SUPERNOVA 2010gv

Further to CBETs 2404 and 2408, D. Balam and E. Chisholm, National
Research Council of Canada, obtained CCD images of 2010gv on Aug. 13.33 UT
using the 1.82-m Plaskett telescope, showing the new object at R.A. =
17h58m22s.57, Decl. = +50d47'34".3 (equinox 2000.0), which is 2".3 east and
1".2 N north the core of the faint galaxy SDSS J175822.33+504733.1, noting
that there is no source visible at this position on the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey DR7 images (to limiting R magnitude about 22) or on the Palomar Sky
Survey. Using the SDSS catalogue star SDSS J175818.72+504702.2 as a
secondary standard and converting the SDSS magnitudes to the Kron_Cousins
system, they derive a differential magnitude of R = 15.85.

COMET 103P/HARTLEY

M. Knight, E. Schwieterman, and D. Schleicher, Lowell Observatory,
obtained and analyzed extensive CN narrowband images of comet
103P/Hartley on five consecutive nights (2010 Aug. 13-17) using the
Hall 1.1-m telescope at Lowell Observatory. Following the removal of
median radial profiles, an oscillating CN gas feature is seen centered
near position angle 350 deg, consistent with a side-on cork-screw jet
morphology; no dust feature other than the tail was visible in R-band
images. Intervals between 15 pairs of matching CN images from various
rotational cycles, coupled with the spacing and the outward motion of
the feature, imply a nucleus rotation period of 16.6 +/- 0.5 hr,
consistent with the result by Meech et al. (2009, BAAS 41, 1029).
Preliminary modeling suggests a moderate obliquity of the rotation
axis and a mid-latitude source location.
Schleicher adds that he obtained six sets of narrowband photometry
of comet 103P on Aug. 11 and 12 (when r = 1.48-1.47 AU) using the Hall
1.1-m telescope, resulting in the following averaged production rates:
log Q(OH) = 27.04; equivalent log Q(water; vectorial) = 27.09;
log Q(NH) = 24.87; log Q(CN) = 24.48; log Q(C2) = 24.56;
log Q(C3) = 23.86; log Afrho(526.0 nm) = 0.93 (cf. IAUC 7342).
There is possible evidence of rotational variability, with values for
CN and C_3 lower by 10 percent on Aug. 12 vs. Aug. 11, while dust was
lower by about 20 percent. The implied very-low-dust-to-gas ratio,
based on Afrho vs Q(OH), matches Schleicher's measurements from the
1991 and 1997 apparitions.

COMET P/2000 Y3 = 2010 Q1 (SCOTTI)

J. V. Scotti, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona,
reports his recovery of comet P/2000 Y3 on images obtained with the 0.9-m
Spacewatch reflector at Kitt Peak:

The object was of stellar appearance, with a hint of a tail to the southwest.
Confirmatory observations on Aug. 20 showed the object to be essentially
stellar. The indicated correction to the prediction on MPC 65937 is
Delta_T = -0.46 day.

The recovery observations, together with accidental pre-recovery
observations on 2009 Sept. 18 by T. H. Bressi with the Spacewatch II
telescope, are given on MPEC 2010-Q19, together with a linked 2000-2010 orbit,
residuals and a current ephemeris.

SUPERNOVA 2010gk IN NGC 5433

J. M. Silverman, C. V. Griffith, M. T. Kandrashoff, and A. V.
Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection
of a low signal-to-noise ratio CCD spectrum (range 340-1080 nm),
obtained on July 19 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast) at Lick
Observatory, shows that SN 2010gk (CBET 2382) is likely of type-Ic
just after maximum brightness. The supernova shows evidence of being
fairly reddened; it has narrow Na I D absorption from the host galaxy
at an equivalent width of about 0.3 nm.

