SUPERNOVA 2010jb IN IC 1615

Colin Drescher, Calamvale, Queensland, Australia, reports the discovery
of an apparent supernova (red mag 15.6) by Stuart Parker (Oxford, Canterbury,
New Zealand) as a member of the Backyard Observatory Supernova Search team,
on unfiltered images taken using a 35-cm Celestron C14 f/6.3 Schmidt-Cassegrain
telescope (+ ST-10 CCD camera) on Oct. 30.614 and 30.615 UT. The new object
is located at R.A. = 1h04m07s.68, Decl. = -51d08'05".4 (equinox 2000.0;
measured by Drescher), which is 6" east and 6" south of the nucleus of the
galaxy IC 1615. Nothing is visible at this position on an image taken by
Parker on Oct. 18.369 (limiting red mag 19.1).

N. Morrell, Las Campanas Observatory, Carnegie Supernova Project, reports
that a spectrum (range 335-956 nm), obtained on Oct 31.24 UT with the Las
Campanas 2.5-m du Pont telescope (+ Boller and Chivens spectrograph), shows
2010jb to be a young type-Ia supernova. Cross-correlation with a library of
supernova spectra via the Supernova Identification tool (SNID, Blondin and
Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) suggests that 2010jb is a normal type-Ia
supernova around one week before maximum brightness, best matching the
spectrum of SN 2003du at six days before maximum light. Assuming for IC 1615
a recession velocity of 7671 km/s (Mathewson and Ford 1996, Ap.J. Suppl. 107,
97; via NED), the minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm absorption is blueshifted
by 11800 km/s.

SUPERNOVA 2010jc IN NGC 1033

D. Milisavljevic and R. Fesen, Dartmouth College, report that a
low-dispersion spectrum (range 450-750 nm), taken on Oct. 31 UT with the
2.4-m Hiltner telescope (+ MKIII) at MDM Observatory following posting on
the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, shows that 2010jc (cf.
CBET 2521) is a type-IIP supernova just after maximum light. Comparison with
a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" tool (SNID;
Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J., 666, 1024) provides good matches with type-IIP
events such as SN 2005cs at three days after maximum.

SUPERNOVA 2010jf

Denis Vida and Filip Novoselnik, on behalf of the "La Sagra Sky Survey"
(LSSS) Supernova Search Team (which also includes Ivica Skokic, David
Gostinski, Robert Gregic, Salvador Sanchez, Jaime Nomen, Reiner Stoss, Bill
Yeung, Juan Rodriguez, and Miguel Hurtado), report the discovery of an
apparent supernova (magnitude 17.7) on three CCD images (limiting mag about
20.0) taken on Oct. 20.008, 20.02, and 20.033 UT with a 0.45-m telescope.
The new object is located at R.A. = 3h40m43s.47, Decl = +1d03'34".0 (equinox
2000.0), which is 14".0 west and 10".3 north of the nucleus of the presumed
host galaxy, PGC 1183175. Additional approximate magnitudes for 2010jf:
1990 Oct. 21.377, [22 (Digitized Sky Survey, red plate); 2010 Oct. 24.763,
18.2 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia, unfiltered CCD; bright moonlight).
The LSSS image from Oct. 20 has been posted (with the red DSS image on the
right) at website URL http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/9140/image000z.png.
Brimacombe's image is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/5111468047/.

D. Milisavljevic, R. Fesen, and J. Parrent, Dartmouth College, report on
a low-resolution spectrum (range 450-750 nm) of 2010jf obtained at the MDM
Observatory using the 2.4-m Hiltner telescope (+ MKIII) on Nov. 2.5 UT.
Comparison with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" tool (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J., 666, 1024) shows
that 2010jf appears to be a spectroscopically peculiar, sub-luminous type-Ia
supernova around maximum light. The spectrum closely resembles that of SN
1986G at one day past maximum.

and Y. L. Radeva, Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC); E. L. Gibb, University
of Missouri at St. Louis; K. Magee-Sauer, Rowan University; and J. V. Keane
and K. J. Meech, University of Hawaii, report: "In collaborative runs in
mid-October, we acquired high-resolution infrared spectra with NIRSPEC at the
Keck Observatory. They reveal strong detections of OH* (prompt emission),
many lines of water and HCN, plus detections of the H_2CO Q-branch (nu_1,
2781 cm**-1), C_2H_6, and CH_3OH. Additional trace species are under
evaluation. The quantitative results given below are provisional."

