P. Challis, and S. Meyer Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, report that a
spectrum (range 340-740 nm) of 2010kf (cf. CBET 2558) was obtained on Nov. 30
UT by M. Calkins with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST).
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows
that 2010kf is a type-Ia supernova about one week past maximum brightness.
The velocity of the Si II 635.5-nm feature, measured at the absorption
minimum, is 9700 km/s.

SUPERNOVA 2010ki

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Koichi Itagaki
(Teppo-cho, Yamagata) of an apparent supernova (mag 16.9) on unfiltered CCD
frames taken on Dec. 2.473 UT using a 0.60-m f/5.7 reflector (limiting
magnitude 19.0). The new object is located at R.A. = 23h16m09s.58 +/- 0s.02,
Decl. = -2d14'05".3 +/- 0".3 (equinox 2000.0), which is 5".4 west and 5".2
south of the center of the presumed host galaxy, 2MASX J23160991-0214004.
Nothing is visible at this position on the Digitized Sky Survey (no
limiting-magnitude information provided). Additional unfiltered CCD
magnitudes for 2010ki: 2006 Aug. 3.63, [19.5 (Itagaki); 2010 Nov. 21.447,
17.3 (Itagaki; pre-discovery; 0.50-m f/6 reflector); Dec. 3.062, 16.3 (T.
Yusa, Osaki, Japan, remotely using a 0.25-m f/3.4 hyperbolic astrograph +
SBIG ST-10XME camera at the RAS Observatory near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A.; position

SUPERNOVAE 2010kc AND 2010kg

J. M. Silverman, S. B. Cenko, M. T. Kandrashoff, and A. V. Filippenko,
University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a CCD spectrum
(range 340-1000 nm), obtained on Nov. 30 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+
Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2010kc (CBET 2552) is a type-Ib
supernova. SN 2010kg (CBET 2561) is a very young type-Ia supernova. After
removal of the host-galaxy recession velocity of 4770 km/s (measured from
their own spectrum of the host, NGC 1633), they find the absorption minimum
of the Si II 635.5-nm line to be blueshifted by about 21300 km/s. Cross-
correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova
IDentification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024)
indicates that 2010kg is a normal type-Ia supernova (consistent with the
findings of Marion et al., CBET 2561) and might be as young as 10-14 days
before maximum brightness. Extensive follow-up observations are encouraged.

G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on
behalf of the CfA Supernova Group; and D. Griep, NASA Infrared Telescope
Facility (IRTF), report that a near-infrared spectrum (range 700-2400 nm) of
SN 2010kg (cf. CBET 2561) was obtained on Dec 3.4 UT with the SpeX instrument
on the IRTF 3.0-m telescope. The spectrum exhibits unusually high velocities
with lines from O I, Mg II, and Si II found between 18000 and 20000 km/s.
The Ca II infrared triplet (857.9 mn) is exceptional strong, and the
absorption-line profile has a square bottom with the blue side near 32000
km/s and the red side near 26000 km/s. The blue wings of the Ca II feature
extend to at least 40000 km/s, where they blend with O I and Si II. Possible
identifications are made for Si III and Fe III. CI is not observed.

Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) magnitudes for 2010kj: Oct. 11.36 UT, [20.1; 28.37,
19.1; Nov. 17.16, 18.0; 28.31, 18.9. Nothing was visible at the position of
2010kk on a CSS image from 2009 Nov. 22.36 (limiting mag 21.2). Spectroscopy
was obtained of both objects with the SAO's BTA 6-m reflector (+ SCORPIO;
range 380-790 nm) on Nov. 15 UT. Cross-correlation of the spectra with a
library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID;
Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that both are normal type-
Ia supernovae. SN 2010kj is similar to SN 1995D at around four days after
maximum with redshift 0.064 +/- 0.002 (according to broad lines in the
spectrum), and 2010kk is similar to SN 1994ae around six days after maximum
at redshift 0.213 +/- 0.005.

not seen in MLS co-added images reaching mag 22.0; its presumed host galaxy

POSSIBLE SUPERNOVA IN NGC 1954

Simone Leonini, Siena, Italy, reports the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag about 16.8) on an unfiltered CCD image (limiting mag about 19.5)
taken on Dec. 5.011 UT during the Montarrenti Observatory Supernovae Search
program using a 0.53-m f/7.8 Ritchey-Chretien telescope (+ Apogee Alta U47 CCD
camera). A confirming image (limiting mag about 19.5) showing the variable
at mag about 15.7 (with position end figures 49s.8, 50".0) was obtained on Dec.
6.701 UT by J. Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia, using a robotic 0.51-m RCOS scope
(+ SBIG STL11K CCD camera) near Mayhill, New Mexico. The new object is located
at R.A. = 5h32m49s.44, Decl. = -14d05'45".9 (equinox 2000.0), which is 15" east
and 118" south of the nucleus of the galaxy NGC 1954. No stellar source is
visible at this position in Leonini's past images, including two on 2009 Dec.
25.969 (limiting mag about 19.0), and the new object does not appear on Palomar
Sky Survey plates (1986 Dec. 10, infrared; 1981 Dec. 3, red and blue plates;
limiting mag 19.8). The discovery image of the apparent supernova is posted at