POSSIBLE SUPERNOVA NEAR NGC 1120

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Koichi Itagaki
(Teppo-cho, Yamagata) of an apparent supernova (mag 17.6) on unfiltered CCD
frames (limiting magnitude 19.5) taken on Aug. 20.696 and 21.777 UT using a
0.60-m f/5.7 reflector (+ Bitran BT-214E camera). The new object is located
at R.A. = 2h49m10s.81 +/- 0s.01, Decl. = -14d26'59".8 +/- 0".3 (equinox
2000.0), which is 97" east and 65" south of the center of NGC 1120 (but also
near another faint galaxy, so spectroscopy may be necessary to determine the
host galaxy). Nothing is visible at this position on Itagaki's
past frames (including one from 2000 Nov. 23.60 at limiting mag 19.0) or on
the Digitized Sky Survey. The discovery image is posted at website URL

reports confirmation of the variable at mag 16.8 on unfiltered CCD frames
(limiting mag 19.0) taken remotely using a 0.25-m f/3.4 refrector (+ SBIG
ST-10XME camera) at the RAS Observatory near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A., on Aug.
21.412, yielding position end figures 10s.78, 59".8. Yusa has posted his

SUPERNOVA 2010gz IN NGC 599

K. Ayani, Bisei Astronomical Observatory (BAO); and K. Imamura, Okayama
University of Science, report that low-resolution spectra (range 400-750 nm;
resolution 0.5 nm at H-alpha) of 2010gz (cf. CBET 2415), obtained with the
BAO 1.01-m telescope on Aug. 20.8 UT, show that 2010gz is a type-Ia supernova
around maximum. The absorption minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm feature is
blueshifted by about 11400 km/s, assuming the recession velocity of NGC 599 to
be 5527 km/s (Ogando et al. 2008, A.J. 135, 2424).

SUPERNOVA 2010ha IN IC 1764

T. Boles, Coddenham, England, reports the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag 18.9) on unfiltered CCD images taken on Aug. 19.058 UT with a
0.35-m reflector. The new object is located at R.A. = 2h00m24s.84, Decl. =
+24o34'43".3 (equinox 2000.0), which is approximately 19".8 east and 6".7
south of the center of IC 1764. Boles also measured position end figures
24s.85, 43".7 and magnitude V = 19.0 on Aug. 20.497 using an image taken
with a 0.61-m Cassegrain reflector at the Sierra Stars Observatory, Alpine
County, California (limiting mag 20.5). Nothing is present at this position
on Boles's images from 2008 Feb. 10 and 2005 Aug. 28 (limiting mag 19.5) or
on Digitized Sky Survey plates from 1991 Oct. 9 (limiting red mag 20.5) and
1988 Oct. 7 (limiting blue mag 21.0). J. Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia,
using a remotely operated 50-cm reflector (+ STL6K camera + clear filter)
at New Mexico Skies Observatory, Mayhill, NM, U.S.A., obtained a confirming
image on Aug. 20.393 (limiting mag 20.5), yielding position end figures
24s.84 +/- 0s.01, 43".7. An image taken by Brimacombe can be viewed at

SUPERNOVA 2010hb IN UGC 2537

T. Boles, Coddenham, England, reports the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag 17.5) on an unfiltered CCD image taken on Aug. 24.007 UT with a
0.35-m reflector. The new object (which was confirmed at V magnitude 17.6
on Aug. 24.502 remotely using a 0.61-m Cassegrain reflector at the Sierra
Stars Observatory, Alpine County, California; image limiting mag 20.5), is
located at R.A. = 3h07m01s.66, Decl. = +46o37'20".2 (equinox 2000.0), which is
approximately 31".3 west and 4".3 north of the center of UGC 2537. Nothing
is present at this position on Boles's images from Mar. 2 and Aug. 5
(limiting mag 19.5) or on Digitized Sky Survey plates from 1989 Oct. 5
(limiting red mag 20.5) and 1989 Sept. 8 (limiting blue mag 21.0).

