NOVA OPHIUCHI 2010

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Hideo Nishimura
(Miyawaki, Kakegawa, Shizuoka-ken, Japan) of a possible nova (mag 8.4) on
two 13-s frames (limiting magnitude 11.0, measured by Nakano) taken on Jan.
15.857 UT with a Canon EOS 5D Digital Camera (+ Minolta 120-mm f/3.5 lens),
providing the position as R.A. = 17h39m41s, Decl. = -21d39'47" (equinox
2000.0; measured by Nishimura). Nothing appears at this position on a frame
from Jan. 13.86 (limiting mag about 9.5, assessed by Nishimura) or on frames
taken monthly during 2009 Jan. 29-Nov. 3 (limiting mag 11.0). However,
Nishimura did identify a faint image on a frame taken on Jan. 14.865,
from which Nakano derives mag 10.1 (and limiting mag 10.6) and position end
figures 41s.3, 54" for the new object; Nakano also measures mag 8.8 and
position end figures 40s.90, 50".5 from Nishimura's discovery image on
Jan. 15. Additional position end figures and magnitudes forwarded by Nakano
for the presumed nova from unfiltered CCD frames taken by other observers:
Jan. 16.856, 40s.94, 47".9, mag 8.4 (K. Itagaki, Takanezawa station,
Tochigi-ken, Japan, 0.30-m f/7.8 reflector); Jan. 16.860, 40s.97, 47".4, mag
8.2 (K. Kadota, Ageo, Saitama-ken, Japan, 0.25-m f/5 reflector). Kadota
adds that nothing is visible at this position on a red Digitized Sky Survey
image from 1997 (limiting mag estimated to be 20 by Nakano). Itagaki has

SUPERNOVA 2009nk IN NGC 5491

I. K. W. Kleiser, J. M. Silverman, S. B. Cenko, and A. V. Filippenko,
University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a CCD spectrum
(range 350-1020 nm), obtained on Jan. 16 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+
Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2009nk (CBET 2102) is a type-Ia
supernova. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the
"SuperNova IDentification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666,
1024) indicates that 2009nk is about one week past maximum brightness. After
removal of the host-galaxy recession velocity of about 6000 km/s, determined
from narrow emission features, the absorption minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm
line is found to be blueshifted by about 10400 km/s.

Further to CBET 2119, J. Kong, S. B. Cenko, W. Li, and A. V. Filippenko,
University of California, report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova
on unfiltered KAIT images:

2010H Jan. 16.43 8 06 24.36 + 1 02 09.1 15.3 3".9 E, 0".7 S

Nothing is visible at this position in a KAIT image taken on 2009 Dec. 25.39
UT, to limiting mag 18.5. J. Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia, confirmed the
presence of 2010H at mag 15.2 in a co-added image from four 1200-s unfiltered
images taken remotely with a 0.5-m telescope located near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A.,
on Jan. 17.15.

Laboratory, University of Arizona; and E. Christensen, Gemini Observatory,
report the CRTS discovery of nine confirmed supernovae and two apparent
supernovae in unfiltered images from the Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) 0.7-m
telescope and the 1.5-m Mt. Lemmon Survey (MLS) telescope, with the
discovery observations tabulated below. The spectroscopic types tabulated
below were from observations made with the Boller and Chivens CCD
Spectrograph on the 2.4-m Hiltner telescope at MDM Observatory between Jan.
8 and 15 UT; cross-correlation was made with a library of supernovae
spectra using the SuperNova IDentification code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry
2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), and the spectra reveal the following redshifts:
2009ns z = 0.05; 2009nu, 0.04; 2009nv, 0.09; 2009nw, 0.14; 2010I, 0.06;

hydrogen Balmer lines have well-developed P-Cyg profiles, although the emission
component of H-alpha greatly dominates over the absorption component.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the SNID code
indicates that 2010K is most similar to the type-IIP supernova 2004et at about
10 days past maximum brightness. After removal of the host-galaxy recession
velocity of about 6000 km/s, determined from narrow emission features, the
absorption minimum of the H-alpha line is found to be blueshifted by about
10200 km/s.

