PROBABLE NOVA IN SCORPIUS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Koichi Nishiyama, Kurume, Fukuoka-ken, Japan; and Fujio Kabashima,
Miyaki-cho, Saga-ken, Japan, report the discovery of a possible nova
(mag 10.5) on two 40-s unfiltered CCD frames (limiting magnitude 12.7)
taken around Feb. 20.857 UT using a 105-mm f/4 camera lens (+ SBIG
STL6303E camera). They confirmed the appearance of the new object at
mag 10.3 on six 10-s unfiltered CCD frames (limiting magnitude 17.4-17.6)
taken around Feb. 21.832 and mag 10.7 on Feb. 22.846 using a Meade 200R
0.40-m f/9.8 reflector (+ SBIG STL1001E camera), from which they measured
the following precise position: R.A. = 17h06m07s.53, Decl. = -37d14'27".4
+/- 0".2 (equinox 2000.0). Nothing is visible at this position on two
past survey frames taken on 2009 Sept. 18.425 (limiting mag 13.6) and Oct.
3.414 (limiting mag 12.3), or on a Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) plate from
1997 Apr. 2.8 (limiting red mag 18.0).
Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage,
other observers have reported observations of the new variable. R. Kaufman
(Bright, Victoria, Australia, DSLR camera + 200-mm zoom camera lens) writes
that unfiltered, green-channel images taken on Feb. 22.594 show the new star
at mag perhaps 11.4. S. Kiyota (Tsukuba, Japan; remotely using a Global-
rent-a-scope 32-cm reflector + SBIG ST-10XE CCD cmaera located at Moorook,
South Australia) reports position end figures 07s.51, 26".9 and the following
magnitudes: Feb. 22.701, V = 12.03; 22.702, B = 13.09; 22.703, R_c = 10.70;
22.705, I_c = 9.65. Kiyota adds that nothing is visible at this position on
a "SERC.V" Digitized Sky Survey plate (no additional information provided).
E. Guido and G. Sostero also imaged this object remotely through a
0.40-m f/3.8 reflector from the GRAS Observatory at Moorook on Feb. 22.8,
their unfiltered CCD image yielding magnitude about 10.1 and position end
figures 07s.50, 27".7; an animation showing their image with respect to an
archival DSS plate is posted at website URL http://bit.ly/9wAoFN.

SUPERNOVA 2010ae IN ESO 162-17

R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P. Gonzalez, P. Lopez, S. Silva, G. Folatelli, R.
Cartier, F. Forster, S. Marchi, and A. Rojas, Universidad de Chile; B. Conuel,
Wesleyan University; and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, J. Haislip, A. Crain, D.
Foster, M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, on behalf of the CHASE project, report the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag approximately 15.9 +/- 0.3) on an unfiltered image taken on
Feb. 22.06 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 3' telescope located at Cerro Tololo.
The new object, which is also present at mag approximately 15.6 +/- 0.3 in an
image taken on Feb. 23.01, is located at R.A. = 7h15m54s.65 +/- 0".1, Decl. =
-57o20'36".9 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 0".6 east and 0".2
south of the center of the galaxy ESO 162-17. Nothing is visible at this
position on archival images taken on Feb. 10.11 and 17.11 (limiting mag 18.0).
M. Stritzinger, Las Campanas Observatory (LCO); G. Folatelli, Universidad
de Chile; G. Pignata, Universidad Andres Bello; and M. M. Phillips, LCO, on
behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project and the Millennium Center for
Supernova Science, report that they obtained an optical spectrum (range
486-750 nm) of supernova 2010ae on Feb. 23.1 UT with the Gemini South
telescope (+ GMOS). This spectrum suggests that the object is a reddened
(the equivalent width of Na I D is 0.12 nm), peculiar type-Ia event most
similar to supernova 2006gz (Hicken et al. 2007, Ap.J. 669, 17). The
spectrum consists of prevalent Si II (rest 635.5 nm) and S II (rest 544.9 and
562.3 nm) absorption features. In addition, a strong absorption feature is
present at 651 nm and a weaker one at 718.1 nm, which is tentatively
suggested to be formed by C II (rest 658.0 and 723.4 nm). Adopting a
recession velocity of 1098 km/s (H I Parkes All-Sky Survey Final Catalog;
Wong et al. 2006, MNRAS 371, 1855) for the host galaxy (ESO 162-17 is
classified as a possible type-Sb-peculiar), an approximate expansion velocity
of 4600 km/s was derived from the absorption minimum of the Si II line (rest
635.5 nm). A similar measurement of the C II feature (rest 658.0 nm) yields
a blue-shift of 4300 km/s. Alternatively, if the 651-nm feature was formed
from H-alpha, an expansion velocity of approximately 3600 km/s is obtained.