POSSIBLE SUPERNOVA IN NGC 1954

K. Itagaki, Yamagata, Japan, reports (via H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University)
that this possible supernova (cf. CBET 2569) was fainter than mag 19.0 in his
image taken on Dec. 1.608 UT, which indicates that this is a recent outburst.

APPARENT NOVA IN M31: M31N 2010-10d

Three independent discoveries of a nova in M31, here designated
M31N 2010-10d, were reported, with details given below.

Koichi Nishiyama, Kurume, Japan; and Fujio Kabashima, Miyaki, Japan,
report the discovery of a possible nova (mag 17.8) in M31 on ten 40-s
unfiltered CCD frames (limiting magnitude 19.5) taken around Oct. 29.478 UT
using a Meade 200R 0.40-m f/9.8 reflector (+ SBIG STL1001E camera). The new
object is located at R.A. = 0h42m36s.91, Decl. = +41d19'29".9 (equinox 2000.0),
which is 84" west and 201" north of the center of the galaxy M31. Nothing is
visible at this position on their past frames taken on Oct. 26.550 and 27.642
(limiting magnitude 19.3) or on the Digitized Sky Survey from 1986 Nov. 27
(limiting red mag 18.7). The nearest star in Massey's M31 catalogue
(http://www.lowell.edu/users/massey/lgsurvey.html) is 1"-2" away (position
end figures 37s.01, 30."8, magnitudes V = 22.6, B = 23.4, R = 22.5).

Guoyou Sun, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China; and Xing Gao, Urumqi, Xinjiang,
China, report the discovery of a possible nova (mag approximately 18.5) on
several 60-s survey images (limiting mag about 19.5) taken by Xing Gao in the
course of the Xingming Observatory Sky Survey around Oct. 29.587 UT using an
unfiltered CCD camera and a Celestron C14 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope at Mt.
Nanshan. The new object is approximately located at R.A. = 0h42m36s.97, Decl.
= +41d19'28".7 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 110" west and 200" north of
the center of NGC 224. Nothing is visible at this position on archival images
taken on Oct. 26.536 (limiting mag 19.0), 27.60231 (limiting mag 19.5), and
28.66069 (limiting mag 19.5).

Kamil Hornoch, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov, reports his discovery of
an apparent nova in M31 on a co-added 1260-s R-band CCD frame taken on Oct.
29.729 UT with the 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov. The new object is well
visible on the co-added frame as well as on single images used for the co-
added frame, but is not present on numerous archive images taken at Lelekovice
and Ondrejov. The object is visible also on a pre-discovery Ondrejov R-band
CCD frame taken on Oct. 28.719. M31N 2010-10d is located at R.A. =
0h42m36s.91, Decl. = +41o19'29".6 (equinox 2000.0), which is 84" west and 201"
north of the center of M31. Available R-band magnitudes for M31N 2010-10d,
measured by Hornoch: 2010 Oct. 22.934 UT, [20.6 (Hornoch and P. Hornochova,
0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov); 28.719, 19.8 +/- 0.25 (Hornoch and M. Wolf,
0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov); 29.729, 17.85 +/- 0.1 (Hornoch, 0.65-m
telescope at Ondrejov); 30.725, 17.2 +/- 0.1 (Hornoch and Hornochova); 30.979,
17.4 +/- 0.1 (Hornoch and Hornochova); 31.761, 17.0 +/- 0.1 (Hornoch and

University of Texas, on behalf of the ROTSE collaboration, report the discovery
of a new supernova (mag about 18.5) in unfiltered images taken on Dec. 2.20 UT
with the 0.45-m ROTSE-IIIb telescope at McDonald Observatory. The new object,
which was observed again on Dec. 3.19 at mag about 18.6, is located at R.A. =
11h50m17s.04, Decl. = +43o57'47".0 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty about 1"),
which is 0".2 east and 1".6 north of the center of the presumed host galaxy
(SDSS J115017.02+435745.4). A spectrum, obtained on Dec. 5.45 with the 9.2-m
Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by M. Shetrone,
shows that 2010kn is a type-Ia supernova, a few days before maximum light.
The spectrum contains the Si II 635.5-nm line and several other characteristic
type-Ia-supernova features. According to SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ.
666, 1024), the spectrum most resembles those of SN 2002er (at 9.4 days before
maximum) and SN 2000E (at 2.5 days before maximum). The median redshift
estimate is z = 0.073, in good agreement with the spectroscopic redshift of
the galaxy designated SDSS J115017.02+435745.4 (z = 0.071) via the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey. Adopting this redshift, the velocity (from the absorption
minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm feature) is 11000 km/s.