J. V. Keane and K. J. Meech, University of Hawaii, and the above team
members report that on Oct. 19.5 UT the slit was oriented along the direction
of the CN jet (p.a. 350 degrees). H_2O was symmetric about the nucleus, but
C_2H_6 was extended in the jet's direction. Preliminary production rates,
rotational temperatures, and abundance ratios (percent relative to water) are:
H_2O (23 lines), 4.8 +/- 0.1 x 10**27 s-1, 75 +/- 2 K, 100 percent; C_2H_6
(many Q-branches) 2.96 +/- 0.23 x 10**25 s-1, 75 K (assumed), 0.61 percent;
CH_3OH (Q-branch nu_2-band), 11.2 +/- 0.72 x 10**25 s-1, 75K (assumed), 2.3
percent.

B. P. Bonev, Catholic University and GSFC; and the above team members
report that on Oct. 22.5 UT the slit was oriented along the sun-comet line.
Spatial profiles for hydrogen cyanide, methanol, ethane, and water are fairly
symmetric about the nucleus. Preliminary production rates, rotational
temperatures, and abundance ratios (percent relative to water) are: H_2O
(20 lines), 7.2 +/- 0.29 x 10**27 s-1, 77 +/- 2 K, 100 percent; HCN (12
lines), 1.7 +/- 0.1 x 10**25 s-1, 80 K (assumed), 0.24 percent; C_2H_6 (many
Q-branches), 2.96 +/- 0.23 x 10**25 s-1, 75 K (assumed), 0.61 percent;
CH_3OH (Q-branch nu_2-band), 11.2 +/- 0.72 x 10**25 s-1, 75 K (assumed), 2.3
percent.

supernova (mag about 17.0) on unfiltered CCD frames taken with a 0.41-m
reflector on Nov. 3.12 UT, with a confirming image obtained on Nov. 4.02
(yielding the transient's magnitude as about 16.9). The new object is
located at R.A. = 2h06m52s.23, Decl. = +44o34'17".5 (equinox 2000.0), which
is about 7".8 east and 5".5 south of the center of NGC 812. Nothing is

COMET 103P/HARTLEY

J. Bauer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL); R. Walker, Monterey Institute
for Research in Astronomy; A. Mainzer and J. Masiero, JPL; R. Beck, F. Masci,
and R. Cutri, IPAC, California Institute of Technology; E. Wright, University
of California at Los Angeles; and the WISE team -- in collaboration with M.
A'Hearn (University of Maryland), K. Meech (University of Hawaii), C. Lisse
(Applied Physics Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University), and Y. Fernandez
(University of Central Florida) -- report initial results based on 12- and
22-micron infrared photometry of comet 103P taken during May 10-11 (when the
comet was at r = 2.3 AU, Delta = 2.0 AU) by the Wide-field Infrared Survey
Explorer (Wright et al. 2010, A.J. 140, in press). Analyses of the trail
signal present in the stacked image with an effective exposure time of 158.4
seconds yields optical-depth values near 6 x 10**-10 at a mean anomaly of 0.3
deg trailing the comet nucleus, in both 12- and 22-micron bands. Analysis of
the dust trail yields beta-parameter values ranging from approximately 1 x
10**-4 to 2 x 10**-4, consistent with derived mean trail-grain diameters
ranging from approximately 1 to 12 mm. Photometry of the coma at 22 microns,
combined with data from the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope obtained by
J. Pittichova, K. Meech, T. Riesen, and H. Kaluna on May 22 [R-band Af(rho) =
0.84 +/- 0.04 in log cm units], provide constraints on the particle size
distribution expressed as a log-number-density/log-mass slope term (alpha).
Initial results yield values of alpha = -0.88 +/- 0.10 in log N(particles/
m^2)/[log mass(kg)] units, steeper than that found for the inbound particle
fluence during the Stardust encounter of comet 81P (Green et al. 2004, J.
Geophys. Res. 109, E12S04). The extracted nucleus signal at 12 microns is
consistent with a body of average spherical radius of 0.73 +/- 0.10 km,
assuming an emissivity of 0.9.

