SUPERNOVA 2010ip

D. Milisavljevic and R. Fesen, Dartmouth College, report that a
low-dispersion optical spectrum (range 440-770 nm) of 2010ip (cf. CBET 2491)
was obtained with the 2.4-m Hiltner telescope (+ Mark III) at MDM Observatory
on Oct. 12.4 UT. Comparison with a library of supernova spectra using the
"Supernova Identification" tool (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666,
1024) suggests a normal type-Ia event around maximum light at redshift z =
0.052.

SUPERNOVA 2010ir IN ESO 491-12

J. L. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories, reports that an optical spectrum
(range 370-930 nm; resolution 0.7nm) of 2010ir (cf. CBET 2494) was obtained
with the APO 3.5-m telescope (+ DIS) on Oct. 14.4 UT. The spectrum shows
broad He I and Balmer lines in absorption. After cross-correlation with a
library of supernova spectra using SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666,
1024), 2010ir is found to be most similar to the type-IIb supernova 2000H at
13 days after maximum.

SUPERNOVA 2010it IN NGC 1417

G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and University
of Texas; J. Vinko, University of Szeged; and J. C. Wheeler, University of
Texas, report that a spectrum (range 430-1000 nm) of 2010it (cf. CBET 2498)
was obtained by J. Caldwell on Oct. 15 UT with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly
Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph). Cross-correlation with a
library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID;
Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that 2010it is a type-Ia
supernova a few days before maximum brightness. The velocity of the Si II

Universe (IPMU), University of Tokyo; and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, J. Haislip,
A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze, University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of the CHASE project, report the discovery
of an apparent supernova (mag approximately 17.4) on unfiltered images taken
on Oct. 15.26 and 16.09 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 1' telescope located at
Cerro Tololo. The object, designated SN 2010iv, is located at R.A. =
4h03m52s.23 +/- 0".2, Decl. = -43o25'38".5 +/- 0".2 (equinox 2000.0); it is
right on the top of the small galaxy and completely dominating the visible
light. Nothing is visible at this position on a stack of seventeen 40-s
archival images taken between 2009 Nov. 5.13 and 2010 Aug. 13.28 (limiting
mag 19.5).

G. Pignata, Universidad Andres Bello; and G. Folatelli, IPMU, University
of Tokyo, on behalf of the Millennium Center for Supernova Science, report on
optical spectroscopy (range 355-890 nm) of 2010iv (see above) and the object
announced on CBET 2499 (and now designated 2010iu), obtained with the SOAR
4.3-m telescope (+ Goodman HTS) on Oct. 16.3 UT. The spectra show both
objects to be normal type-Ia supernovae, a few days before maximum.
Following cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using SNID
(Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), 2010iv is found to be most similar
to SN 2003du at three days before maximum; SNID also provides a best-fit
redshift of 0.074 for 2010iv. SN 2010iu is most similar to SN 1992A at five
days before maximum (via SNID). The Si II 597.2-nm line appears stronger in
SN 2010iu than in SN 1992A. SNID also provides a best-fit redshift of 0.040
for SN 2010iu.

SUPERNOVA 2010iw NEAR UGC 4570

Stanley C. Howerton, Arkansas City, KS, U.S.A.; A. J. Drake, S. G.
Djorgovski, A. Mahabal, M. J. Graham, and R. Williams, California Institute
of Technology; J. L. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories; M. Catelan, Pontificia
Universidad Catolica de Chile; E. C. Beshore and S. M. Larson, Lunar and
Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona; and E. Christensen, Gemini
Observatory, report the discovery by Howerton of an apparent supernova in
public Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) images:

SN 2010 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
2010iw Oct. 14.66 8 45 15.01 +27 49 21.8 16.4 12".9 W, 3".4 S

Further magnitudes for 2010iw: June 11.16 UT, [19.0 (CSS); Oct. 17.50,
16.3 (Howerton, remotely with a 0.6-m LB-1 telescope, Rodeo, NM, U.S.A.).
They note that the new object lies 5".4 east and 1".1 north from a galaxy
seen in Sloan Digital Sky Survey images with measured redshift z = 0.109;
the current luminosity of 2010iw appears too high for it to be a regular
supernova associated with this distant galaxy. The host galaxy is thus is
likely to be UGC 4570 (at redshift z = 0.0215).

