F. Bufano, S. Benetti, and E. Cappellaro, Istituto Nazionale di
Astrofisica (INAF), Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova (OAP); S. Covino, INAF,
Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera (OAB); S. Vergani, Galaxie, Etoile,
Physique, Instrumentation (GEPI), Observatoire de Paris, and Astroparticule

and Service d'Astrophysique, Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (CEA); M.
Della Valle, INAF, Osservatorio di Capodimonte; E. Pian, INAF, Osservatorio
Astronomico di Trieste; S. Campana and G. Tagliaferri, INAF, OAB; D. Malesani
and J. Fynbo, Dark Cosmology Centre, University of Copenhagen; M. Turatto,
INAF, Osservatorio Astronomico di Catania; F. Patat, European Southern
Observatory (ESO); and P. Mazzali, INAF, OAP, on behalf of a larger
collaboration, report that a high-dispersion optical spectrum (range 350-900
nm, resolution 0.02 nm) of the afterglow associated with GRB 100316D (cf.
GCN 10496; visible at http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn3/10496.gcn3) was obtained
with the Very Large Telescope (+ XShooter) at ESO/Paranal on Mar. 23.04 UT.
The spectrum of the source located at R.A. = 7h10m31s.8 and Decl. =
-56o15'20".2 (equinox 2000.0; as measured on the XShooter acquisition image)
shows very broad bumps with peaks measured at about 430 and 670 nm,
reminiscent of an emerging broadline type-Ic supernova (in agreement with
Chornock et al., GCN 10541). Indeed, above 600 nm, the spectrum of this
source shows some similarities with that of SN 1998bw (Patat et al. 2001,
Ap.J. 555, 900) taken seven days after outburst. There are, however, major
differences with the spectrum of this transient, showing a significant flux
deficiency in the range 450-550 nm, in comparison with SN 1998bw. The
designation 2010bh is assigned to this supernova.

SUPERNOVA 2010bh

R. Chornock, A. M. Soderberg, R. J. Foley, E. Berger, A. Frebel, and P.
Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics; J. D. Simon and S.
Sheppard, Carnegie Observatories, report on the spectroscopic discovery of a
supernova associated with GRB 100316D (Stamatikos et al., GCN 10496; visible
at http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn3/10496.gcn3); the designation 2010bh was
announced on CBET 2227: "Nightly observations were obtained with the MagE,
LDSS3, and IMACS spectrographs on the twin 6.5-m Magellan telescopes,
starting on Mar. 18.0 UT, approximately 1.5 days after the Burst Alert
Telescope trigger. All spectra included the variable point source found by
Levan et al. (GCN 10523) and Wiersema et al. (GCN 10525) within the slit
aperture. Our spectra show superposed high-equivalent-width nebular
emission lines at z = 0.059, in agreement with Vergani et al. (GCN 10512).
Our earliest spectra show a very blue continuum with a few weak stellar
features, indicative of some starlight from a young stellar population
falling within our spectroscopic aperture, but no other obvious features. By
the time of our most recent MagE spectrum (range 350-1000 nm), from Mar. 22.0
UT (5.5 days after the GRB), a few broad undulations in the continuum have
developed, although contamination from the galaxy light, and possibly an
afterglow, remains significant. The strongest feature has a flux peak near
785 nm (in the rest frame) and a minimum near 728 nm. An additional local
minimum in the continuum is located near 570 nm, with a broad maximum located
to the red of that. The appearance of these undulations in the continuum is
broadly similar to those seen in peculiar broad-lined type-Ic supernovae such
as SN 1998bw."

