Texas A&M University and University of Texas, on behalf of the ROTSE
collaboration, report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag about 18.0),
discovered in unfiltered images taken on 2009 Dec. 15.47 UT with the 0.45-m
ROTSE-IIIb telescope at McDonald Observatory. The transient was monitored
for the subsequent 12 days or so, and on Dec. 27.43 its magnitude was about
17.3. SN 2009np is located at R.A. = 12h27m06s.62, Decl. = +6o25'33".3
(equinox 2000.0; uncertainty about 1"), which is 0".04 east and 0".01 north
of the center of the host galaxy (SDSS J122706.61+062533.3; z = 0.0255). A
finding chart for the new object can be found at the following website URL:

unfiltered light curve showed an unusual double-peaked shape with a
secondary maximum occuring on Dec. 26.
A spectrum (range 420-1080 nm), obtained on 2010 Jan. 1.40 with the
9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by J.
Caldwell, shows a blue continuum with broad features of Si II (635 nm), Fe
II (the "W" feature at 500 nm), and the Ca II infrared triplet --
characteristics of a supernova of type Ic or Ia near maximum light. O I
(777 nm) is absent or very weak, and all the features are broader and weaker
than those in normal type-Ia supernovae. A narrow H_alpha emission from the
host galaxy is also detected. The GELATO code (Harutyunyan et al. 2008,
A.Ap. 488, 383; https://gelato.tng.iac.es) finds SNe 1990W (of type Ib/c, at
one day after maximum) and 2004aw (type Ic, between 1 and 9 days after
maximum) as the best-matching templates. On the contrary, the SuperNova
IDentification code (SNID, Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024)
classifies 2009np as a type-Ia or type-Ic supernova with 75- and 25-percent
probability, respectively. Despite the result by SNID, the better match
with the spectra of type-Ic supernovae and the position of 2009np within its
host galaxy (very close to the apparent center) make the type-Ic
classification more likely. The expansion velocity, calculated from the
minimum of the Si II 635.5 nm feature, is 11000 km/s.

SUPERNOVA 2010A IN UGC 2019

L. Cox, J. Newton, and T. Puckett report the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag 16.0) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 18.6) taken with
a 0.40-m reflector at Portal, AZ, U.S.A., on Jan. 4.14 UT in the course of the
Puckett Observatory Supernova Search. The new object, which was confirmed at
mag 15.8 on images (limiting mag 18.9) taken by T. Orff on Jan. 5.17 with a
0.40-m reflector in Portal, is located at R.A. = 2h32m39s.46, Decl. =
+0o37'10".2 (equinox 2000.0), which is 2".4 east and 6".9 north of the center
of UGC 2019. Nothing is visible at this position on images taken by Puckett
on 2009 Nov. 16 (limiting mag 19.2).

SUPERNOVA 2009nq IN NGC 7549

Texas A&M University and University of Texas, on behalf of the ROTSE
collaboration, report the discovery of a new supernova (mag about 16.2) in
unfiltered images taken on 2009 Dec. 28.09 UT with the 0.45-m ROTSE-IIIb
telescope at McDonald Observatory. The new object, which was observed again
on 2010 Jan. 3.06 (at mag 15.3) and Jan. 5.07 (mag 15.2), is located at R.A.
= 23h15m16s.97, Decl. = +19o01'22".5 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty about 1"),
which is 4".2 west and 67".9 south of the center of the host galaxy NGC
7549; a finding chart for 2009nq can be found at the following website URL:

A spectrum, obtained on Jan. 4.32 with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope
(+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by S. C. Odewahn, shows 2009nq to
be a type-Ia supernova around maximum. According to SNID (Blondin and Tonry
2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), the spectrum best resembles those of SN 2002er
(at 2.5 days before maximum) and SN 1994S (at 1.4 days after maximum) at
redshift z = 0.018, consistent with the redshift of NGC 7549 (z = 0.0157).
The photospheric velocity, estimated from the minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm
feature, and corrected for the host-galaxy redshift, is about 10200 km/s.