NOVA OPHIUCHI 2010 No. 2

Ulisse Munari, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Padova Astronomical
Observatory; and Sergio Dallaporta, Asiago Novae and Symbiotic Stars (ANS)
collaboration, report the following magnitudes measured for this nova:
Feb. 21.201 UT, V = 9.26, B-V = +1.12, V-R_c = +0.58, V-I_c = +1.12.
Wolfgang Vollmann, Vienna, Austria, reports that he measures green
magnitude 9.4 (approximately visual) from an image obtained on Feb. 20.268
UT by Hermann Koberger (Vilaflor, Tenerife) using a 300-mm-focal-length
lens and a DSLR camera.

NOVA SCORPII 2010

K. Ayani, Bisei Astronomical Observatory (BAO), writes that a low-
resolution spectrum (range 400-800 nm; resolution 0.5 nm at H-alpha) of the
probable nova reported on CBET 2183 was obtained with the BAO 1-m telescope
on Feb. 23.88 UT. This shows prominent H-alpha emission with P-Cyg
absorption upon a red continuum. The FWHM and equivalent width of the
H-alpha emission component are about 1800 km/s and 70 nm, respectively, and
the absorption bottom is blueshifted by 1600 km/s with respect to the
emission peak. The spectrum also shows emission lines of H-beta and Fe II
(multiplet 42), which are weak and probably due to large interstellar
extinction. These features show that the new object is a "Fe II"-type nova.

APPARENT NOVAE IN M31: M31N 2010-01a AND M31N 2010-01d

EDITOR'S NOTE: This text replaces that on CBET 2181.
W. Pietsch and M. Henze, Max-Planck-Institut fuer Extraterrestrische
Physik; and the XMM-Newton/Chandra M31 nova-monitoring collaboration, report
the discovery of an apparent nova close to the center of M31 in 2360-s
UVW1-filter (240-360 nm) images. Designated M31N 2010-01d, the object was
first detected in observations starting on Jan. 15.52 UT with an instrumental
magnitude of 15.75; located at R.A. = 0h42m42s.81, Decl. = +41d16'14".7
(equinox 2000.0; uncertainty 0".3), which is 17" west and 5" north of the
core of M31, the presumed nova was also detected in the two following XMM-
Newton observations of the monitoring campaign. M31N 2010-01d and M31N
2010-01a (cf. CBETs 2124, 2127, 2136) were also detected in observations with
the Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) on board the Swift satellite starting
on Jan. 27.05 in the uvw1 (range 181-321 nm; 1486 s exposure time), uvm2
(166-268 nm, 525 s), and uvw2 (112-264 nm, 1550 s) bandpasses, performed to
monitor x-ray emission from the nova M31N 2009-10b. Additional UVW1
magnitudes for M31N 2010-01d: Jan. 25.10, 15.80; Feb. 2.10, 15.49
(uncertainty +/- -.01 mag). Additional uvw1 magnitude for M31N 2010-01d:
Jan. 27.05, 16.60 +/- 0.05. The XMM-Newton UVW1 magnitudes are
instrumental (Vega); the SWIFT magnitudes are on the UVOT photometric
system (Poole et al. 2008, MNRAS 383, 627). The magnitudes have not been
corrected for extinction.
K. Hornoch, Ondrejov Observatory, measures position end figures 42s.79,
14".3 (offset 17".3 west, 5".8 north) for M31N 2010-01d and provides the
following magnitudes from co-added R-band CCD frames: Jan. 2.799, [19.9 (CCD
frame taken during software tests by P. Kubanek, J. Gorosabel, P. Martorell,
and M. Jelinek with the 1.23-m telescope at Calar Alto); 16.795, 16.7 +/- 0.3
(K. Hornoch, 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov); 30.845, 19.5: (Kubanek, N.
Morales, J. L. Ortiz, Gorosabel, and Jelinek, 1.23-m telescope at Calar Alto);
31.838, 18.9 +/- 0.3 (Kubanek, Morales, Ortiz, Gorosabel, and Jelinek).

