SUPERNOVA 2010ew

M. Peoples, J. Newton, and T. Puckett report the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag 16.6) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 18.5) taken with
a 0.40-m reflector at Portal, AZ, U.S.A., on June 28.39 UT in the course of
the Puckett Observatory Supernova Search. The new object, which was confirmed
at mag 16.6 on images (limiting mag 19.8) taken by P. Mortfield and S.
Cancelli on June 29.48 with a 0.40-m reflector at Sierra Remote Observatories
in California, is located at R.A. = 18h37m11s.88, Decl. = +30o37'49".6
(equinox 2000.0), which is 4".6 west and 7".1 north of the center of the
presumed host galaxy. Nothing is visible at this position on images taken by
Puckett on June 13 (limiting mag 19.1); however, T. Orff reports a precovery
image (limiting magnitude of 18.5) taken by Puckett on June 20, which shows
2010ew at mag 17.1.

SUPERNOVA 2010ev IN NGC 3244

M. Stritzinger, Las Campanas Observatory and Dark Cosmology Centre,
on behalf of the Millennium Center for Supernova Science, reports that he
obtained an optical spectrum of supernova 2010ev (cf. CBET 2344) on June 30.9
UT with the Gemini South (+ GMOS) telescope. The spectrum reveals that 2010ev
is a young type-Ia supernova. Comparison with a library of supernova spectra
(Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) suggests that this object is most
similar to the normal supernovae 1992A and 2004eo several days or more before
maximum light.

superseded by text appearing later in the printed IAU Circulars.

APPARENT NOVA IN M31: M31N 2010-06d

W. Pietsch, M. Henze, and V. Burwitz, Max-Planck-Institut fuer
Extraterrestrische Physik; A. Liakos, Department of Physics, University of
Athens; D. Hatzidimitriou, Department of Physics, University of Crete; and
P. Niarchos, Department of Physics, University of Athens, report the detection
of an apparent nova in M31 using observations with the UltraViolet/Optical
Telescope (UVOT) onboard the Swift satellite. The object was serendipitously
detected in the UVW1 filter (range 181-321 nm; UVOT observation number
31255018 with 4333-s exposure) starting on June 24.02 UT with a magnitude of
19.5 +/- 0.2. The position for the nova candidate, designated M31N 2010-06d,
is R.A. = 0h42m55s.56, Decl. = +41d19'25".5 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty
1".0), which is 127" east and 197" north of the core of M31. The source is
clearly detected in the individual images. In the UVW1 filter, Swift
observation number 31255014, starting on June 12.04 (4161-s exposure), and in
the U filter, Swift observation number 31255017, starting on June 21.29
(1330-s exposure), no object was detected at the position of M31N 2010-06d,
with limiting magnitudes of 20.5 and 19.7 (3 sigma), respectively. (All
magnitudes are on the UVOT photometric system of Poole et al. 2008, MNRAS
383, 627, and have not been corrected for extinction.) M31N 2010-06d was
confirmed on a stacked unfiltered CCD image composed of ten 60-s frames
obtained at a 40-cm Cassegrain telescope with a focal reducer (f/5.1)
equipped with a 2184x1472-pixel ST-10XME CCD camera (pixel size 6.8 microns
square) at the Athens University Observatory on July 1.082 UT, yielding
magnitude 17.8 (obtained from a photometric solution using R magnitudes of
the Local Group Survey M31 catalogue of Massey et al. 2006) and position
end figures 55s.62, 25".7 (uncertainty 0".5), fully consistent with the
position of the Swift source. M31N 2010-06d is visible in the UV filter
already several days before the detection in the optical (similar to novae
M31N 2009-08a and M31N 2010-01b). Public data from the Swift data archive
was used.