NOVAE IN M81

Kamil Hornoch, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov; Jose Prieto, Carnegie
Observatories; and Rubab Khan and Ondrej Pejcha, Department of Astronomy,
Ohio State University, report their discovery of a nova in M81 on a co-added
600-s Sloan r' CCD frame taken by Prieto and Khan with RETROCAM on the 2.4-m
Hiltner telescope at MDM observatory on Jan. 10.364 UT. The new object is
visible on single 60-s images used for the co-added image, and on the co-added
1200-s image taken by Prieto and Khan with the same instrumentation on Jan.
11.368. Available Sloan r' magnitudes for the object, designated M81N
2010-01a, as measured by Hornoch: Jan. 8.333, [23.4; 10.364, 21.2 +/- 0.15;
11.368, 20.2 +/- 0.1; 14.394, 20.2 +/- 0.1; 15.471, 20.6 +/- 0.1. M81N
2010-01a is located at R.A. = 9h55m26s.22, Decl. = +69o06'18".9 (equinox
2000.0), which is 37".2 west and 143".8 north of the center of M81. Nothing
is present at this position on numerous archive images from the 2.54-m Isaac
Newton Telescope, the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope, the 4-m Mayall
telescope, and the 8.2-m Subaru telescope, down to limiting magnitudes as
faint as Sloan r' = 23.3, R = 23.4, and V = 23.8. Low-resolution optical
spectroscopy (range 400-750 nm, resolution 1.4 nm) was obtained using the
Boller & Chivens CCD Spectrograph on the 2.4-m Hiltner telescope at MDM
Observatory; a low-S/N spectrogram of M81N 2010-01a, taken by Prieto and
Khan under poor seeing conditions on Jan. 15.37, exhibits a blue continuum
with strong H-alpha in emission and very faint H-beta. The FWHM of H-alpha
is about 1700 km/s. This confirms, that the object is classical nova in M81.
Hornoch also measured additional Sloan r' magnitudes for recent novae
in the same galaxy (cf. CBETs 2051, 2063): M81N 2009-11a, 2010 Jan. 11.368
UT, [22.7. M81N 2009-11b, Jan. 8.333, 23.0 +/- 0.3; 11.368, 23.4 +/- 0.2.
M81N 2009-11c, Jan. 8.333, [23.0; 11.368, [23.1.

S. Benetti and E. Giro, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio
Astronomico di Padova, report that a spectrogram of 2010H (cf. CBET 2130),
obtained on Jan. 19.91 UT with the Asiago 1.82-m telescope (+ AFOSC; range
375-815 nm; resolution 2.5 nm), shows a spectrum typical of a type-Ia
supernova around maximum light. Assuming a host-galaxy recession velocity of
4607 km/s (Ogando et al. 2008, A.J. 135, 2424; via NED) for the parent galaxy,
comparison of the observed spectrum with a library of supernova spectra via
the "GELATO" code (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383, available at
website URL https://gelato.tng.iac.es/login.cgi) shows strong resemblance to
that of SN 2003du (Stanishev et al. 2007, A.Ap. 469, 645), a few days after
maximum light.

COMET P/2010 A2 (LINEAR)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Editor's note: this CBET contains additional information that
could not be published on IAUC 9109 because of printing/space constraints,
due to the great interest in this unusual object.]
Further to IAUC 9105, the following improved orbital elements (from
MPEC 2010-A78) for this comet are like those of a minor planet in the inner
part of the main belt:

T = 2009 Nov. 17.248 TT Peri. = 125.600
e = 0.13178 Node = 321.073 2000.0
q = 1.97580 AU Incl. = 5.099
a = 2.27570 AU n = 0.287099 P = 3.43 years