APPARENT NOVA IN M31: M31N 2010-10e

Kamil Hornoch, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov, and P. Hornochova report
their discovery of apparent nova in M31 on a co-added 1800-s R-band CCD frame
taken on Oct. 31.727 UT with the 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov. The new
object, designated M31N 2010-10e, is well visible on the co-added frame as
well as on single images used for the co-added frame, but it is not present
on numerous archive images taken at Lelekovice and Ondrejov. The object is
visible also on a pre-discovery Ondrejov R-band CCD frame taken on Oct. 30.703
UT. M31N 2010-10e is located at R.A. = 0h42m57s.74, Decl. = +41o08'12".1
(equinox 2000.0), which is 151" east and 476" south of the center of M31.

APPARENT NOVA IN M31: M31N 2010-12a

W. Zheng, A. Romadan, and N. Whallon, University of Michigan; J. Vinko,
University of Szeged; R. Quimby, California Institute of Technology; S. B.
Pandey, F. Yuan, and C. Akerlof, University of Michigan; P. Pasque and M.
Verkinderen, Cousino High School; and J. C. Wheeler and E. Chatzopoulos,
University of Texas, on behalf of the ROTSE collaboration, report the
discovery of an optical transient in M31, located at R.A. = 0h40m24s.39, Decl.
= +41o04'03".9 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty < 1"), which is 26'.3 west and
12'.1 south from the core of M31, that was detected in unfiltered CCD images
taken by the ROTSE-IIIb telescope at McDonald Observatory on Dec. 1.15 UT,
both in co-added image and in four individual images at mag about 16.7. The
object, designated 2010-12a, was not detected to a limiting magnitude of
about 18.5 before and on Nov. 28. The quoted ROTSE magnitudes are calibrated
relative to the USNO-B1.0 catalogue. A finding chart can be found at website

Jiangao Ruan, Fangchenggang, Guangxi, China; and Xing Gao, Urumqi, Xinjiang,
China, report their independent discovery of M31N 2010-12a at mag approximately
16.3 on two unfiltered 60-s survey CCD images (limiting mag about 19.5) taken
by Xing Gao in the course of the Xingming Observatory Sky Survey around Dec.
1.5205 UT using a Celestron C14 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope at Mt. Nanshan;
they provide position end figures 24s.37 +/- 0s.01, 03".5 +/- 0".2. Additional
magnitudes for M31N 2010-12a from Ruan and Gao: 1993 Oct. 21, [20.8 (Palomar
Sky Survey, red N plate); 2010 Nov. 28, [19.5; 29, [19.5; Dec. 1.543, 16.1;
4.554, 16.0; 5.517, 16.0; 6.532, 16.2; 17.524, 16.3. Ruan and Gao have

SUPERNOVA 2010ko IN NGC 1954

P. Challis, G. H. Marion, and R. Kirshner, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, report that a
spectrum (range 340-740 nm) of the supernova candidate in NGC 1954 (cf. CBETs
2569, 2570) was obtained on Dec. 7 UT by M. Calkins with the F. L. Whipple
Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST). Cross-correlation with a library of
supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and
Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows the best fit for 2010ko is with the type-Ia
supernova 1992A at a phase of five days before maximum brightness. The
velocity of the Si II 635.5-nm feature, measured at the absorption minimum, is
11900 km/s.

J. Parrent, D. A. Howell, P. E. Nugent, M. Sullivan, and D. Murray, on
behalf the "Palomar Transient Factory", confirm the discovery of this supernova
in NGC 1954. A CCD spectrum (range 350-950 nm) was taken with the Gemini South
telescope on Dec. 7 UT. Matches to other spectra using "Superfit" (Howell et
al. 2005, Ap.J. 634, 1190) indicate that 2010ko is a type-Ia supernova close to
or before maximum light at an approximate redshift of z = 0.01. Assuming this
redshift, the absorption minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm line displays a blue-
shifted velocity of 11400 km/s. Further inspection of the spectrum reveals a
stronger-than-normal Si II 580-nm absorption line, similar to those observed in
subluminous type-Ia supernovae. If 2010ko is subluminous, an apparent absence
of Ti II lines near 420 nm suggests that the supernova is only slightly sub-
luminous. A Palomar image taken on Dec. 2.27 shows 2010ko at magnitude R =
17.5 +/- 0.3 (with respect to USNO-B1-catalogue data).