B. D. Warner, Palmer Divide Observatory, Colorado Springs, CO; A. W.
Harris, Space Science Institute, La Canada, CA, U.S.A.; P. Pravec,
Ondrejov Observatory; and J. Pollock, Appalachian State University,
report that photometric observations obtained during Feb. 2-20 reveal
that minor planet (5899) is a binary system with an orbital period of
16.7 +/- 0.1 hr. The primary lightcurve amplitude of of 0.04 mag
suggests a nearly spheroidal shape. Several periods in the range of
3-4 hr were found for the primary, but due to the low amplitude it is
not possible to state any one period with certainty. Observed mutual
eclipse/occultation events indicate a secondary-to-primary mean-diameter
ratio of Ds/Dp greater-than-or-equal-to 0.32. Follow-up observations
after the full moon are encouraged to see if the shape and/or depth
of the mutual events change.

SUPERNOVA 2010P

S. Ryder, Anglo-Australian Observatory; S. Mattila, Tuorla Observatory;
E. Kankare, Nordic Optical Telescope; and M. Perez-Torres, Instituto de
Astrofisica de Andalucia, report that they obtained low-resolution
spectroscopy of 2010P (cf. CBET 2145) on Feb. 11.5 UT using the Gemini North
8-m telescope (+ GMOS; range 470-890 nm). Despite significant reddening, the
spectrum is found to be consistent with a H-deficient core-collapse supernova.
Comparison with a library of supernova spectra using both the "GELATO" code
(Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383) and the "SuperNova IDentification"
code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) yields good matches to several
type-Ib and type-IIb supernovae between 1 and 3 weeks after maximum light,
when the spectrum of 2010P is dereddened by the equivalent of 5 mag of
extinction in the V band (cf. CBET 2149). Near-infrared photometric and
radio monitoring of both supernovae 2010P and 2010O (cf. CBETs 2143, 2144,
2149) is continuing.

U SCORPII

H. L. Worters, South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO);
S. P. S. Eyres and M. T. Rushton, University of Central Lancashire;
and B. Schaefer, Louisiana State University, report that the
resumption of optical flickering in the recurrent nova U Sco was
detected on Feb. 5.174-5.222 UT, only eight days after the most
recent outburst (Jan. 28.4743 UT; cf. IAUC 9111). Flickering was
not apparent in any of the observations on each night from Jan. 29
to Feb. 3 with the SAAO 1.9-m telescope and CCD camera. The
amplitude of flickering is around 0.2 mag over the course of an
hour, consistent with accretion resuming in the system. This means
that the ejecta are now becoming optically thin, and an accretion
disk has already been re-established, placing a lower limit of 7
days on this event. Further observations are urged to follow
development of this rapidly changing recurrent nova, including
characterizing eclipses that should now be visible again.

COMET 29P/SCHWASSMANN-WACHMANN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding the outburst of this comet that was noted on CBET
2160, D. T. Durig, University of the South, Sewanee, TN, reports
that astrometric CCD images taken with a 30-cm reflector by Durig
with six other observers show a brightening from mag 15-16 on Jan.
27.2 UT to mag 12.1-12.3 on Feb. 4.14-4.17. From astrometry
reported to the Minor Planet Center, the last pre-outburst CCD
magnitude (16.1) appears to be from Feb. 1.95 (J. Camarasa,
Sabadell, Spain).