J. V. Scotti, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, reports on additional CCD
images of this comet taken by R. S. McMillan with the Spacewatch 1.8-m f/2.7
reflector on Jan. 8.2 and 12.4 UT, in which there was no distinct nuclear
condensation, though the presumed location of the nucleus would be the
eastern end of the elongated coma structure. On Jan. 8, the coma size was
about 8" x 11", with a sharper edge on the northern boundary, and a long,
narrow tail extended to at least 4'.6 in p.a. 279 deg; a faint spike extended
0'.34 in p.a. 137 deg. Nine co-added images (effective integration time 1390
s) from Jan. 12 show the width of the elongated coma to be about 11", and its
length to be about 13" in p.a. 297 deg, with a tail at least 4'.8 long in
p.a. 278 deg.
J. Licandro, Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC); G. P. Tozzi,
Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Arcetri; and T. Liimets, Nordic Optical
Telescope (NOT) and Tartu Observatory, report that 5-min R- and V-band
exposures obtained on Jan. 14.945-14.985 UT in very good (0".6) seeing with
the 2.5-m NOT (+ ALFOSC) shows the presence of an asteroidal object 2" east
of (and moving at the same rate as) the uncondensed "dust swarm" of P/2010
A2, which itself is 4' long and about 5" wide (177000 and 3700 km,
respectively, at the comet's distance) in p.a. 277 deg. Licandro adds that
these observations suggest a connection between the asteroidal object and
the dust swarm; a short-lived event, such as a collision, may have produced
the observed dust ejecta. Together with A. Cabrera-Lavers and G. Gomez, IAC
and Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) Project Office, Licandro further writes
that a series of fifty-four 30-s images obtained on Jan. 16.070-16.133 with
the 10.4-m GTC (+ OSIRIS + g, r, and i Sloan filters) again shows the
asteroidal object about 2" to the east of the comet.
R. Haver and A. Caradossi, Frasso Sabino, Italy, report that the comet
appears as a tail 1'.8 long in p.a. 278 deg on Jan. 15.95 UT on CCD images
taken with a 0.37-m f/6.8 Cassegrain telescope; on Jan. 16.90, the tail
appeared longer (2'.7 in p.a. 276 deg). No condensation was visible with
this small an instrument. L. Buzzi, Varese, Italy, notes a 240" tail in
p.a. 279 deg on stacked CCD images (totally 35 min of exposure; limiting
mag 21.5) taken on Jan. 16.04-16.11 with a 0.60-m f/4.6 reflector.

APPARENT NOVA IN M31: M31N 2010-01b

Koichi Nishiyama, Kurume, Fukuoka-ken, Japan; and Fujio Kabashima,
Miyaki-cho, Saga-ken, Japan, report the discovery of an apparent nova (mag
18.1) in M31 on seven 40-s unfiltered CCD frames (limiting mag 19.5) taken
around Jan. 17.438 UT using a Meade 200R 0.40-m f/9.8 reflector (+ SBIG
STL1001E camera). M31N 2010-01b is located at R.A. = 0h43m00s.07 +/- 0s.01,
Decl. = +41d25'16".9 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is 178" east and 548"
north of the center of the galaxy. Additional magnitudes for M31N 2010-01b:
Jan. 8.435, [19.0; 16.457, [19.1; 18.426, 17.1. Nothing is visible at this
position on the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) red and infrared plates. T. Yusa,
Osaki, Japan, reports that eighteen stacked 120-s unfiltered CCD frames
(limiting mag 20.0) taken on Jan. 17.540 using a 0.30-m f/8.2 Cassegrain
telescope yield mag 18.3 and position end figures 00s.13, 17".4 for M31N
2010-01b, adding that nothing is visible at this position on DSS images
from 1985 Dec. 17 and 1986 Nov. 28 (red). Yusa has posted an image marking

M31N 2010-01a

Further to CBET 2127, K. Hornoch, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov; J.
Prieto, Carnegie Observatories; and R. Khan and O. Pejcha, Department of
Astronomy, Ohio State University, report additional low-resolution optical
spectroscopy (range 400-750 nm, resolution 1.4 nm) and optical photometry of
M31N 2010-01a. Spectra were obtained using the Boller & Chivens CCD
Spectrograph on the 2.4-m Hiltner telescope at MDM Observatory; a spectrogram
of M31N 2010-01a, taken by Prieto and Khan on 2010 Jan. 15.09 UT (3.96 days
after its first optical detection made by V. Burwitz et al.) shows evolution
with respect to their previous observation --- namely, the P-Cyg profiles
disappeared and the spectrum is dominated by strong emission lines of the
Balmer series up to at least H-epsilon, and emission lines of iron. The
object is thus confirmed as an "Fe II"-class nova in its early decline
phase. The HWZI of H-alpha and H-beta is about 2500 km/s. Magnitude
measurements were obtained from images taken with RETROCAM on the 2.4-m
Hiltner telescope; additional Sloan magnitudes for M31N 2010-01a measured
by Hornoch from 2.4-m telescope images taken by Prieto and Khan: Jan.
14.082, g' = 16.71 +/- 0.09; 14.087, r' = 16.54 +/- 0.03; 15.096, g' =
16.99 +/- 0.10; 15.100, r' = 16.86 +/- 0.04.

