on behalf of the CHASE project, report the discovery of an apparent supernova
(mag approximately 17.1 +/- 0.3) on an unfiltered image taken on Apr. 29.01
UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 4' telescope located at Cerro Tololo. The new
object, which is also present at mag approximately 17.2 in an image taken on
Apr. 29.99, is located at R.A. = 9h50m12s.32 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -12o03'09".2
+/- 0".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 24".0 west and 18".4 north of the
center of the galaxy MCG -02-25-20. Nothing is visible at this position on
archival images taken on Mar. 29.09 (limiting mag 18.0) and Feb. 4.13
(limiting mag 18.5).

APPARENT NOVA IN M31: M31N 2010-04a

Koichi Nishiyama (Kurume, Japan) and Fujio Kabashima (Miyaki, Japan)
report the discovery of an apparent nova (mag 16.5) in M31 on seven 40-s
unfiltered CCD frames (limiting magnitude 17.8) taken around Apr. 29.815 UT
using a Meade 200R 0.40-m f/9.8 reflector (+ SBIG STL1001E camera). The new
object, which was confirmed at mag 17.1 on five 60-s unfiltered CCD frames
(limiting mag 18.7) taken on May 1.809, is located at R.A. = 0h42m44s.75 +/-
0s.01, Decl. = +41d15'11".9 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is 5" east and
57" south of the center of the galaxy M31. Nothing is visible at this
position on their past frames taken on 2010 Feb. 23.432 UT (limiting mag 19.0)
and Feb. 28.426 (limiting mag 18.6) or on a Digitized Sky Survey plate from
1986 Nov. 27 (limiting red mag 18.7).

SUPERNOVA 2010cm IN PGC 5597
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

G. Bock, Windaroo, Queensland, Australia, reports the discovery by
Stuart Parker, Oxford, Canterbury, New Zealand, of an apparent supernova
(red mag 16.3) on a 35-s unfiltered image taken on May 3.756 UT using a
35-cm Celestron C14 f/6.3 reflector (+ ST10 CCD camera). An image
(limiting red mag 17.8) taken by Parker on May 4.725 shows the new object at
mag 16.1. SN 2010cm is located at R.A. = 1h30m03s.91, Decl. = -42d41'10".6
(equinox 2000.0), which is 15" west and 1" south of the nucleus of the galaxy
PGC 5597 (= ESO 244-G31); the astrometry and photometry measurements were
by Bock. Nothing is visible at this position on Digitized Sky Survey
red and infrared images (limiting red magnitude 19 or fainter), on an
image taken by Parker on 2010 Apr. 2, or on an image taken by P. Marples
(Loganholme, Queensland) on 2009 Oct. 16 (limiting red mag 17.5).
The type-II supernovae 2005Q (IAUC 8473) and 2005me (IAUC 8647) also
appeared in this galaxy.

4.98, is located at R.A. = 11h04m06s.57 +/- 0".1, Decl. = +4o49'58".7 +/-
0".1 (equinox 2000.0). Nothing is visible at this position on archival
images taken on Apr. 4.13 (limiting mag 17.5) and (in a stack of five 40-s
images) on Mar. 25.01 (limiting mag 18.7). The surface brightness of the
presumed host galaxy has no clear galaxy core.

SUPERNOVA 2010cn

G. H. Marion, Texas A&M University and University of Texas; J. Vinko,
University of Szeged; and J. C. Wheeler, University of Texas, report that a
spectrogram (range 430-1000 nm) of 2010cn (cf. CBET 2269), obtained on May
6.18 UT with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution
Spectrograph) by M. Shetrone, shows three broad, shallow features (at 484.6,
568.8, and 630.5 nm) superimposed on a blue continuum. The redshift,
estimated from a narrow H-alpha emission line from the host galaxy, is 0.026.
From the SuperNova IDentification code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666,
1024), the best-matching template is that of SN 2006aj, a broad-line type-Ic
supernova, at five days before maximum light. Comparison with a library of
supernovae spectra via the GELATO code (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488,
383) yields SN 1993J, a type-IIb supernova when close to maximum light, as
the best-resembling spectrum.