NOVA IN M33: M33N 2010-10a

Koichi Nishiyama, Kurume, Japan; and Fujio Kabashima, Miyaki, Japan,
report the discovery of an apparent nova (mag 18.1) in M33 on seven 40-s
unfiltered CCD frames (limiting magnitude = 19.1) taken around Oct. 26.654
UT, using a Meade 200R 0.40-m f/9.8 reflector (+ SBIG STL1001E camera); they
measure the new star's position to be R.A. = 1h33m57s.12 +/- 0s.02, Decl. =
+30d45'53".2 +/- 0".4 (equinox 2000.0), which is 80" east and 377" north of
the center of the galaxy M33. Additional magnitudes for the nova, designated
M33N 2010-10a (provided by Nishiyama and Kabashima unless noted otherwise):
1989 Dec. 4, [18.7 (Digitized Sky Survey; infrared plate); 1991 Oct. 5, [18.7
(DSS; red plate); 2010 Oct. 16.713, [19.0; 17.618, [18.8; 27.606, 17.7;
28.160, 18.5 (T. Yusa, Osaki, Japan); 29.605, 18.5; Nov. 1.606, 18.8. Yusa's
unfiltered CCD images from Oct. 28 were taken remotely using a 0.25-m f/3.4
reflector at the GRAS Observatory near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A., following posting
on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage; he posted his image at
http://www.palette.furukawa.miyagi.jp/s ... 101028.jpg.

A. W. Shafter, San Diego State University; M. J. Darnley and M. F. Bode,
John Moores University, Liverpool; R. Ciardullo, Pennsylvania State
University; and K. A. Misselt, University of Arizona, report that a spectrum
of M33N 2010-10a, obtained on 2010 Oct. 28.37 UT with the Low-Resolution
Spectrograph on the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope, reveals broad Balmer
emission (FWHM about 4800 km/s), along with weaker emission features of
He I and Fe II superimposed on a flat continuum. These observations confirm
that the object is a nova and that it is a member of the "Fe IIb" or "hybrid"
spectroscopic class.

SUPERNOVA 2010jk

K. Sarneczky, Konkoly Observatory; and Z. Kuli, Hungarian Astronomical
Association, report the discovery of a possible supernova (mag 20.2) in 20-min
co-added unfiltered CCD images taken on Oct. 31.825 UT with the 0.60-m
Schmidt telescope at Konkoly Observatory, Piszkesteto, Hungary. The new
object -- which is also present at mag 20.4 in an image taken on Oct. 29.873,
and at mag 20.0 on Nov. 1.824 -- is located at R.A. = 1h12m35s.63, Decl. =
+15d28'28".5 (equinox 2000.0), which is 0".5 north of the center of the
presumed host galaxy, SDSS J011235.64+152828.0 (whose r magnitude is 20.9).
No point source is visible at this position on a co-added 20-min reference
image taken on 2010 Oct. 7 (limiting mag 21.5). An animated gif showing the
variable is posted at http://titan.physx.u-szeged.hu/~sky/poss-sn.gif.