Kamil Hornoch, Ondrejov Observatory, reports the independent discovery of
M31N 2010-06d by Marek Wolf and himself on co-added 1620-s and co-added 1350-s
R-band CCD frames taken by Hornoch on June 30.003 UT and by Wolf on July 1.022,
respectively, with the 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov. M31N 2010-06d is
marginally visible on single images used for the co-added frames. Also, the
new object is visible on pre-discovery co-added R-band frames taken with the
same instrumentation during three previous nights, but is not present on
numerous archive images taken at Ondrejov. M31N 2010-06d is located at R.A. =
0h42m55s.53, Decl. = +41o19'25".0 (equinox 2000.0), which is 126" east and 196"
north of the center of M31. Available R-band magnitudes for M31N 2010-06d,
measured by Hornoch: June 9.459 UT, [21.7 (P. Garnavich, C. Littlefield, N.
Paul, and S. Bouzid, 1.83-m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope); 18.152,
[21.1 (P. Kubanek, J. Gorosabel, O. L. Gil, and M. Jelinek, 1.23-m telescope
at Calar Alto); 27.034, 20.1 +/- 0.3 (K. Hornoch, 0.65-m telescope at
Ondrejov); 28.014, 19.7 +/- 0.2 (Hornoch and P. Hornochova, 0.65-m telescope
at Ondrejov); 28.040, 19.7 +/- 0.2 (Hornoch and Hornochova); 29.022, 19.2 +/-
0.2 (P. Zasche, 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov); 29.034, 19.0 +/- 0.2 (Zasche);
30.003, 18.6 +/- 0.15 (Hornoch); 30.022, 18.65 +/- 0.1 (Hornoch); July 1.022,
18.3 +/- 0.1 (M. Wolf, 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov).

Burgett, J. Heasley, W. Sweeney, C. Waters, and H. Flewelling, IfA, report the
discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of 22 moderate-redshift supernovae
found in the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey. All spectra (range 344-866 nm)
were obtained using the Blue Channel spectrograph on the 6.5-m MMT between
June 16 and 18 UT. These observations are part of a large program for PS1
transients classification at the MMT. Below are tabulated the discovery data
(including magnitudes in bandpasses r and i), the spectral type, the redshift
(z), and the last three characters of the PS1 designation (which are all
prefixed by 'PS1-1000'). The spectroscopic identifications were performed by
cross-correlating with a library of supernova-spectra templates using the SNID
code of Blondin and Tonry (2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024). Redshifts were determined
from the host galaxies where possible (and then given to 0.001) or from SNID
(and then given to 0.01).

SUPERNOVA 2010ex IN PGC 70222

G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and University
of Texas; J. Vinko and R. Boros, University of Szeged; and J. C. Wheeler,
University of Texas, report that a spectrum (range 430-1000 nm) of 2010ex
(cf. CBET 2348), obtained on July 5.3 UT with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly
Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by S. C. Odewahn, shows
prominent Si II, S II, Ca II, and Fe II features, characteristic of a type-Ia
supernova before maximum brightness. The Ca II infrared triplet has a
shallow, but clearly visible, high-velocity component, also suggesting a
pre-maximum phase. According to SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666,
1024), the spectrum is most similar to template spectra from normal type-Ia
supernova at a few days before maximum. The redshift, estimated from a narrow
H-alpha emission feature from the host galaxy (PGC 70222), is 0.0224, in
agreement with the NED value of 0.0228 from Saintonge et al. (2008, A.J. 135,
588). The expansion velocity, obtained from the Si II 635.5-nm feature, is
about 10500 km/s.

SUPERNOVA 2010fw IN UGC 10995

J. M. Silverman, I. K. W. Kleiser, C. V. Griffith, and A. V. Filippenko,
University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a CCD spectrum
(range 340-1000 nm), obtained on July 7 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+
Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2010fw (CBET 2351) is a type-II
supernova. After removal of the host-galaxy recession velocity of 8100 km/s,
determined by narrow emission lines, it is found that the absorption minimum
of the H-alpha line, which is greatly dominated by the emission component, is
blueshifted by about 10000 km/s. Cross-correlation with a library of
supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification" code (SNID; Blondin
and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2010fw is most similar to the
type-II supernova 2004et at maximum light.