SUPERNOVA 2009nr IN UGC 8255

Pavel Balanutsa and Vladimir Lipunov, Sternberg Astronomical Institute,
on behalf of the MASTER robotic-telescopes network, report the discovery of
an apparent supernova (mag 13.6) on a 60-s unfiltered CCD image (limiting
mag 16.2 with an Apogee AltaU16m camera) taken on 2009 Dec. 22.901 UT at
Blagoveschensk. Images (limiting magnitudes V = 17.8, R = 18.1) taken at
Kislovodsk on Dec. 31.1 yield V = 13.1 and R = 13.5 for the new object. SN
2009nr is located at R.A. = 13h10m58s.95, Decl. = +11d29'29".3 (equinox
2000.0), which is 36" east and 50" north of the center of the galaxy UGC 8255.
Nothing is visible at this position on twenty reference images taken over
the past six years with a robotic telescope near Moscow, including one taken
on 2008 Apr. 2 (limiting red mag 17.5). The discovery image is posted at

Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage,
M. Nissinen and V.-P. Hentunen, Varkaus, Finland, report that they obtained
multiple 120-s R-band images (limiting mag 17.2) of 2009nr remotely on 2010
Jan. 5.76 with the 32-cm Global-Rent-a-Scope telescope GRAS09 (+ SBIG ST-10
CCD camera) at Moorook, Australia, measuring the new object to have magnitude
R = 14.3 and position end figures 58s.97, 29".3 (and the galaxy center's
position end figures 56s.5, 28'39"). Nothing is visible at this position on
a Palomar Sky Survey red F plate (via the Digitized Sky Survey) to limiting
mag 20.8.
Further to CBET 2095, W. Li, S. B. Cenko, and A. V. Filippenko have
just reported the independent discovery of 2009nr on an unfiltered KAIT image
taken on 2010 Jan. 6.53, providing mag 13.9 and position end figures 58s.94,
29".6.; nothing was visible at this position on a KAIT image from 2009 Apr.
19.18 (limiting mag 19.0).

SUPERNOVAE 2009nr AND 2010A

R. J. Foley, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, on behalf of
the CfA Supernova Program, reports that inspection of CCD spectra (range
350-740 nm), obtained by G. Esquerdo on Jan. 7 UT with the Whipple
Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows that 2009nr (cf. CBET 2111) and
2010A (cf. CBET 2109) are both type-Ia supernovae. Cross-correlation with a
library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification" code (SNID;
Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that both may be similar
to the luminous supernovae 1991T and 1999aa (e.g., Filippenko et al. 1992,
Ap.J. 384, L15; Garavini et al. 2004, A.J. 128, 387). SN 2009nr is most
similar to SN 1991T at 12 days past maximum brightness. SN 2010A is similar
to SN 1999aa at one day before maximum brightness, but is also similar to
the "normal" type-Ia supernova 1999ee at 9 days before maximum brightness.
Removing the host-galaxy recession velocity of 6180 km/s (found from narrow
emission lines), the minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm absorption feature is
blueshifted by 12700 km/s.

COMET C/2010 A1 (HILL)

R. E. Hill, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, reports a cometary
object (discovery observation below) with the 0.68-m Schmidt at the Catalina
Sky Survey; in 2-4-arcsec seeing and moonlight, there was a 4-5-arcsec
condensation and a coma 10-15-arcsec across, with no obvious tail. Four
coadded images obtained by E. C. Beshore with the Mt. Lemmon 1.5-m reflector
on Jan. 6.5 UT showed a very faint tail in p.a. 270 deg and perhaps 15" in
length. After the discovery had been added to the NEO Confirmation Page,
Y. Ikari (Moriyama, Japan, 0.26-m f/7.0 reflector, Jan. 6.6) reported a
0'.2 coma; P. Birtwhistle (Great Shefford, Berkshire, England, 0.40-m f/6.0
Schmidt-Cassegrain, Jan. 7.1) described a weak condensation offset to the
southeast of a 15" by 22" coma, with the brightest part of the coma 6" by 12"
extending in p.a. 50 and 230 deg; and H. Sato (RAS Observatory, Mayhill, NM,
U.S.A., 0.25-m f/3.4 reflector, Jan. 7.2) mentioned a 20" coma elongated
in p.a. 110 deg. On Jan. 7.2, Hill detected a short, fan-shaped tail,
20-30-arcsec long, in p.a. 270 deg.