V2674 OPHIUCHI = NOVA OPHIUCHI 2010 No. 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As first announced on CBET 2176, S. Nakano (Sumoto, Japan)
reported the discovery by H. Nishimura (Miyawaki, Kakegawa,
Shizuoka-ken, Japan) of a possible nova on frames taken on Feb.
18.845 UT using a Minolta 120-mm f/3.5 lens and a Canon EOS 5D
Digital camera mounted on a Takahashi EM100 equatorial telescope;
Nakano measured mag 9.4 for the variable from Nishimura's JPEG
image (limiting mag 12.7), along with the following precise
position (uncertainty +/- 4"): R.A. = 17h26m32s.19, Decl. =
-28o49'36".3 (equinox 2000.0). Nishimura notes that nothing is
visible at this position on his frames taken during 2009 Feb.-2010
Feb. 13.84 (limiting mag 11). Additional CCD magnitudes
(unfiltered unless noted otherwise) and position end figures for
the nova: Feb. 19.48, R_c = 9.02, 32s.11, 38".5 (S. Kiyota,
Tsukuba, Japan, 0.30-m reflector, remotely from near Mayhill, NM,
U.S.A.); 19.778, 9.0, 32s.08, 38".5 (K. Itagaki, Takanezawa station,
Tochigi-ken, Japan, 0.30-m reflector); 19.825, 8.9, 32s.11, 39".0
(K. Kadota, Ageo, Japan, 0.25-m reflector); 20.5, 9.4:, 32s.15,
41".8 (E. Guido and G. Sostero, 0.25-m reflector at the GRAS
Observatory near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A.). Kiyota adds that nothing is
visible at this position on several Digitized Sky Survey plates.
K. Imamura and K. Tanabe, Okayama University of Science, report
(via H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University) that a low-resolution spectrum
of the presumed nova, obtained on Feb. 19.850 UT with a 0.28-m
telescope, shows a clear H_alpha feature with a P-Cyg profile,
which suggests that the object is a genuine classical nova; an
absorption minimum of the H_alpha feature is about 1000 km/s,
blueshifted from the emission peak. M. Fujii, Kurashiki, Okayama,
Japan, writes (also via Yamaoka) that a low-resolution spectrum of
this object, obtained on Feb. 19.86 UT with his 0.28-m telescope,
shows -- in addition to the Balmer lines with P-Cyg profile -- a Fe
II (37, 42, 49) emission feature, which suggests that the variable
is a "Fe II"-class nova. Fujii measured that the blueshift of the
H_alpha absorption minimum from the emission peak is about 700 km/s,
and the equivalent width of Na I D lines is about 0.4 nm.
Additional details concerning this nova can be found on CBETs 2176,
2179, and 2185.
E. Kazarovets and N. N. Samus report that the formal GCVS
designation V2674 Oph has been assigned to this nova.

V1310 SCORPII = NOVA SCORPII 2010
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As first announced on CBET 2183, K. Nishiyama (Kurume, Fukuoka-
ken, Japan) and F. Kabashima (Miyaki-cho, Saga-ken, Japan) reported
the discovery of a possible nova (mag 10.5) on two unfiltered CCD
frames taken around Feb. 20.857 UT using a 105-mm f/4 camera lens
(+ SBIG STL6303E camera); they confirmed the appearance of the new
object at mag 10.3 on six unfiltered CCD frames taken around Feb.
21.832 (and mag 10.7 on Feb. 22.846) using a Meade 0.40-m reflector
(+ SBIG STL1001E camera), from which they measured the following
precise position: R.A. = 17h06m07s.53, Decl. = -37o14'27".4
(equinox 2000.0). Nothing is visible at this position on two past
survey frames taken on 2009 Sept. 18.425 (limiting mag 13.6) and
Oct. 3.414 (limiting mag 12.3), or on a Digitized Sky Survey (DSS)
plate from 1997 Apr. 2.8 (limiting red mag 18.0). Following
posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, other
observers have reported observations of the new variable. S.
Kiyota (Tsukuba, Japan; remotely using a Global-rent-a-scope 32-cm
reflector + SBIG ST-10XE CCD camera located at Moorook, South
Australia) reports position end figures 07s.51, 26".9 and the
following magnitudes: Feb. 22.701, V = 12.03; 22.702, B = 13.09;
22.703, R_c = 10.70; 22.705, I_c = 9.65. Kiyota adds that nothing
is visible at this position on a V-band Digitized Sky Survey plate
from 1988 Apr. 14 (no limiting magnitude provided). E. Guido and
G. Sostero also imaged this object remotely through a 0.40-m
reflector from the GRAS Observatory at Moorook on Feb. 22.8,
yielding position end figures 07s.50, 27".7 and unfiltered CCD mag
about 10.1. W. Vollmann, Vienna, Austria, reports the following
green (approximately visual) magnitudes for the variable from DSLR
images taken with a 0.60-m f/3.5 reflector by H. Koberger,
Vilaflor, Tenerife: Feb. 24.279, 12.3; 25.254, 12.4. Koberger
adds that low-resolution spectra (grating 100 lines/mm) taken
around the same times clearly show strong H_alpha emission.
K. Ayani, Bisei Astronomical Observatory (BAO), writes that a
low-resolution spectrum (range 400-800 nm; resolution 0.5 nm at
H_alpha) of the new variable, obtained with the BAO 1-m telescope
on Feb. 23.88 UT, shows prominent H_alpha emission (FWHM about 1800
km/s; equivalent width 70 nm) with P-Cyg absorption upon a red
continuum; the absorption bottom is blueshifted by 1600 km/s with
respect to the emission peak. The spectrum also shows emission
lines of H_beta and Fe II (multiplet 42), which are weak and
probably due to large interstellar extinction. These features
suggest that the new object is a "Fe II"-type nova.
E. Kazarovets and N. N. Samus report that the GCVS designation
V1310 Sco has been assigned to this nova.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