SUPERNOVA 2010ey IN ESO 548-76

N. Morrell, Las Campanas Observatory, Carnegie Supernova Project; J.
Prieto, Carnegie Observatories; and I. Botti, Universidad de Chile, write
that on July 7.4 UT they obtained an optical spectrum (range 387-920 nm) of
2010ey (cf. CBET 2349) at Las Campanas Observatory, using the 2.5-m du Pont
telescope (+ WFCCD), which reveals that 2010ey is an evolved type-Ia supernova.
Assuming for the host galaxy the NED recession velocity of 1488 km/s (Wegner
et al. 2003, A.J. 126, 2268), cross-correlation with a library of supernova
spectra via the Supernova Identification tool (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J.
666, 1024) shows that 2010ey is a normal type-Ia supernova several months
after maximum brightness, best matching the spectrum of SN 2003du at 139 days

SUPERNOVAE 2010ew AND 2010fx

G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on
behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, reports on spectroscopic observations that
were obtained of 2010ew and 2010fx by M. Calkins on July 7 UT with the F. L.
Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST; range 360-760 nm).
Classifications were made by cross-correlation with a library of supernova
spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry
2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024). SN 2010ew (cf. CBET 2345) is a normal type-Ia
supernova about five days after maximum brightness, and 2010fx (cf. CBET 2352)
is a type-IIP supernova several days post maximum.

2010 JUNE BOOTID METEORS

P. Jenniskens, SETI Institute, reports that elevated rates of the June
Bootid meteors (IAU Shower 170) were predicted for 2010 June 23-24 in
calculations by J. Vaubaillon and P. Jenniskens (Jenniskens 2006, *Meteor
Showers and Their Parent Comets*, Cambridge University Press, p. 674), when
the earth was calculated to cross the 1836, 1830, 1825, and 1819 dust ejecta
of comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke at June 23d22h40m, 24d00h07m, 24d01h22m, and
24d03h53m UTC, respectively. A 94-percent-lit moon in Sco made for poor
observing conditions. Subsequently, several observers have reported
significant June Bootid activity in low-light-level video observations,
lasting from about June 23d22h until June 24d06h UT. Rates peaked at a
zenith hourly rate of 5 +/- 2 meteors/hr. Javor Kac, Slovenia, observed
nine June Bootids and eight sporadic meteors in five hours of observing time
during June 23.9-24.1. That same night, Enrico Stomeo, Italy, recorded
fifteen June Bootids among 97 meteors total with three cameras (stellar
limiting magnitude 3.8) during 6.2, 5.1, and 6.2 hours of observing,
respectively; video magnitudes were in the range -1.4 to +2.6. Michel
Vandeputte observed visually from Frasnes, Belgium, and detected three June
Bootids during June 23d23h45m-24d01h20m UT. Paul Martsching at McFarland
Park, IA, USA, saw five June Bootids and seven sporadic meteors under moonlit
skies between June 24d03h15m and 05h45m UT (stellar limiting magitude 4.9).

APPARENT NOVA IN M31: M31N 2010-07a

Kamil Hornoch, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov; and Petr Zasche,
Astronomical Institute, Charles University, Prague, report their discovery
of an apparent nova in the galaxy M31 on a co-added 2160-s R-band CCD frame
taken by Zasche on July 8.060 UT with the 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov. The
new object is well visible on single images used for the co-added frame and
faintly visible on a pre-discovery co-added R-band CCD frame taken by Hornoch
with the same instrumentation on July 7.036 UT, but it is not present on
numerous archive images taken at Lelekovice and Ondrejov. M31N 2010-07a is
located at R.A. = 0h43m20s.13, Decl. = +41o21'23".7 (equinox 2000.0), which
is 403" east and 315" north of the center of M31. Available R-band magnitudes
for M31N 2010-07a, as measured by Hornoch: July 4.005 UT, [21.1 (K. Hornoch,
0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov); 4.956, [20.9 (Hornoch); 7.036, 20.2 +/- 0.3
(Hornoch); 8.060, 18.25 +/- 0.1 (P. Zasche, 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov).