COMET P/2010 A2 (LINEAR)

A comet reported by the LINEAR project (discovery observation below) and
placed on the NEO Confirmation Page has been reported as cometary by several
observers. On Jan. 7.0 UT, P. Birtwhistle (Great Shefford, Berkshire, England,
0.40-m f/6.0 Schmidt-Cassegrain) described a straight tail extending at least
130" in p.a. 280 deg but noted that the absence of an obvious central
condensation made measurement of the comet's position very difficult. On
Jan. 7.2, W. H. Ryan (Magdalena Ridge Observatory, 2.4-m f/8.9 reflector) also
remarked on the very distinct, bright tail in p.a. 280 deg and the difficulty
of identifying the center of the elongated condensation. At the same time,
H. Sato (RAS Observatory, Mayhill, NM, U.S.A., 0.25-m f/3.4 reflector)
likewise described the tail in p.a. 280 deg and noted the measurement
difficulty. On Jan. 7.3, E. C. Beshore (Mt. Lemmon Survey, 1.5-m reflector)
followed the tail out to nearly 4' (in p.a. 285 deg), while on Jan. 7.6
K. Kadota (Ageo, Japan, 0.25-m f/5.0 reflector) followed it out to 5'.

SUPERNOVA 2010B IN NGC 5370

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Masaki Tsuboi
(Asakita-ku, Hiroshima) of an apparent supernova (mag 14.4) on 30-s,
unfiltered CCD frames (limiting mag 17.7) taken around Jan. 7.730 UT using a
0.30-m f/5.3 reflector + unfiltered CCD. The new object, designated 2010B,
was measured by Tsuboi to be located at R.A. = 13h54m08s.7, Decl. =
+60d40'50".4 (equinox 2000.0), which is 5".1 west and 9".1 north of the
center of NGC 5370; Nakano measures position end figures 08s.82, 49".6 and
magnitude 14.1 from the discovery image (and 09s.49, 40".7 for the center of
the galaxy). Nothing is visible at this location on Tsuboi's past frames
taken on 2009 Sept. 6 and Nov. 21 UT (limiting mag 16.7) and on the Digitized
Sky Survey (DSS), and he reports mag 14.5 for 2010B on Jan. 8.661. Nakano
adds that K. Kadota (Ageo, Saitama-ken, Japan) has measured position end
figures 08s.74, 50".4 and mag 14.4 from an unfiltered CCD frame (limiting
magnitude 19.0) taken by K. Itagaki (Teppo-cho, Yamagata, Japan) on Jan. 8.64
using a 0.30-m f/7.8 reflector at the Takanezawa Station, Tochigi-ken, noting
that nothing is visible at this position on red and infrared DSS images from
1997. Kadota also co-added ten 60-s unfiltered CCD frames (limiting mag
18.9) on Jan. 8.757 with a 0.25-m f/5 reflector, yielding mag 14.5 and
position end figures 08s.77, 50".2.
Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage,
Veli-Pekka Hentunen (Varkaus, Finland) writes that he obtained four 150-s
unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 17.7) with a Celestron C14 XLT telescope
(+ Optec NextGen 0.5x focal reducer + SBIG ST 8 XME camera) on Jan. 8.72,
yielding mag 14.4 and position end figures 08s.81, 50".5; nothing is visible
at this position on a Palomar Sky Survey F plate (limiting red magnitude 20.8).

SUPERNOVA 2009mu IN ESO 374-3

M. Stritzinger, Las Campanas Observatory; G. Folatelli, Universidad de
Chile; and G. Pignata, Universidad Andres Bello, on behalf of the Millennium
Center for Supernova Science, report that they obtained an optical spectrum of
2009mu (cf. CBET 2091) on Jan. 6.1 UT with the Gemini (+ GMOS) telescope. The
spectrum reveals that 2009mu is a type-IIb supernova around a hundred days or
more past maximum.

SUPERNOVA 2010B IN NGC 5370

K. Kinugasa, H. Takahashi, S. Honda, H. Taguchi, and O. Hashimoto,
Gunma Astronomical Observatory (GAO), write that a low-resolution spectrum
(range 420-800 nm; resolution about 500) of 2010B (cf. CBET 2115), was
obtained on Jan. 9.7 UT with the GAO 1.5-m telescope (+ GLOWS). The spectrum
shows it to be a type-Ia supernova before maximum light. Adopting the NED
recession velocity of 3057 km/s for NGC 5370 (de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991,
Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, ver. 3.9), the expansion
velocity derived from the Si II absorption minimum (rest 635.5 nm) is about
10000 km/s. Comparison with a library of spectra via the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024)
indicates that 2010B is most similar to SN 2002bo at about four days before
maximum.