J. V. Scotti, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, reports his
discovery of a diffuse comet with a short tail extending toward the
northwest on CCD mosaic images obtained with the 0.9-m f/3
Spacewatch reflector at Kitt Peak (discovery observation tabulated
below). Nine co-added exposures by Scotti on Mar. 14.3 UT with the
Spacewatch 1.8-m reflector show a faint tail clearly visible
extending 0'.62 in p.a. 304 deg and a small, slightly diffuse coma
of diameter 8".4; stacked images on Mar. 15 show a coma diameter of
10".3 and a tail 1'.09 long in p.a. 306 deg (the end of the tail in
a less-crowded star region than on Mar. 14). T. H. Bressi finds
that images with the same telescope on Mar. 17.4 show a tail in p.a.
320 deg. After posting on the Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP'
webpage, numerous other CCD astrometrists have commented on the
object's cometary appearance. P. Holvorcem, Campinas, Brazil,
writes that three 270-s co-added exposures taken with the Tenagra
0.81-m telescope around Mar. 15.36 show a coma about 7" in diameter
and a narrow, straight, 17" tail toward p.a. 291 deg, while three
co-added 360-s exposures taken around Mar. 17.34 under poorer
seeing show a coma of diameter about 9" and a 5" tail toward p.a.
280 deg. L. Buzzi (Varese, Italy, 0.60-m reflector, Mar. 17.0-17.1)
notes that stacked images reveal a 10" condensed coma and a tail at
least 25" long in p.a. 305 deg. S. Foglia reports that 18 stacked
60-s images taken by R. Holmes (Ashmore, IL, U.S.A., 0.61-m
reflector, Mar. 17.24-17.29) show an 8" coma and a 40" tail in p.a.
315 deg. R-band images taken with the Magdalena Ridge 2.4-m
reflector by W. H. Ryan and E. V. Ryan on Mar. 17.4 show a distinct
tail at p.a. about 300 deg. L. Elenin finds that six stacked 300-s
unfiltered CCD exposures taken with a 0.36-m astrograph at Tzec
Maun Observatory (near Mayhill, NM, USA) on Mar. 17.44 show a 4"
diffuse coma and a 3".5 tail in p.a. 315 deg. Twenty 120-s
unfiltered exposures taken remotely by E. Guido and G. Sostero with
a 0.25-m reflector near Mayhill on Mar. 17.5 show a coma nearly 10"
in diameter with a broad tail about 25" long toward the northwest.

a strongly condensed coma about 10"-12" wide, slightly elongated on
the north side (p.a. 350-40 deg) on four co-added 60-s exposures.
After posting on the Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage,
numerous other CCD astrometrists have commented on the object's
cometary appearance. A distinct coma is present in R-band images
taken with the Magdalena Ridge 2.4-m reflector by W. H. Ryan and E.
V. Ryan on Mar. 18.2 UT. S. Foglia has measured a 5"-diameter coma
and a 20"-long tail in p.a. 35 deg on nine stacked 60-s images
taken by R. Holmes (Ashmore, IL, U.S.A., 0.61-m reflector) on Mar.

PRINTED BACK ISSUES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since its move to Cambridge in 1965, the Central Bureau has
maintained an extensive archive of back issues of the printed IAUCs;
these have been sent to interested individuals upon request (for a
small charge). Having inherited some years' worth of back issues
from Copenhagen Observatory at the time of the 1965 transfer, we
now have several fairly continuous sets of printed IAUCs going back
to No. 1727 (dated 1960 May 21). Unfortunately, the Bureau cannot
continue to maintain such a large collection of back issues, which

discarding any of the back issues of these Circulars, we now ask

V407 CYGNI
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Bureau received reports by Japanese amateurs (K. Nishiyama
and F. Kabashima; T. Kojima; K. Sakaniwa; and A. Tago) of a
possible new 7th-mag nova in Cygnus on wide-field camera-lens CCD
images taken during Mar. 10.8-11.8 UT. Nishiyama and Kabashima
suggested that this might be an unusually bright outburst of V407
Cyg (their astrometry yielding R.A. = 21h02m09s.83, Decl. =
+45o46'33".0, equinox 2000.0) -- not known to have been brighter
than mag 13 since its 1936 discovery; it had been classified as a
Mira variable with a symbiotic-star spectrum (e.g., Duerbeck 1987,
Space Sci. Rev. 45, 1). Visual magnitude estimates by P. Schmeer,
Bischmisheim, Germany: Mar. 12.184, 7.9; 17.183, 8.9; 18.191, 9.1.
U. Munari et al. report (CBET 2204) that spectra from Mar. 13.09
show the absorption spectrum of the Mira star that is completely
overwhelmed by the blue continuum from the outbursting component, a
scenario reminiscent of the symbiotic recurrent nova RS Oph; the
broad component of the Balmer emission series and He I lines looks
closely similar to the spectrum of He/N classical novae.
Additional details appear on CBETs 2199, 2205, and 2210.