COMETS C/2009 N2, C/2009 N3, C/2009 O5, C/2009 P3 (SOHO)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional presumed comets have been found on SOHO website
images -- Kreutz sungrazers except for C/2009 N3 (non-group).
C/2009 N2 was small and stellar in appearance (mag about 7-7.5) in
C3 images, but small and slightly diffuse in C2 images. C/2009 N3
was stellar in appearance and brighter (mag about 6.5-7 at about
July 5.04 UT). C/2009 O5 was also stellar in appearance (mag about
6.5). C/2009 P3 was slightly elongated (mag about 5.5-6).

COMET P/2010 B2 (WISE)

A. Mainzer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, reports that an object
discovered by the new earth-orbiting satellite WISE appears
extended with a hazy coma of diameter about 10"-20" and a tail
about 15" long toward the west-northwest in all the WISE infrared
images (discovery observation tabulated below). Following posting
on the Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage, D. J. Tholen
(Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii) writes that three
stacked 20-s Megacam r-band images taken at Mauna Kea with the
3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (average seeing about 1".45)
by A. Draginda in morning twilight on Feb. 7.66 UT show that the
object is clearly non-stellar in all three images, but with no
obvious tail. J. V. Scotti (Lunar and Planetary Laboratory,
University of Arizona) reports that images taken on Feb. 8.47 with
the Spacewatch 1.8-m f/2.7 reflector at Kitt Peak show the object
to be diffuse with a coma diameter of 8" (magnitude V = 20.2), with
a possible westward tail involved with a field star.

sungrazers have been found on SOHO website images. All were small
and stellar in appearance except for C/2009 P5 (slightly elongated,
with peak mag about 6.5). C/2009 P4 and C/2009 Q6 peaked near mag
7, whereas C/2009 Q7 (which was also found by M. Kusiak) peaked
near mag about 7-7.5.

small and stellar in appearance (peak mag about 6.5-7). Comets
C/2009 V1 and C/2009 V2 were very faint (peak mag about 8-8.5) and
slightly diffuse. A. Watson also found images for the latter two
comets in STEREO/SECCHI HI-1 website data.

COMET P/2010 D1 (WISE)

A. Mainzer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, reports that an object
discovered on 12- and 22-micron images by the WISE satellite
(discovery observation tabulated below) shows a `hazy' coma at
least 35" in diameter with a hint of a faint tail; it shows a less-
pronounced nuclear condensation than the WISE images of P/2010 B2
(cf. IAUC 9115) and P/2009 WJ_50 (cf. IAUC 9117). R. S. McMillan,
University of Arizona, reports that Spacewatch CCD images taken
with the 1.8-m f/2.7 reflector on Feb. 19.2 UT show the object to
be more diffuse than stars, despite poor seeing, of magnitude V =
21.1-21.5, with an extension 10"-15" long toward p.a. 80 deg.

Survey observations from 2009 Nov. 9 and Dec. 10), the following
elliptical orbital elements, residuals, and an ephemeris appear on

V496 SCUTI AND V5584 SAGITTARII

R. W. Russell, E. A. Laag, and R. J. Rudy, Aerospace
Corporation; and M. A. Skinner and S. A. Gregory, Boeing
Corporation, report 3- to 14-micron spectroscopy of V496 Scuti (cf.
IAUC 9093) and V5584 Sgr (cf. IAUC 9089) on Feb. 10 using the
Aerospace Corporation's Broadband Array Spectrograph System on the
3.6-m AEOS telescope. Both novae have formed dust since previous
observations in December. Thermal emission from this dust
dominates the infrared continuum in both objects. The dust
temperatures are 1200 +/- 100 K for V496 Sct and 880 +/- 50 K for
V5584 Sgr. There is no evidence for carbon-monoxide emission in
V496 Sct, and it is likely that the period of CO emission reported
previously for this object (IAUC 9099, CBET 2069) has ended.