SUPERNOVAE 2010E AND 2010F
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

R. J. Foley, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, reports that
inspection of CCD spectra (range 305-1030 nm), obtained on Jan. 20 UT with
the Magellan Clay 6.5-m telescope (+ MagE), shows that 2010E (cf. CBET 2121)
and 2010F (cf. CBET 2125) are both type-II supernovae. Cross-correlation
with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification"
code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2010E
and 2010F are most similar to SN 2004et at 23 days after maximum brightness
and SN 1999em at maximum brightness, respectively. Removing the host-galaxy
recession velocity of 6180 km/s (found from narrow lines), the minimum of the
H_alpha absorption feature is blueshifted by 6000 and 11400 km/s for 2010E
and 2010F, respectively.

E. C. Beshore and S. M. Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of
Arizona; and E. Christensen, Gemini Observatory, report the CRTS discovery
of an apparent supernova in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) images:

Nothing was visible at this position on a CSS image from 2009 July 30.15
(limiting mag 18.5).
I. K. W. Kleiser, J. M. Silverman, S. B. Cenko, and A. V. Filippenko,
University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of CCD spectra
(range 350-1020 nm), obtained on Jan. 16 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+
Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2010N is a type-Ia supernova that SNID
(Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates is about 2 to 3 weeks
past maximum. From narrow emission features, it is found that the recession
velocity of 2010N's host galaxy is about 6400 km/s.

NOVA OPHIUCHI 2010

Hiroyuki Maehara, Kwasan Observatory, Kyoto University, reports that
a low-resolution spectrum (range 400-800 nm) of this object (cf. CBET 2128)
was obtained on Jan. 22.890 UT with the 25-cm telescope at the Kwasan
Observatory. The spectrum shows H_alpha and Fe II emission lines and
suggests that this object is a classical nova just after maximum. Maehara
also writes that CCD images of the nova obtained with a 25-cm telescope at
the Kwasan Observatory yield the following magnitudes: Jan. 16.875,
I_c = 7.92; 16.875, R_c = 8.37; 16.876, V = 8.77; 16.877, B = 9.54.
Further to CBET 2128, S. Nakano reports that H. Nishimura measured
mag 8.0 for the nova on Jan. 16.86 UT. Nakano adds that K. Kadota
subsequently measured a star on a U.K. Schmidt Telescope plate (via the
Digitized Sky Survey) taken on 1997 Mar. 31 to have red mag 16.7 and
to be located at R.A. = 17h39m40s.96, Decl. = -21d39'45".4 (equinox 2000.0).
W. Vollmann, Vienna, Austria, reports the following green-filtered
CCD magnitudes (approximately visual) measured from images taken by
Hermann Koberger (Vilaflor, Tenerife, Spain): Jan. 18.299 UT, 8.4;
20.289, 9.0; 21.273, 9.3; 22.250, 9.5.
U. Munari, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Padova Astronomical
Observatory; and S. Dallaporta, Asiago Novae and Symbiotic Stars (ANS)
collaboration, report photometry for this nova: Jan. 19.23 UT, V
= 9.24, B-V = +0.85; 20.23, V = 9.15, B-V = +0.86; 22.22, V = 9.51, B-V
= +0.74.

POSSIBLE NOVA IN SAGITTARIUS

John Seach, Chatsworth Island, NSW, Australia, reports his discovery of
a possible nova on three 6-s CCD exposures (limiting mag 11) obtained on Jan.
20.22 UT with a Nikon D300 camera (+ 50-mm f/1.4 lens + orange filter). The
variable star is located at R.A. = 18h07m26s, Decl. -29d01' (equinox 2000.0);
Nothing is visible at this position on his images taken on 2009 Nov. 15.89
(limiting magnitude 11.5), though several faint stars are located near this
position on a European Southern Observatory photograph taken in 1987 (via
the Digitized Sky Survey).
Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage,
S. Kiyota (Tsukuba, Japan) reports that CCD images taken on Jan. 22 with a
20-cm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (+ Apogee Alta E47+ CCD camera) yield the
following position for the possible nova: R.A. = 18h07m26s.79, Decl.
-29d00'42".8, evidently noting that nothing is visible at this position on
a DSS image. Kiyota also provides the following magnitudes for the new
object: Jan. 22.862 UT, V = 8.98, R_c = 8.38; 22.864, I_c = 7.78.
W. Vollmann, Vienna, Austria, reports that he measured position end figures
27s.0, 44" and green mag 9.3 from unfiltered images taken by H. Koberger
(Vilaflor, Tenerife) with a digital SLR camera (+ 300-mm camera lens) on
Jan. 22.287, adding that nothing is visible at this position within 10"
on Digitized Sky Survey blue and red images to limiting mag approximately 18.