J. Vinko, University of Szeged; J. C. Wheeler and E. Chatzopoulos,
University of Texas; and G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics and University of Texas, report that a spectrogram of 2010jk was
obtained on Nov. 4.11 UT with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario
Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by M. Shetrone. The spectrum shows a blue
continuum with no obvious spectral features, except a few noisy peaks between
780 and 850 nm. The lack of broad features prevents unambiguous
identification, but the appearance of the spectrum is consistent with that of
a very young type-II (probably a type-IIn) supernova. The SuperNova
IDentification code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) gives SN 1997cy
(cf. IAUC 6708) as the best resembling template (without the broad H-alpha
component) at z = 0.28. If this were the correct redshift, then the measured
apparent magnitude of 20.0 would correspond to absolute magnitude -20.3, which
may suggest an over-luminous type-IIn supernova. Further monitoring of this
interesting object is encouraged.

SUPERNOVA 2010jl IN UGC 5189A

S. Benetti and F. Bufano, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio
Astronomico di Padova, on behalf of a larger collaboration, report that a
spectrogram (range 380-810 nm, resolution 1.1 nm) of the possible supernova
reported on CBET 2532, obtained on Nov. 5.08 UT by the Service Telescope
Operator Team with the Ekar-Copernicus 1.82-m telescope (+ AFOSC), shows the
new object to be a type-IIn supernova. The spectrum is dominated by a very
strong H-alpha emission with a complex profile -- the broad component of
H-alpha having a FWHM of about 14000 km/s; H-beta is also present with a
similar profile. He I emission lines are also clearly visible in the
spectrum. Comparison of the observed spectrum with a library of supernova
spectra via the "GELATO" code (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383;
available at website URL https://gelato.tng.iac.es/login.cgi) shows some
resemblance to that of SN 1996al (Benetti et al., in preparation) around
maximum light.

J. Vinko, University of Szeged; G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center
for Astrophysics and University of Texas; T. Pritchard, Pennsylvania State
University; and J. C. Wheeler and E. Chatzopoulos, University of Texas, also
report that 2010jl is a type-IIn supernova. A spectrum obtained on Nov. 5.5
UT with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution
Spectrograph) by M. Shetrone shows a bright, blue continuum with strong,
intermediate-width emission lines (FWHM about 2000 km/s). Besides strong
Balmer lines, He I features at 587.6 and 706.5 nm are clearly visible. The
He I feature at 667.8 nm is detectable but blended by the extended red
wing of H-alpha. The presence of H and He lines indicates that the transient
is a type-IIn supernova where the intermediate-width emission lines are
formed in a shocked circumstellar medium enveloping the supernova.
Simultaneous measurements with Swift/UVOT in the ultraviolet bands confirm
that the transient is ultraviolet-bright, as expected for young, interacting
supernovae. Further follow-up observations in all wavelengths are encouraged.

SUPERNOVA 2010jj IN NGC 812

J. M. Silverman and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley;
and R. J. Foley, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, report that
inspection of a CCD spectrum (range 330-760 nm), obtained on Nov. 5 UT with
the 10-m Keck I telescope (+ LRIS), shows that 2010jj (CBET 2530) is a
type-IIn supernova. The object exhibits a relatively featureless, very blue
continuum with intermediate-width (FWHM about 1800 km/s) Balmer emission lines
superposed. He I 587.6-nm emission is also visible.

SUPERNOVA 2010jl IN UGC 5189A

M. Yamanaka and T. Okushima, Hiroshima University; A. Arai, Kyoto Sangyo
University; and M. Sasada and H. Sato, Hiroshima University, report that they
obtained low-resolution optical spectra of 2010jl (cf. CBETs 2532, 2536) on
Nov. 5.8 UT at the Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory, Hiroshima University (R =
400), and at the Koyama Astronomical Observatory, Kyoto Sangyo University
(R = 500). The spectra show emission lines of H-beta and H-alpha at 470-490
and 640-670 nm. These features have multiple emission lines with more-narrow
and broader components. The FWHM velocities of the more-narrow components
were measured to be roughly below 500, while the FWHM of the broader
components are 18000 km/s. The spectra also exhibit weak emission lines of
He I at 590 and 710 nm. These profiles are similar to those of the luminous
type-IIn supernova 2006tf at a month after maximum light (Smith et al. 2008,
Ap.J. 686, 467).