APPARENT NOVA IN M81: M81N 2010-12a

Kamil Hornoch, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov; and Peter Garnavich and
James Pagnini, University of Notre Dame, report their discovery of an apparent
nova in the galaxy M81 on a co-added 2970-s unfiltered CCD frame taken by
Hornoch on Dec. 5.147 UT with the 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov and on a
co-added 580-s R-band CCD frame taken by Garnavich and Pagnini with the Vatt4k
imager on the 1.83-m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope on Dec. 5.515 UT.
The new object, designated M81N 2010-12a, is visible on single 200-s and 60-s
images used for the co-added 1.83-m R-band image, as well as on S-Vilnius-band
CCD frames taken by Garnavich and Pagnini on Dec. 5.534 with the same
instrumentation. M81N 2010-12a is about 0.6 mag brighter in S-Vilnius-filtered
images than are other field stars with the same R-band magnitude due to its
H_alpha emission, which also suggest that it is nova. M81N 2010-12a is not
present on numerous archive images from the 2.54-m Isaac Newton Telescope, the
4.2-m William Herschel Telescope, the 4-m Mayall telescope, and the 8.4-m Large
Binocular Telescope (Prieto et al., 2008, Ap.J. 673, 59) down to limiting
magnitudes as faint as Sloan r' = 23.0, R = 23.1, V = 23.5, and H-alpha = 22.1.
M81N 2010-12a is located at R.A. = 9h55m48s.63, Decl. = +69o03'11".6
(equinox 2000.0), which is 82".9 east and 43".5 south of the center of M81.
Available magnitudes measured by Hornoch: 2010 June 11.164 UT, [22.9 (P.
Garnavich, C. Littlefield, N. Paul, and S. Bouzid, 1.83-m Vatican Advanced
Technology Telescope + R filter); Nov. 14.192, [22.3 (Hornoch, 0.65-m telescope
at Ondrejov; unfiltered, using R-band magnitudes from comparison stars); Dec.
5.147, 20.9 +/- 0.3 (Hornoch); 5.515, R = 21.3 +/- 0.15 (Garnavich and Pagnini,
1.83-m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope).

SUPERNOVA 2010kp

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japans, reports the discovery by Koichi Itagaki
(Teppo-cho, Yamagata) of an apparent supernova (mag 17.9) on unfiltered CCD
frames (limiting magnitude 19.5) taken on Dec. 8.505 UT using a 0.60-m
f/5.7 reflector. The new object, which was confirmed at mag 18.0 by Itagaki
on Dec. 9.373, is located at R.A. = 4h03m38s.85 +/- 0s.01, Decl. = +70o45'15".7
(equinox 2000.0), which is 8" west and 4" north of the center of 2MASX
J04034059+7045116, and near NGC 1485. Nothing is visible at this location on
his past frames, including one taken on 2009 Oct. 14.58 (limiting mag 20.0), or
on the Digitized Sky Survey (limiting mag 21.0; no bandpass provided).

writes that he confirmed 2010kp at mag 17.3 on three 120-s unfiltered CCD
frames (limiting magnitude 19.5) taken remotely using a 0.25-m f/3.4 hyperbolic
astrograph (+ SBIG ST-10XME camera) at the RAS Observatory near Mayhill, NM,
U.S.A., on Dec. 9.353; Yusa measured position end figures 38s.82, 15".7 for
the new object.

supernova in public images from the Catalina Sky Survey (CSS).

After posting on the CBAT's unconfirmed-objects webpage, Markku Nissinen and
Veli-Pekka Hentunen (Varkaus, Finland) report that their exposures (limiting
mag R = 18.9; 3-sigma) taken on Dec. 9 remotely with a 51-cm f/6.8 GRAS011
Global-Rent-a-Scope (+ FLI ProLine PL-11002M camera) near Mayhill, NM, USA,
yield position end figures 11s.05, 39".9 for 2010kq (which is 1".5 east and
6".1 south of the center of the galaxy UGC 1769); they note that nothing is
visible at this position on a red Palomar Sky Survey F plate. Further CCD
magnitude estimates for 2010kq (unfiltered unless otherwise noted): Nov.
15.20 UT, [19.5 (CSS); Dec. 9.088, R = 16.4 +/- 0.1 (Nissinen and Hentunen);
9.14, 16.4 (Howerton; remotely using the LB-1 0.6m telescope at Rodeo, NM,
U.S.A.). Drake notes that the presumed host galaxy, UGC 1769, has redshift
z = 0.027.