COMET C/2010 B1 (CARDINAL)

An object discovered by R. D. Cardinal (Rothney Astrophysical Observatory,
University of Calgary, 0.50-m f/1.0 reflector; discovery observation below)
and placed on the NEO Confirmation Page has been reported as cometary by
several observers. Y. Ikari (Moriyama, Shiga-Ken, Japan, 0.26-m f/7.0
reflector) notes that some of his exposures on Jan. 22.6 UT showed a coma of
diameter 0'.2. D. Chestnov writes that three stacked exposures on Jan. 22.8
by T. Kryachko (Engelhardt Observatory, Zelenchukskaya Station, 0.3-m f/7
reflector) showed that the object appeared "softer" than the surrounding stars
(FWHM 3".8 for the object, 3".1 for the stars), having a 0'.1-0'.2 coma with a
strong condensation but no tail. J. M. Aymami (Tiana, Spain, 0.25-m f/4.3
Schmidt-Cassegrain) remarks that 39 co-added images totaling 3900 seconds
around Jan. 22.9 showed a compact but nebulous object displaying what seemed to
be a faint coma measuring 7".5. L. Buzzi (Varese, Italy, 0.38-m f/6.8
reflector) writes that a quite deep (limiting magnitude 20.5) stacked image
totaling 25 minutes around Jan. 23.9 in very good seeing (but with thin, high
clouds) showed the object to be stellar in appearance, although inspection of
its profile revealed a FWHM some 20-25 percent larger than nearby stars of
similar brightness.

SUPERNOVA 2010O IN IC 356

A. Dimai and F. Martinelli, on behalf of the CROSS program (cf. IAUC
7373), report their discovery of an apparent supernova (mag about 15.8) on
two unfiltered CCD images (limiting magnitude about 19.5) taken on Jan.
23.87 UT with a Celestron 35.6-cm f/11 telescope at the Martinelli
Observatory near Pisa, Italy. The new object, which was confirmed at mag
about 15.5 on images (limiting mag about 18.5) taken on Jan. 24.75, is
located at R.A. = 4h07m47s.27, Decl. = +69o48'47".0 (equinox 2000.0), which
is 2".6 east and 1".3 north of the nucleus of the galaxy IC 356. A CROSS
image of the same field taken on 2009 Nov. 24 showed nothing at this position
(limiting mag about 19.0), and it does not appear on Palomar Sky Survey
infrared, red, and blue plates. The discovery image has been posted at

SUPERNOVA 2010O IN NGC 3690

P. Challis reports that a spectrum obtained last night of the purported
supernova found in IC 356 (as reported by Dimai on CBET 2143) is in fact the
spectrum of a foreground star, not a supernova. Thus, the designation 2010O
is being re-assigned to the new object described below.
J. Newton and T. Puckett report the discovery of an apparent supernova
(mag 15.6) on an unfiltered CCD frame (limiting mag 18.5) taken with a 0.40-m
telescope in Portal, AZ, on Jan. 24.37 UT in the course of the Puckett
Observatory Supernova Search; the new object was confirmed on frames taken
on Jan. 25.34 by T. Orff (limiting mag 19.5). SN 2010O is located at R.A. =
11h28m33s.86, Decl. = +58o33'51".6 (equinox 2000.0), which is 3".7 east and
5".7 north of the center of its apparent host galaxy, NGC 3690. Nothing is
visible at this position on images taken by Puckett on 2009 Apr. 4 (limiting
mag 19.4). The offsets of 2010O are relative to the eastern component of the
interacting galaxy pair. Note that NGC 3690 is interacting with the galaxy