SUPERNOVA 2010co IN NGC 6862

L. A. G. Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports his discovery of an
apparent supernova (magnitude 16.1) on unfiltered CCD images taken on
May 6.105 and 6.952 UT at his Bronberg Observatory. The new object,
designated 2010co, is located at R.A. = 20h08m54s.92, Decl. = -56d23'40".8
(equinox 2000.0), which is 1" east and 9" south of the core of the nearby
type-SBb galaxy NGC 6862. Nothing is visible at this position in Digitized
Sky Survey images (limiting red mag 20.5) or on the previous image of this
galaxy taken at the Bronberg Observatory on Apr. 13.144 (limiting mag 18.5).

SUPERNOVAE 2010bs AND 2010cn

J. M. Silverman, M. T. Kandrashoff, and A. V. Filippenko, University of
California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a CCD spectrum (range 340-1000
nm), obtained on May 7 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast) at Lick
Observatory, shows that 2010bs (CBET 2247) is a type-II supernova whose
H-alpha emission greatly dominates over the absorption component. Cross-
correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova
IDentification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024)
indicates that 2010bs is about 3 weeks past maximum light. SN 2010cn (CBET
2269) is likely a type-IIb supernova, in agreement with the findings of
Marion et al. (CBET 2270); the object is confirmed to be at a redshift of
0.026. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using SNID
indicates that 2010cn is near maximum light.

POSSIBLE NOVA OR NEW CATACLYSMIC VARIABLE IN PEGASUS

On May 7.4 UT, Dae-Am Yi, Yeongwol-kun, Gangwon-do, Korea, reported (via
H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University) the detection of an apparent new object
(mag about 10.8) on two images taken on May 6.77 with a Canon 5D digital
camera (+ 93-mm camera lens). Yi confirmed the object with a 400-mm lens
on May 7.76, when the object had brightened to mag about 8.4. The
confirmation image suggests that the brightened object is positionally
coincident with the GSC star 2197:886, whose catalogued position in GSC
version 2.3 is R.A. = 21h38m06s.571, Decl. = +26d19'57".33 (equinox 2000.0),
with magnitudes F = 13.88 and j = 14.57. Yamaoka notes that the Digitized
Sky Survey image of GSC 2197:866 is elongated toward the north-south,
indicating that it is a double/multiple star. Precise astrometry is
strongly needed of Yi's object. Yamaoka also notes that there is a bright
x-ray source (1RXS J213807.1+261958) near the position, which suggests that
the brightened object may be a cataclysmic variable star (classical nova,
dwarf nova, etc.).

CATACLYSMIC VARIABLE IN PEGASUS

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the independent discovery of the
outburst of this variable (cf. CBET 2273) by Shizuo Kaneko (Kami-Yashiki,
Kakegawa, Shizuoka-ken) at mag 9.0 on two 20-s exposures (limiting mag 12.4)
taken on May 7.787 UT with a Contax 80-mm f/2.0 camera lens (+ Canon Kiss
Digital X camera); nothing was visible at this position on a frame taken
by Kaneko on May 1.742 with the same instrumentation. From Kaneko's
discovery frame, Nakano measures mag 9.1 (limiting mag 13.2) and the
following position for the variable: R.A. = 21h38m07s.03, Decl. =
+26d20'03".0 (equinox 2000.0; probable error +/- 4"), adding that a faint
star of mag around 14 is visible at position end figures 11s.5, 01".
H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University, reports that the variable appears at
mag about 15 (near the limiting magnitude) on a CCD survey image taken
by K. Itagaki (Yamagata, Japan) on May 1.71 UT with a 0.21-m telescope,
which suggests that the star was then at a quiesient phase; Itagaki
provides position end figures 06s.66, 19'57".1 and mag about 8.8 from an
image taken on May 8.657 UT with his 0.60-m telescope, indicating that
the outbursting object is a southern component of a double star GSC
2197:866 (cf. CBET 2273).
A. Henden, AAVSO, notes that Palomar Sky Survey (POSS) plates show a
close pair of objects at the location of the outbursting variable: one is
essentially stationary, while the other has a relatively high proper motion.
On the POSS-I plates, the southwest component of the 3"-separated double is
obviously blue, while on the POSS-II plates, it has moved east-northeast by
about 3" and is now about 1" southeast of the stationary northeast component.
At this motion rate, it would be expected to lie an arcsec or two east of the
stationary component at this epoch. This rate of motion would imply
something intrinsically faint but relatively close; adding in the color
would imply a white dwarf -- suggesting that the moving object is the
outbursting object and that it is a cataclysmic variable with an amplitude
of about 6 magnitudes.
P. Camilleri, Sydney, Australia, obtained two unfiltered CCD images of
the variable remotely at the Tzec Maun Observatory in New Mexico using a
Takahashi Epsilon 0.18-m f/2.8 corrected Newtonian reflector (May 8.371 UT,
mag 9.3) and a 0.35-m Maksutov-Newtonian f/3.8 reflector (May 8.388, mag 8.9),
yielding position end figures 06s.64 +/- 0s.02, 19'56".8 +/- 0".1.