SUPERNOVA 2010B IN NGC 5370

J. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories; and R. Khan, Ohio State University,
report that optical spectra (range 390-740 nm; resolution 1.4 nm) of 2010B
(cf. CBET 2115) were obtained with the Hiltner 2.4-m telescope (+ CCDS) at
MDM Observatory on Jan. 9.47 UT. The spectrum shows that 2010B is a normal
type-Ia supernova at maximum light. After correcting for the recession
velocity of the host galaxy (NGC 5370, +3057 km/s; (de Vaucouleurs et al.
1991, Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, ver. 3; via NED) an
expansion velocity of 10800 km/s is measured from the absorption minimum of
the Si II 635.5-nm feature.

Further to CBET 2111, W. Li, S. B. Cenko, and A. V. Filippenko report
the LOSS discovery of two apparent supernovae on unfiltered KAIT images:

Additional KAIT magnitudes for 2010C in NGC 3428: a combined image from

SUPERNOVAE 2009mx AND 2009my

Rubab Khan, Ohio State University; and Jose Prieto, Carnegie
Observatories, report that optical spectra (range 390-740 nm; resolution 1.4
nm) of 2009mx and 2009my (cf. CBET 2095) were obtained with the Hiltner 2.4-m
telescope at MDM Observatory on Jan. 10.4 UT. Cross-correlation with a
library of supernova spectra using SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666,
1024) showS that the spectrum of 2009mx is most similar to the subluminous
type-Ia supernova 1991bg at a couple weeks after maximum, and the spectrum
of 2009my is of an old type-II supernova. After correcting the spectrum of
2009my for the recession velocity of its host galaxy (+3242 km/s; from de
Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, ver.
3), an expansion velocity of 7400 km/s is measured from the blue-shifted
absorption of the H-alpha profile.

SUPERNOVA 2010E IN ESO 13-G28

Ralph Martin, Perth Observatory, reports the discovery of an apparent
supernova (red mag about 17) in CCD images collected on 2009 Dec. 23.603 and
2010 Jan. 10.572 as part of the Perth Automated Supernova Search, using the
0.61-m Perth/Lowell telescope. The new object is located at R.A. =
2h02m32s.48, Decl. = -79d40'52".5 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty about 0".25
in each coordinate), which is approximately 1" east and 35" south of the
center of the galaxy ESO 13-G28. Nothing is visible at this position in an
image taken on 2009 Dec. 7.546 (limiting mag 19) or on the Digitized Sky
Survey.

SUPERNOVAE 2010C AND 2010D

J. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories; and R. Khan, Ohio State University,
report that optical spectra (range 390-740 nm; resolution 1.4 nm) of 2010C
and 2010D (cf. CBET 2119) were obtained with the Hiltner 2.4-m telescope at
MDM Observatory on Jan. 12.4 UT. The spectrum of 2010C shows a blue
continuum with narrow (FWHM about 900 km/s) hydrogen Balmer lines in emission,
as well as several Fe II lines and the N II 654.8-nm line in emission; the
spectrum resembles spectra of luminous-blue-variable outbursts, so-called
``supernova impostors" (e.g., SN 1997bs; van Dyk et al. 2000, PASP 112, 1532).
The spectrum of 2010D shows a blue continuum with broad Balmer lines
characteristic of a young type-II supernova.

M. Stritzinger, Las Campanas Observatory; G. Folatelli, Universidad de
Chile; and G. Pignata, Universidad Andres Bello, on behalf of the Millennium
Center for Supernova Science, report that they obtained an optical spectrum
of 2009nb (cf. CBET 2099) on Jan. 12.2 UT with the Gemini (+ GMOS) telescope.
The spectrum reveals that the object is a type-IIP supernova around a month
or more past explosion.

APPARENT NOVA IN M31: M31N 2010-01a

Williams, University of Arizona; D. H. Hartmann, Clemson University; J.
Rodriguez, Observatorio Astronomico de Mallorca (OAM); and S. Holmes, U.
Kolb, and R. Lucas, The Open University (TOU), report the discovery of an
apparent nova in M31 on two sets of ten 60-s stacked R-band CCD images
obtained with the robotic 60-cm telescope (+ E2V CCD camera) of the
Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System (Super-LOTIS, located at Steward
Observatory, Kitt Peak). The new object has steadily brightened, as
indicated by the following R-band magnitudes: Jan. 11.13 UT, 17.6; 12.092,
16.3; 13.094, 15.9. M31N 2010-01a is located at R.A. = 0h42m56s.73 +/-
0s.03, Decl. = +41d17'21".2 +/- 0".3 (equinox 2000.0), which is 140" east
and 73" north of the core of M31. M31N 2010-01a was also detected at red
mag 16.5 on eleven 120-s stacked unfiltered images obtained with the 0.35-m
f/11 TOU/OAM PIRATE Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (+ SBIG STL-1001E CCD
camera) at Costitx, Mallorca, on Jan. 11.77. (All magnitudes were derived
from a photometric solution using R magnitudes of the Local Group Survey M31
catalogue of Massey et al. 2006, A.J. 131, 2478.) No object is visible at
the position of M31N 2010-01a on a Super-LOTIS image from Jan. 9.09 UT
(limiting R magnitude 18.5).