VARIABLE STAR M31N 2010-08a

Regarding the report on CBET 2412 of a possible new nova in M31,
designated M31N 2010-08a, subsequent reports suggest that the object is
some sort of variable star that is readily visible on older reference images.
Koichi Nishiyama (Kurume, Japan) and Fujio Kabashima (Miyaki, Japan) note
that a star of red mag 18.8 in the USNO-B1.0 catalogue is located at R.A. =
0h43m28s.269, Decl. = +41o41'25".26 (equinox 2000.0), and they provide
the following magnitudes for this star from their own unfiltered CCD frames
taken with a Meade 200R 0.40-m f/9.8 reflector (+ SBIG STL1001E camera):
2008 Oct. 18.577 UT, 19.2; 2009 Oct. 20.528, 19.1; 2010 June 16.754, 18.0;
July 17.752, 17.8; Aug. 14.815, 18.5.
Also, Kamil Hornoch, Astronomical Institute, Ondrejov, reports that
the following magnitudes of M31N 2010-08a were obtained from CCD frames
taken by himself using the 0.65-m telescope at Ondrejov: Aug. 19.071 UT,
R = 18.38 +/- 0.05; 19.075, I = 16.53 +/- 0.07; 19.089, V = 19.8 +/- 0.15.
Hornoch inspected archival images taken by J. Gallagher and P. Garnavich
using the 0.91-m telescope at Kitt Peak, yielding the following R-band
magnitudes: 2006 Jan. 6.084, 19.27 +/- 0.04; 25.086, 19.42 +/- 0.06.
The variable is well visible on Digitized Sky Survey red and infrared
images but is not visible on a blue image. Hornoch suggest that that the
object is not a nova, but very likely a red long-period variable star.
Additional unfiltered CCD magnitudes for M31N 2010-08a: Aug. 17.968,
18.0 (R. Ferrando); 19.984, 18.1 (Ferrando); 20.001, 18.2 (C. Segarra).

NEW VARIABLE STAR IN CYGNUS

K. Itagaki, Yamagata, Japan, reports (via H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University)
his discovery of a new variable star during his CCD survey using a 0.21-m
reflector on Aug. 23.745 UT. A confirming image taken with a 0.60-m reflector
on Aug. 23.778 (when its unfiltered magnitude was about 13.8) yields the
position as R.A. = 20h51m26s.19, Decl. = +44d05'23".6 (equinox 2000.0). No
object was detected at this position on a survey reference image taken on 2008
Aug. 7.668 (limiting mag about 17.5), but it has gradually brightened in 2010.
Other available unfiltered CCD magnitudes for the variable: 2009 Dec. 19.450,
[16.5 (observed at Tochigi station); 2010 Feb. 20.798, 15.6 (at Tochigi); Apr.
3,768, 15.1; May 8.720, 14.9; June 2.619, 14.7. The outbursting FU Ori-type
star HBC 722 (e.g., see http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=2808) is also
detected on Itagaki's recent survey image. Yamaoka notes that a very faint
(mag about 20) object can be seen on the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) F plate
taken on 1990 Sept. 11, but cannot on other DSS images including an N plate
from 1994 Sept. 12. Yamaoka also notes that the new object is a bright source
in the mid-infrared region (IRAS and AKARI) but was not detected in the
near-infrared region (such as 2MASS), and it is embedded in a massive star-
forming region. Also, nearby V1704 Cyg is at mag about 16.5 on Aug. 23 on
Itagaki's image, which has been posted at http://www.k-itagaki.jp/images/p.jpg
with the new variable marked.