Observatory, National Research Council of Canada, report that a spectrum
(range 390-703 nm, resolution 0.3 nm) of this variable (cf. CBET 2273),
obtained on May 8.47 UT with the 1.82-m Plaskett Telescope of the National
Research Council of Canada, shows strong H-alpha and H-beta in emission
(HWFM 800 km/s), as well as He II (468.6 nm) and a broad emission feature
centered at 465 nm that is interpreted as the Bowen complex of N III, C III,
and C IV. All members of the Balmer series show shell-like profiles with
both red and blue absorption components.
A. Arai, Kyoto Sangyo University, reports that an optical spectrogram
(resolution 500) of the variable was obtained using the 1.3-m ARAKI telescope
on May 15.77 UT under poor sky conditions. The spectrum shows a blue
continuum and a weak H-alpha emission line (EW about 0.4 nm), suggesting
that the object would be classified as a dwarf nova. No other significant
emission or absorption lines were seen in the low-S/N data.

R.A. = 13h00m25s.79, Decl. = -15d17'19".8 (equinox 2000.0), which is 8" west
and 19" south of the center of NGC 4877. Nothing is visible at this position
on Itagaki's images from 2007 Feb. 25.708 (limiting mag 18.5) and 2010 May
1.633 (limiting mag 17.5) or on the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS). Itagaki's
discovery frame has been posted at http://www.k-itagaki.jp/images/psn4877.jpg.
T. Yusa, Osaki, Japan, reports his confirming unfiltered CCD images of 2010cp
at mag 16.8 on May 10.145 (0.25-m f/3.4 reflector + SBIG ST-10XME camera,
GRAS Observatory near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A.; limiting mag 19.5) and on May
11.388 (0.41-m f/8.4 reflector + SBIG ST-1001E camera, GRAS Observatory,
Moorook, Australia; limiting mag 19.0), measuring position end figures
25s.82 +/- 0s.01, 19".8 +/- 0".1; nothing was visible at this position on
DSS images from 1983 May 10 and 1997 June 2 (red).

E. Y. Hsiao, N. Suzuki, AND P. E. Nugent, Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory; Janos Botyanszki and Joshua Meyers, University of California,
Berkeley; and D. D. Balam, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, National
Research Council of Canada (NRCC), report that inspection of a low-signal-
to-noise-ratio CCD spectrum (range 330-980 nm), obtained on May 8.46 UT with
the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2010ck (cf.
CBET 2263) is a type-II supernova. The spectrum was taken nearly two weeks
past the discovery date. The supernova sustained the initially reported
brightness -- measured to have a magnitude V = 16.77 and color B-V = +0.70
on May 11.33 UT with the 1.82-m Plaskett Telescope of the NRCC. The
"superfit" software of Howell et al. (2005, Ap.J. 634, 1190) identified the
spectrum as that of a young type-II supernova at z = 0.027, which matches
the redshift of the reported host galaxy, MCG +06-31-61. The spectrum
closely resembles that of SN 1999em, with the H-alpha and H-beta features
visible but still weak.