M. Henze, Max-Planck-Institut fuer Extraterrestrische Physik, (MPE);
V. Burwitz, MPE and Observatorio Astronomico de Mallorca (OAM); W. Pietsch,
MPE; J. Rodriguez, OAM; and C. A. Haswell, S. Holmes, U. Kolb, and R. Lucas,
The Open University (TOU), confirm M31N 2010-07a after being notified by
Hornoch. The new object is visible at a corresponding R magnitude of 18.4
on two stacks of five 120-s unfiltered CCD images obtained with the TOU/OAM
PIRATE 0.35-m f/11 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (+ SBIG STL-1001E CCD camera)
at Costitx, Mallorca, Spain, on July 8.02 and 8.07 UT, with position end
figures 20s.11, 23".7 (uncertainty 0".3), which is 403" east and 314" north
of the core of M31. No object is visible at this position on a PIRATE image
from June 26.08 (limiting R magnitude 19.0). M31N 2010-07a was already
active during an observation with the UltraViolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT)
onboard the Swift satellite one day before the optical discovery. The 3815-s
UVW1-filter observation (range 181-321 nm) starting on July 7.07 UT shows
M31N 2010-07a at mag 20.6 +/- 0.3 at a position consistent with the
coordinates of the optical source; no source is visible at this position
in an earlier UVW1-filter observation starting on June 24.02 (limiting
magnitude 21.0). The optical magnitudes were obtained from a photometric
solution using R magnitudes of the Local Group Survey M31 catalogue (Massey
et al. 2006, A.J. 131, 2478); the ultraviolet magnitudes are on the UVOT
photometric system (Poole et al. 2008, MNRAS 383, 627) and have not been
corrected for extinction. The Swift team is thanked for scheduling the
Target-of-Opportunity observations.

SUPERNOVA 2010fy

L. A. G. Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports his discovery of an
apparent supernova (magnitude approximately 17.7) on several unfiltered CCD
images taken on July 7.163 UT at the Bronberg Observatory. The new object,
which was confirmed at mag approximately 17.1 on July 9.152, is located at
R.A. = 5h24m52s.46, Decl. = -46d46'37".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is 9" east
and 9" north of the core of the presumed host galaxy. Nothing is visible at
this position on Digitized Sky Survey images (limiting red mag 20.5) or on
Monard's image of this galaxy taken on 2010 Apr. 22.719 (limiting mag 18.5)
or on earlier Monard images.

SUPERNOVAE 2010ej AND 2010em

J. M. Silverman, S. B. Cenko, D. Perley, A. Cucchiara, J. S. Bloom,
and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that
inspection of CCD spectra (range 350-1000 nm), obtained on July 7 UT
with the 10-m Keck I telescope (+ LRIS), shows that 2010ej (CBET 2329) is a
type-II supernova. After removal of the host-galaxy recession velocity of
15700 km/s, determined by narrow emission lines, it is found that the
absorption minimum of the H-alpha line is blueshifted by about 13000 km/s.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova
IDentification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024)
indicates that 2010ej is possibly a type-IIb supernova near maximum brightness
(which means that the supernova was discovered shortly after explosion).
SN 2010em (CBET 2335) is also a type-II supernova; after removal of the
host-galaxy recession velocity of 8300 km/s, determined by narrow emission
lines, it is found that the absorption minimum of the H-alpha line is
blueshifted by about 7500 km/s. SNID indicates that 2010em is 1 to 2 months
past maximum brightness.

SUPERNOVA 2010fz IN NGC 2967

L. A. G. Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports his discovery of an
apparent supernova (mag approximately 15.8) on several unfiltered CCD images
taken on July 9.693 UT at the Bronberg Observatory. The new object, which
was confirmed at magnitude 15.4 on images taken by Monard on July 10.686, is
located at R.A. = 9h42m04s.77, Decl. = +0d19'51".0 (equinox 2000.0), which is
22" east and 21" south of the galaxy core of the nearby Sc-type galaxy NGC
2967. Nothing is seen at this position in Digitized Sky Survey images
(limiting red mag 20.5) or on the previous image of this galaxy taken at the
Bronberg Observatory on 2010 June 13.678 (limiting mag 18.5) or on earlier
images by Monard.