D. Higgins, Canberra, Australia; P. Pravec and P. Kusnirak, Ondrejov
Observatory; J. Pollock, Appalachian State University; J. Oey, Leura, N.S.W.,
Australia; M. Husarik and G. Cervak, Skalnate Pleso Observatory; and D. E.
Reichart, K. M. Ivarsen, J. B. Haislip, and A. LaCluyze, Physics and Astronomy
Department, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, report that photometric
observations obtained during July 23-Aug. 24 reveal that minor planet (2121)
is a binary system with an orbital period of 37.1 hr. The primary shows a
period of 2.90640 +/- 0.00002 hr, and it has a lightcurve amplitude of 0.20
mag. Mutual eclipse/occultation events that are 0.2-mag deep indicate a
secondary-to-primary mean-diameter ratio of 0.41 +/- 0.02. The secondary
rotates synchronously with the orbital motion and shows an amplitude of 0.06
mag in the combined lightcurve of the system. Due to the high solar phase,
the observed eclipse/occultation events also describe the satellite-shadow
transit and satellite's passage through the parent body's shadow.

NEW VARIABLE STAR IN CYGNUS

U. Munari, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Padova Astronomical
Observatory; and P. Valisa and S. Dallaporta, "Asiago Novae and Symbiotic
Stars" (ANS) collaboration, have observed the new variable star discovered
by K. Itagaki and announced on CBET 2426. A low-resolution, absolutely
calibrated spectrum (range 480-880 nm; 0.42 nm/pixel) was recorded on Aug.
26.825 UT with the 0.6-m telescope of the Schiaparelli Observatory in Varese,
equipped with a multi-mode grating spectrograph. The noisy spectrum displays
a very red, featureless continuum with absorptions visible for H_beta, Mg I
(517.4 nm), and Na I (518.9, 519.5 nm), as well as emission from H_alpha and
the Ca II triplet in the far red (849.8, 854.2, 866.2 nm). The H_alpha
emission line displays a narrow P-Cyg profile. The emission component has an
integrated flux of 1.6 x 10**(-13) erg cm**(-2) s**(-1), a full-width-at-
half-maximum (FWHM) of 350 km/s, and an heliocentric radial velocity of +60
km/s. The absorption component has an equivalent width of 0.5 nm and an
heliocentric radial velocity of -160 km/s. The overall spectral appearance
is compatible with a classification as an FU Orionis-type star. CCD
photometry, properly corrected for color equations, provides the following
magnitudes for the new variable on Aug. 26.83: B = 16.93, V = 14.91, R_c =
13.57, I_c = 12.31.

SUPERNOVA 2010he IN NGC 1120

A. Harutyunyan, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG); and S. Benetti and
F. Bufano, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio Astronomico
di Padova, report that a spectrum of the possible supernova near NGC
1120 announced on CBET 2421, obtained on Aug. 29.13 UT with the 3.5-m TNG
reflector (+ DOLORES; range 350-800 nm, resolution 1.1 nm), shows it to be
a type-Ia supernova several days after maximum light. The best fits to this
spectrum found by GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383; publicly
available at https://gelato.tng.iac.es) are with spectra of type-Ia supernovae
at 7-10 days after maximum light, adopting a recession velocity of 8518 km/s
for NGC 1120 (Huchra et al. 1993, A.J. 105, 1637; via NED). The expansion
velocity deduced from the Si II 635.5-nm absorption is then about 10000 km/s.

VARIABLE STAR IN CEPHEUS

H. Mikuz, Crni Vrh Observatory, reports that a new star-like variable
object (R = 16.2 +/- 0.1) was discovered by B. Mikuz on four filtered CCD
images (limiting mag 18.5) taken during Aug. 22.905-22.933 UT in the course
of the PIKA project at the Crni Vrh Observatory, using the 0.60-m f/3.3
Cichocki telescope. The new object is located at R.A. = 21h05m12s.29, Decl.
= +69d12'55".3 (equinox 2000.0). Nothing is visible at this position on
PIKA archival images taken on 2004 Nov. 27 (limiting mag 17.0) and 2006
Sept. 3 (limiting mag 18.7) or on several Palomar Sky Survey and 2MASS
images from the Aladin database. Further investigation of the Simbad and
VizieR databases shows no candidate object at this position. Additional
photometry by B. Mikuz: Aug. 26.865, R = 16.5 +/- 0.1; Aug. 29.837, R =
16.8 +/- 0.1.