COMET P/2002 FA_9 = P/2010 F2 (LINEAR)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

R. H. McNaught has rediscovered 2002 FA_9, an apparently
asteroidal object discovered by the LINEAR survey last year
(discovery observation, from MPS 55865, tabulated below), on CCD
images taken with the 0.5-m Uppsala Schmidt telescope (McNaught's
first observation from 2010 Mar. 20 is also tabulated below).
McNaught found a slightly diffuse 10" coma on the 20-s discovery
images in mediocre seeing; three stacked 60-s follow-up images
show a 16" coma extending to the north. The orbit on MPO 30730
requires a correction of Delta(T) = -0.8 day.

COMET C/2010 F3 (SCOTTI)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

J. V. Scotti, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, reports his
discovery of another comet, described as slightly diffuse with a
tail on 0.9-m Spacewatch reflector CCD mosaic images taken on Mar.
20 (discovery observation tabulated below); co-added images taken
on Mar. 20.3 UT with the Spacewatch 1.8-m reflector (6.8 min
exposure time) show a coma diameter of 5" with a narrow tail that
extends to at least 1'.06 (with a possible faint extension out to
1'.47) in p.a. 289 deg. Scotti adds that nine co-added images with
the latter telescope on Mar. 21.3 show a 7" coma with a long,
narrow tail extending at least to 1'.9 in p.a. 289 deg, and
possibly as far as 3'.0 in p.a. 288 deg. Following posting on the
Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage, other CCD astrometrists have
also commented on the object's cometary appearance. W. H. Ryan
(Magdalena Ridge 2.4-m reflector, Mar. 22.3) finds that his R-band
images show a coma and a thin tail in p.a. about 290 deg. M. Busch
and D. Koschny measaured a tail about 20" long in p.a. 280 deg on
images taken on Mar. 22.96 by D. Abreu with the 1.0-m f/4.4
reflector of the ESA Optical Ground Station at Tenerife. P.
Birtwhistle (Great Shefford, Berkshire, England, 0.40-m reflector,
Mar. 23.0) finds a coma diameter of about 8" and a straight, thin
tail 30" long in p.a. 287 deg.

COMET C/2009 O2 (CATALINA)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

H. Sato (Ota-ku, Tokyo, Japan, 0.30-m reflector) finds a very
diffuse coma (3' x 5') with no condensation on images taken on Mar.
12.5 and 13.5 UT, suggesting an apparent disintegration of this
comet. L. Buzzi, Varese, Italy, reports that images with taken on
Mar. 13.18 (0.60-m reflector) show no clear central condensation
(contrary to his images from Mar. 5.18). H. Mikuz, Crni Vrh
Observatory, finds that R-band images taken on Mar. 8.16 with a
0.60-m telescope show a coma of mag 16 without distinct central
condensation and a fan-like tail about 1'.5 long in p.a. about 300
deg, while images from Mar. 14.17 show a fading to mag about 17.

COMET C/2010 F4 (MACHHOLZ)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don Machholz reports his visual discovery of a diffuse comet
with coma diameter about 2' (DC = 2), using a 0.47-m f/4.8
reflector (77x) at his home in Colfax, CA, U.S.A., in the course of
his comet-hunting program on Mar. 23, as tabulated below; no motion
was detected in 20 minutes due to encroaching twilight. Machholz
found the comet again of similar appearance (the magnitude then
given as 11.5-12) on the morning of Mar. 26, indicating that it is
moving rapidly towards the sun. Machholz had searched for 607
hours since his previous find on 2004 Aug. 27 (cf. IAUCs 8394,
8395). After posting on the Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage,
three Japanese amateurs have reported confirmation of the new comet.
Y. Ikari (Moriyama, Shiga-ken, 0.26-m reflector + CCD) reports a
coma diameter of 0'.5. K. Kadota (Ageo, Saitama-ken, 0.25-m
reflector + CCD) finds that his images taken through clouds show
the object to be diffuse (coma diameter 1'.5) with central
condensation and no tail. K. Yoshimoto (Yamaguchi-ken, 0.25-m
reflector) reports that a visual observation yields total mag 11.0
and coma diameter 1'.3 (DC = 3) on Mar. 26.830 UT.