SUPERNOVA 2010fy

J. L. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories; and L. A. G. Monard, Pretoria, S.
Africa, report that they obtained on July 9.4 UT an optical spectrum (range
370-920 nm; resolution 0.7 nm) of 2010fy (cf. CBET 2359) with WFCCD mounted
on the du Pont 2.5-m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. The spectrum
shows that 2010fy is a type-Ia supernova at maximum light. Cross-correlation
with a library of supernova spectra using SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J.
666, 1024) shows that 2010fy is most similar to the normal type-Ia supernova
1990N at 3 days after maximum light. The redshift obtained by SNID from the
supernova features is z = 0.049 +/- 0.004.

SUPERNOVA 2010ga

Jan Vales, Crni Vrh Observatory, reports the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag 17.3) in four unfiltered CCD images taken on July 8.92-8.96 UT
with the 60-cm f/3.3 Cichocki reflector in the course of the Comet and
Asteroid Search Program (PIKA) at the Crni Vrh Observatory. The new object
is located at R.A. = 0h34m43s.83, Decl. = +9o54'36".1 (equinox 2000.0),
which is 17" east and 2" south of the nucleus of the galaxy designated 2MASX
J00344266+0954382. Nothing is visible at this position on archival PIKA
images obtained on 2008 Oct. 20.04 (limiting magnitude 18.0) or on a Palomar
Sky Survey F plate from 1990 Oct. 14 (via the Digitized Sky Survey/Aladin).
Jure Skvarc, Crni Vrh Observatory, reports that a confirmation image of 2010ga
was obtained by S. Maticic at Crni Vrh Observatory on July 10.03 using a
photometric R filter, from which Skvarc measured R = 18.19 +/- 0.03.
Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage,
Vitali Nevski (Vitebsk, Belarus) reports that he obtained unfiltered CCD
images of 2010ga on July 9.958 with a 0.3-m reflector, yielding mag 17.7 and
position end figures 43s.82, 36".4 (USNO-B1.0 catalogue), adding that nothing
is visible at this position on a Palomar Sky Survey DSS image obtained on
1990 Oct. 14 (via the Digitized Sky Survey; limiting red mag 21).

SUPERNOVAE 2010fz AND 2010ga

J. L. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories; N. Morrell and O. Duhalde, Las
Campanas Observatory; and L. A. G. Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, report
that they obtained optical spectra (range 380-920 nm; resolution 0.7nm) of
2010fz (cf. CBET 2361) and 2010ga (cf. CBET 2363) on July 11 UT with WFCCD
mounted on the du Pont 2.5-m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. The
spectrum of 2010fz shows characteristics of a young, reddened, type-Ia
supernova at 1-2 weeks before maximum. After correcting for the recession
velocity of its host galaxy (NGC 2967) of 1892 km/s (H I Parkes All-Sky
Survey Final Catalog; Wong et al. 2006, MNRAS 371, 1855), a blueshift of the
Si II (rest 635.5 nm) line is measured to be 13000 km/s. Strong Na I D
absorption is detected from the interstellar medium of our Galaxy (EW =
0.10 nm) and the host galaxy (EW = 0.13 nm), indicative of extinction in the
line-of-sight.
SN 2010ga is a type-Ia supernova a few days after maximum light. The
redshift of the host galaxy (2MASX J00344266+0954382) is measured to be z =
0.057 from the wavelength of H-alpha in emission (observed wavelength 694.1
nm). Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using SNID
(Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that 2010ga is most similar
to SN 1991T at 11 days after maximum light. Other 1991T-like spectral
templates give good cross-correlation fits at a similar age. The redshift
obtained by SNID from the cross-correlation, z = 0.056, is fully consistent
with the host-galaxy redshift.