reports her recovery of comet P/2005 U1 (cf. IAUC 8624) on images
obtained with the 2.2-m University of Hawaii reflector at Mauna

THE EDGAR WILSON AWARD 2010

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory announces that the
2010 Edgar Wilson Award for the discovery of comets (cf. IAUCs
6936, 8962, 9066) is being divided among the following four
individuals for three different comets: Rui Yang (Hangzhou,
Zhejiang, China) and Xing Gao (Urumqi, Xinjiang province, China)
for P/2009 L2 (cf. IAUC 9052); Don Machholz (Colfax, CA, U.S.A.)
for C/2010 F4 (cf. IAUC 9132); and Jan Vales (Idrija, Slovenia)
for P/2010 H2 (cf. IAUC 9137).


COMET 237P/2010 L2 (LINEAR)

Comet P/2010 L2 = 2002 LN_13 (cf. IAUC 9152) has been given
the permanent designation 237P.


2010 NV_1 AND 2010 OR_1

Additional apparently asteroidal, long-period objects have been
discovered that have retrograde orbits, including 2010 NV_1 (cf.
MPEC 2010-N54; MPO 179641) and 2010 OR_1 (cf. MPEC 2010-O26; MPO
179643).

COMET P/2010 C2 (LINEAR)

G. V. Williams has identified comet P/1999 XB_69 (cf. IAUC
7370) in WISE spacecraft data, the first observation tabulated here:

Taylor (Rayle, GA, U.S.A., 25-cm reflector), by H. Sato (Tokyo,
Japan; remotely, 25-cm reflector, RAS Observatory, Mayhill, NM,
U.S.A.; 20" coma and 30" tail in p.a. 260 deg), by L. Elenin
(Lyubertsy, Russia; remotely, 45-cm f/2.8 astrograph, ISON-NM
Observatory, Mayhill; 50" tail), and by T. Yusa (telescope data
same as for Sato; faint 25" tail in p.a. 252 deg) given below. K.
Kadota (Ageo, Japan, 25-cm reflector) reports coma diameter 0'.5
and a 0'.6 tail in p.a. 250 deg on Aug. 11.70 UT.

COMETS C/2009 W6-W11 (SOHO)

Further to IAUC 9156, additional near-sun presumed comets have
been found on SOHO website images, all Kreutz sungrazers except for
C/2009 W8 (non-group). C/2009 W6 was small (peak mag about 7.5).
C/2009 W10 was very diffuse (mag about 8), while C/2009 W11 was
condensed (peak mag about 7-7.5). The others' peak magnitudes were
about 7.5-8, with C/2009 W7 being slightly diffuse and the other
two being small and stellar in appearance.

G. Hug reports his recovery of comet P/1998 U4 (cf. IAUCs 7042,
7043) on CCD images obtained with a 0.56-m reflector located near
Scranton, KS, U.S.A. (astrometry tabulated below); in stacked
images, the object showed a possible faint broad tail at p.a.
roughly 260 deg, spanning 60 deg in p.a. and about 10"-12" long.

COMET P/2010 P4 (WISE)

Amy Mainzer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, reports the discovery
of a comet (discovery observation tabulated below) with a tail
extending at least about 150" toward the southwest in images
obtained with the WISE satellite. Following posting on the 'NEOCP'
webpage, ground-based CCD astrometrists at three observatories have
failed to find cometary appearance, noting the object's magnitude
to be 21.3-21.9 during Aug. 11-16.

Further to IAUC 9160, additional Kreutz sungrazers have been
found on SOHO website images. C/2009 W12 (peak mag about 7.5-8)
and C/2009 W16 (mag about 8) were very diffuse, while C/2009 W13
(mag about 7.5-8), C/2009 W14 (mag about 7), and C/2009 W15 (mag
about 7-7.5) were slightly diffuse. C/2009 X2 (mag about 7.5)
showed a "slight tail", according to K. Battams. C/2009 W8 (cf.
IAUC 9160) was barely visible in C3 images.