SUPERNOVA 2010P IN ARP 299
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S. Mattila, Tuorla Observatory; and E. Kankare, Nordic Optical Telescope,
report the discovery on near-infrared images of a second apparent supernova
(cf. CBET 2144), designated 2010P, in the luminous infrared galaxy Arp 299 (=
NGC 3690 + IC 694). The new object was detected via image-subtraction
techniques in near-infrared images obtained using NOTCAM on Jan. 18.2 and 23.1
UT, and in an I-band image obtained using STANCAM on Jan. 23.1 on the Nordic
Optical Telescope. SN 2010P is located at R.A = 11h28m31s.38, Decl. =
+58o33'49".3 (equinox 2000.0), which is 6".2 east and 0".3 north of the K-band
nucleus 'C' of Arp 299. Nothing is visible at this position on NOTCAM
K_s-band images taken on 2009 Nov. 27.2 (limiting mag 17.5). Approximate
magnitudes for 2010P: 2010 Jan. 18.2, J = 17.3, H = 16.7, K_s = 16.1; 2010
Jan. 23.1, I = 18.3, J = 16.8, H = 16.2, K_s = 15.9. The light curve,
absolute magnitude, and colors of 2010P are consistent with a core-collapse
supernova (Mattila and Meikle 2001, MNRAS 324, 325) with a likely extinction
of about five magnitudes in V. Infrared and radio follow-up observations of
2010P are encouraged.

METEOR OUTBURST OF GAMMA URSAE MINORIDS

P. Jenniskens, SETI Institute; and Esko Lyytinen, Helsinki, Finland,
report that six Finnish observers using wide-angle video cameras (limiting
magnitude +1) observed a possible outburst of gamma Ursae Minorids, a newly
discovered stream (cf. CBET 1938) that until now was only known from radar
observations (limiting magnitude +8) of much weaker meteors. On the night
of 2010 Jan. 20/21 (solar long. = 300.7 deg), Ilkka Yrjola (Kuusankoski,
Finland), Pekka Kokko (Ylikiiminki), Mika Jaervinen (Joutsa), Ari Jokinen
(Jarvenpaa), Timo Kantola (Piksamaki), and Jarmo Moilanen (Vaala) detected
meteors radiating from a radiant at R.A. = 228.0 deg, Decl. = +66.4 deg (10
meteors in total: 4, 1, 1, 1, 3, and 2 meteors per site, respectively). One
three-station meteor on Jan. 20d17h17m55s had a radiant at R.A. = 230.2, Decl.
= +67.1 and speed V_g = 29.6 km/s, corresponding to the following osculating
orbital elements: a = 2.84 AU, q = 0.955 AU, e = 0.664, Peri. = 202.3 deg,
Node = 300.404 deg, and i = 48.5 deg (equinox 2000.0). Within the error,
this radiant is identical to that of the recently discovered (CBET 1938)
gamma Ursae Minorids shower (IAU Meteor Shower No. 404), which peaks at solar
long. = 299.0 deg and is active for 11 days. On the day of the video
observation, the annual shower would have radiated from R.A. = 232.5 deg,
Decl. = +66.2 deg, with V_g = 31.8 km/s, in good agreement with the radiant
of what appears to be a meteor outburst. The observed 2010 meteors are
relatively bright (+0.55 mean magnitude), which implies that the shower had a
low magnitude-distribution index of chi = 1.65 +/- 0.35. This suggests that
the shower had an outburst of relatively bright meteors. The shower was
still weakly active on the night of Jan. 21/22, when Yrjola and Jaervinen
captured a two-station meteor radiating from R.A. = 229.8 deg, Decl. = +66.4
deg, V_g = 29.6 km/s (solar long. = 301.612 deg).

URSID METEORS 2009

P. Jenniskens, SETI Institute, reports significant Ursid shower activity
over normal annual rates over the period 2009 Dec. 22d00h-22d15h UT. Pierre
Martin at Ottawa, Canada, reported seeing a -5 magnitude Ursid at 6h00m UT,
which left a 15-s persistent train. Visual observations starting at 7h30m UT
gave apparent rates of 10-15 Ursids/hr under 6.3-magnitude skies. Both Ilkka
Yrjola at Kuusankoski, Finland, and Esko Lyytinen at Helsinki, Finland,
measured elevated rates using the technique of meteor forward scattering.
From their data, the outburst peaked at Dec. 22d09h +/- 0.5 hr UT (solar
longitude = 270.51 +/- 0.02 deg, equinox 2000.0), with a full-width-at-half-
maximum of 6 +/- 1 hr. The shower was rich in overdense echoes. The
outburst was due to the 'filament' dust component of comet 8P/Tuttle, the
encounter of which was predicted at Dec. 22d06h UT with FWHM = 8.2 hr
(Jenniskens 2006, *Meteor Showers and their Parent Comets*, p. 645).