Chapel Hill, on behalf of the CHASE project, report the discovery of an
apparent supernova (mag approximately 14.8 +/- 0.1) on an unfiltered image
taken on Jan. 13.26 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 3' telescope located at Cerro
Tololo. The new object, which was confirmed at mag approximately 14.7 on
Jan. 14.10, is located at R.A. = 10h05m21s.05 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -34o13'21".0
+/- 0".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 24".8 west and 9".1 south of the
center of the galaxy NGC 3120. Nothing is visible at this position on
archival images taken on Dec. 24.22 (limiting mag 18.0) and Nov. 14.31
(limiting mag 18.5). The type-II supernova 1999ca also appeared in this
galaxy (cf. IAUCs 7158, 7160, 7161).

University of Michigan; J. C. Wheeler, University of Texas; and G. H. Marion,
Texas A&M University and University of Texas, on behalf of the ROTSE
collaboration, report the discovery of a new supernova (mag about 19.4) in
unfiltered images taken on Jan. 9.46 UT with the 0.45-m ROTSE-IIIb telescope
at McDonald Observatory. The new object, which was observed again on Jan.
10.46 at mag 19.1 and on Jan. 13.39 at mag 19.5, is located at R.A. =
12h25m10s.01, Decl. = +45o19'43".9 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty about 1"),
which is 0".5 west and 1".5 south of the center of the host galaxy, SDSS
J122510.05+451945.3; a finding chart for the object can be found at website
URL http://www.rotse.net/rsvp/j122510.0+451 ... 451944.jpg.
A spectrum obtained on Jan. 12.3 with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope
(+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by S. C. Odewahn shows 2010G to be a
normal type-Ia supernova at maximum. According to SNID (Blondin and Tonry
2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), the spectrum best resembles that of SN 1998aq at one
day before maximum brighness, at a redshift of z = 0.115. The photometric
measurements are also consistent with a normal type-Ia supernova near
maximum at this redshift. The rest-frame photospheric velocity, estimated
from the minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm feature is about 10000 km/s.

M31N 2010-01a

Kamil Hornoch, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov; Jose Prieto, Carnegie
Observatories; Rubab Khan, Department of Astronomy, Ohio State University;
and Ondrej Pejcha, Department of Astronomy, Ohio State University, report
low-resolution optical spectroscopy (range 400-750 nm, resolution 1.4 nm)
and optical photometry of M31N 2010-01a (cf. CBET 2124). Spectra were
obtained using the Boller & Chivens CCD Spectrograph on the 2.4-m Hiltner
telescope at MDM Observatory; a spectrogram taken by Prieto and Khan on Jan.
13.08 UT (only 1.95 days after its first optical detection by Burwitz et al.)
exhibits a blue continuum with H-alpha, H-beta and Fe II lines with prominent
P-Cyg profiles. The FWZI of the emission component of H-alpha is about 2500
km/s. This suggests that the object is an "Fe II"-class nova in its early
stages of evolution. Sloan magnitudes were measured by Hornoch from images
taken by Prieto and Khan with RETROCAM on the 2.4-m Hiltner telescope:
Jan. 13.106, g' = 16.15 +/- 0.08; 13.110, r' = 15.94 +/- 0.04. In addition,
they obtained (from a co-added 300-s Sloan r' image) the following position
for 2010-01a: R.A. = 0h42m56s.73, Decl. = +41d17'21".2 (equinox 2000.0;
offset from the center of M31: 140" east, and 73" north), in agreement with
the position on CBET 2124; Hornoch adds that nothing is present at this
position down to R = 21.3 on a co-added 1560-s R-band CCD frame taken during
software tests by P. Kubanek, J. Gorosabel, P. Martorell, and M. Jelinek with
the 1.23-m telescope at Calar Alto on 2010 Jan. 2.799 UT.