SUPERNOVA 2010ix IN PGC 3583

Denis Vida and Filip Novoselnik, on behalf of the "La Sagra Sky Survey"
(LSSS) supernova search team (which includes also Ivica Skokic, Robert Gregic,
David Gostinski, Salvador Sanchez, Jaime Nomen, Reiner Stoss, Bill Yeung, Juan
Rodriguez and Miguel Hurtado), report the discovery of an apparent supernova
(magnitude 18.0) on two CCD images (limiting mag about 20.0) taken on Oct.
16.825 and 16.839 UT with a 0.45-m telescope. The new object is located at
R.A. = 1h00m02s.49, Decl = +41d42'57".6 (equinox 2000.0), which is 13".7 west
and 4".4 south of the nucleus of the presumed host galaxy, PGC 3583.
Additional approximate magnitudes for 2010ix, from unfiltered images unless
otherwise noted: 1986 Nov. 27.186 UT, [22 (Digitized Sky Survey, red plate);
2010 Oct. 17.871, 18.2 (LSSS). The LSSS image from Oct. 16 has been posted

ORIONID METEORS 2010

P. Jenniskens, SETI Institute, reports that the strong Orionid meteor
shower activity of 2006-2009 may repeat this year, for a final year in this
sequence, according to M. Sato and J.-I. Watanabe (2007, PASJ 59, L21);
they ascribed the 2006-2009 activity to dust trails of comet 1P/Halley that
were formed by meteoroids ejected in the years 1401 BC and 12 BC. The
orbital evolution of the dust is affected by the 1:5 to 1:8 mean-motion
resonances with Jupiter. This so-called "filament" component is expected
to be in the earth's path again around Oct. 20-25 in 2010, giving rise to
a higher-than-normal Orionid-shower activity that is relatively rich in
bright meteors. Sato expects a peak ZHR of 40-50 /h, at the same level
as in 2009. As case studies, Sato calculated peak times of Oct. 21 9h UT
for the 1266 BC dust trail and Oct. 25 4h UT for the 911 BC trail, both
having dust survive in the 1:6 resonance with Jupiter.

SUPERNOVA 2010iy IN ESO 281-14

J. Maza, M. Hamuy, R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, R. Cartier, and F. Forster,
Universidad de Chile; G. Pignata and M. Cifuentes, Universidad Andres Bello;
P. Gonzalez, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; B. Conuel, Wesleyan
University; G. Folatelli, IPMU, University of Tokyo; and D. Reichart,
K. Ivarsen, J. Haislip, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze,
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of the CHASE project,
report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag approximately 17.7) on an
unfiltered image taken on Oct. 18.04 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 5' telescope
located at Cerro Tololo. The new object, which is also present at mag
approximately 16.7 in an image taken on Oct. 19.00, is located at R.A. =
18h36m36s.91 +/- 0".2, Decl. = -47o03'15".7 +/- 0".2 (equinox 2000.0), which
is about 3".1 west and 0".5 south of center of the galaxy ESO 281-14.
Nothing is visible at this position on archival images taken on Sept. 22.09
(limiting mag 18.0) and Sept. 9.14 (limiting mag 18.5).

COMET 238P/READ

H. H. Hsieh, University of Hawaii, reports that observations of 238P/Read
on October 5 UT using the 10-m Keck I telescope on Mauna Kea show that
it has once again become active after last being observed to be active in
December 2005. In a composite image comprising 1140 s of effective
exposure time, the comet exhibits a short, tapered tail approximately 5" in
length pointed in the anti-solar direction (about 75 deg east of north) and a
small amount of coma (comet FWHM = 0".90, measured perpendicular to the
tail, compared to typical stellar FWHMs of 0".85). The total R-band magnitude
(measured inside a 2".0 aperture) was 22.25 +/- 0.05. This comet is notable
for being the second main-belt comet (MBC; Hsieh and Jewitt, 2006, Science
312, 561) to have been discovered, after 133P/Elst-Pizarro. It is now also
the second MBC after 133P to be confirmed to have recurrent activity, a key
indication that sublimation, perhaps modulated by seasonal effects, of
volatile ice (and not a one-time event such as an impact) is responsible for
the observed activity.

SUPERNOVA 2010iz IN UGC 3552

Further to CBET 2498, J. K. Kodros, W. Li, S. B. Cenko, and A. V.
Filippenko report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova on unfiltered
KAIT images:

SN 2010 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
2010iz Oct. 16.55 6 49 50.94 +28 22 22.1 17.2 5".2 E, 5".9 N

Nothing was visible at this position on a KAIT image from Mar. 22.18 UT
(limiting mag 19.0). Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-
objects webpage, Markku Nissinen and Veli-Pekka Hentunen, Varkaus, Finland,
write that they remotely used a 43-cm f/6.8 Global-Rent-a-Scope (GRAS) located
near Nerpio, Spain, to obtain images (limiting mag 21.0) of 2010iz to derive
position end figures 50s.93, 21".8 and magnitude V = 16.8 on Oct. 20.126.