G. Folatelli, Universidad de Chile; and M. Stritzinger, Carnegie
Observatories, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project and the
Millennium Center for Supernova Science, report that a spectrum (range
390-812 nm) of supernova 2010cn (cf. CBETs 2269, 2270, 2272), obtained with
the Gemini South Telescope (+ GMOS) on May 8.1 UT, reveals it to be most
similar to the type-Ib supernova 2008D (cf. CBETs 1202, 1205, 1222).
The spectrum consists of a blue continuum with broad absorption features.
Reddening the spectrum by E(B-V) = 0.8 mag shows that it is similar to SN
2008D at six days after explosion (Malesani et al. 2009, Ap.J. 692, L84).
Nevertheless, at the present time, 2010cn does not exhibit prevalent
absorption related to Fe II multiplet 42 (rest 492.4, 501.8, and 516.9 nm).
Emission lines from the host galaxy of 2010cn confirm the redshift of 0.026
given on previous CBETs. Based on this redshift, an absorption at about
630 nm would imply an expansion velocity of 18000 km/s if the line is
attributed to H-alpha; if attributed to the Si II 635.5-nm doublet, then the
velocity would be around 9000 km/s. Another absorption observed at 570 nm
yields a velocity of 15000 km/s if attributed to He I 587.6-nm.

NM, U.S.A.). The host galaxy (2MASS Flat Galaxy Catalogue number 15924)
has redshift z = 0.0275 (6dF Galaxy Survey; cf. Jones et al. 2004, MNRAS 355,
747).

SUPERNOVA 2010cr IN NGC 5177

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Koichi Itagaki
(Teppo-cho, Yamagata) of an apparent supernova (mag 17.0) on unfiltered CCD
frames (limiting magnitude 19.0) taken on May 15.61 UT using a 0.60-m f/5.7
reflector (+ Bitran BT-214E camera). The new object, which was also found at
mag 16.3 by Itagaki on an unfiltered pre-discovery frame taken on May 1.65
with a 0.50-m f/6 reflector, is located at R.A. = 13h29m25s.03 +/- 0s.01,
Decl. = +11d47'46".4 (equinox 2000.0), which is 11" east and 3" south of the
center of NGC 5177. Nothing is visible at this position on Itagaki's many
past frames (including on 2007 Mar. 17.66, limiting mag 19.0) or on the
Digitized Sky Survey; his pre-discovery and discovery images are posted at
website URL http://www.k-itagaki.jp/images/psn5177.jpg.
D. Bishop, Rochester, NY, writes that this object was independently
discovered (presumably at Palomar) on Apr. 16 at R = 18.0 (not visible on
Apr. 11, to limiting mag 20.9) and posted at the following website URL:

P. Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf
of the CfA Supernova Group, reports that spectroscopic observations of 2010cp
(cf. CBET 2276), obtained on May 15 UT by M. Kilic with the F. L. Whipple
Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows it to be a type-Ia supernova.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024)
indicates that 2010cp is a subluminous type-Ia supernova at a few days past
maximum light.

CATACLYSMIC VARIABLE IN PEGASUS

G. Tovmassian, D. Clark, and S. Zharikov, Instituto de Astronomia,
Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, conducted 2.5 hours of
spectrophotometry of the object announced on CBET 2273 (see also CBETs
2275 and 2277) -- starting on May 10.4 UT, with the 2.1-m telescope (+
Boller & Chivens spectrograph; 1200 lines/mm grating; resolution FWHM 0.13
nm, range 370-500 nm). The spectra show broad absorption lines of H and He,
with small central emission in the cores of the lines, typical of the
spectra of dwarf novae at the plateau of outburst. The central emission
peak increases in strength towards H_beta of the Balmer series but is
strongest in the He II line. The Bowen complex of N III, C III, and C IV
is also visible in emission. Measurements of radial velocities of the
lines confirm the binary nature of the object. The period determination is
very rough at 82 +/- 5 minutes, based on only 25 spectra obtained with 60-s
exposure times and covering continuously about one full orbital period.
The deduced period confirms the dwarf-nova nature of the object and argues
strongly in favor of a WZ Sge classification -- as such objects are known
to undergo super-outbursts with amplitude of approximately 8 magnitudes.
