COMET 29P/SCHWASSMANN-WACHMANN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

J. M. Trigo-Rodriguez, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas
and Institut d'Estudis Espacial de Catalunya, suggests that comet 29P is
currently experiencing an unusual outburst. His analysis of multi-band
images taken on Feb. 3.181 UT by A. Sanchez (Gualba, Spain, 0.31-m reflector)
shows a stellar appearance with an apparent diameter of 15" and the following
magnitudes measured through a 10" aperture: V = 11.9, R = 11.7, I = 11.5.
F. Colas and L. Maquet, IMCCE, Observatoire de Paris, report that resolved
coma images obtained with the Pic du Midi 1-m reflector) on Feb. 3.96 show a
coma diameter of 10"; when combined with a typical ejection velocity of 300
m/s, this suggests that the outburst occurred around Feb. 2.52. Additional
observations obtained in the last month suggest a progressive increase in
activity since mid-January, from an inactive 40-day period in which the comet
remained close to R magnitude 16 in a 10" aperture. Additional recent 10"-
aperture magnitudes for comet 29P supplied by Trigo-Rodriguez: 2009 Dec.
20.04, R = 16.4 (Trigo-Rodriguez, Montseny, Spain, 0.18-m reflector); Dec.
25.25, R = 16.1, I = 15.9 (Sanchez); 2010 Jan. 9.97, V = 15.7, R = 15.0, I =
15.4 (S. Pastor and J. A. Reyes, Molina de Segura, Spain, 0.40-m reflector);
Jan. 10.07, R = 15.6 (Sanchez); Jan. 12.19, R = 15.7 (Sanchez); Jan. 27.18,
R = 15.2 (Sanchez); Jan. 27.18, R = 15.1, I = 15.2 (D. Rodriguez, Villalba-
Madrid, Spain, 0.25-m reflector). Colas provides the following additional
magnitudes for 29P: Feb. 3.87, R = 11.6 (F. Kugel, Chante Perdrix
Observatory, Dauban, France; 0.20-m presumed); Feb. 4.02, R = 11.7 (Pic du
Midi).
Recent visual total-magnitude and coma-diameter estimates reported to
the Central Bureau: 2009 Sept. 23.19 UT, 11.7, 0'.7 (J. J. Gonzalez, Leon,
Spain, 0.20-m reflector); 29.20, 11.5, 1'.5 (Gonzalez); Oct. 26.21, 11.3, 3'
(Gonzalez; zodiacal light); Nov. 14.28, 11.9, 1'.5 (M. Goiato, Aracatuba,
Brazil, 0.22-m reflector); 18.11, 11.8, 0'.6 (Gonzalez); 24.14, 11.9, 1'.5
(Gonzalez); 25.72, 13.2, 0'.8 (C. Wyatt, Walcha, NSW, Australia, 0.25-m
reflector); Dec. 12.15, 12.0, 2' (J. J. Gonzalez, Leon, Spain, 0.20-m
reflector); Feb. 4.06, 11.5, 0'.4 (Goiato). Recent total unfiltered CCD
magnitude estimates submitted by K. Kadota (Ageo, Saitama-ken, Japan,
0.25-m reflector) in the course of his cometary astrometry program: 2009
Oct. 30.80, 13.2; Nov. 30.75, 12.8; Dec. 30.66, 12.0; 2010 Jan. 11.68, 13.6.

SUPERNOVA 2010U IN NGC 4214
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

G. H. Marion, Texas A&M University and University of Texas; J. Vinko,
University of Szeged; and J. C. Wheeler, University of Texas, report that a
spectrum of 2010U (cf. CBET 2161) was obtained on Feb. 7.3 UT with the 9.2-m
Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by M.
Shetrone. The spectrum is dominated by a blue continuum with strong, narrow
P-Cyg emission features of H I, Ca II, Na I, and possibly O I. The spectrum
shows strong resemblance to those of luminous blue variable (LBV) outbursts
("supernova impostors"; e.g., Van Dyk et al. 2000, PASP 112, 1532; Smith et
al. 2009, Ap.J. 697, L49). The absolute magnitude of the transient (using
the host-galaxy distance of 3.3 Mpc from NED) is -11.7, which is typical for
such events. The expansion velocity, calculated from the minimum of the
narrow P-Cyg features, is about 900 km/s, which also supports the
classification.

SUPERNOVAE 2009mx AND 2009my
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

D. Milisavljevic and R. Fesen, Dartmouth College, report that a low-
dispersion spectrum (range 430-790 nm) of 2009mx (cf. CBETs 2095, 2120),
taken on Feb. 6.4 UT with the 2.4-m Hiltner telescope (+ CCDS) at MDM
Observatory, supports a type-Ia supernova classification. Comparison
with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification"
tool (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ., 666, 1024) provides a good match
with the type-Ia event 1991bg at approximately 54 days post-maximum light.
Spectra of 2009my (CBETs 2095, 2120) show it to be a type-II supernova
approximately 2 months after maximum light; SNID comparison templates best
match the type-IIP event 2006bp at 65 days post-maximum.

SUPERNOVA 2010Y IN NGC 3392
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Giancarlo Cortini, Predappio, Italy, reports the discovery an apparent
supernova (mag about 15.9) on several unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag
near 18.5) taken on Feb. 8.87 UT during his supernova-search program with a
0.35-m telescope at Monte Maggiore Observatory. The new object is located at
R.A. = 10h51m03s.95, Decl. = +65d46'47" (equinox 2000.0) which is 15" east
and 7" south of the center of the galaxy NGC 3392. Nothing is visible at
this position on his previous image of the same field taken on 2009 Dec.
27.81 (limiting mag about 18.5) or on Palomar Sky Survey red and blue plates.
Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage,
D. Milisavljevic and R. Fesen, Dartmouth College, report confirmation of
2010Y as a supernova, based on low-dispersion optical spectra (range
430-790 nm) obtained with the 2.4-m Hiltner telescope (+ CCDS) at MDM
Observatory on Feb. 9.3 UT. Comparison with a library of supernova spectra
using the "Supernova Identification" tool (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007,
Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that the spectrum closely matches that of the type-Ia
supernova 1994D approximately one week before maximum light. Weak C II
658.0-nm absorption is visible.

SUPERNOVA 2010aa IN NGC 692
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

L. A. G. Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports his discovery of an
apparent supernova (magnitude 16.4 +/- 0.2) on six unfiltered CCD images
obtained on Feb. 9.771 UT at the Bronberg Observatory, the position of the
new object given as R.A. = 1h48m43s.21, Decl. = -48d39'00".7 (equinox 2000.0),
which is 11" east and 7" south of the core of the type-Sbc galaxy NGC 692.
Nothing is visible at this position Digitized Sky Survey images (limiting red
mag 20.5), on the previous image of this galaxy taken at the Bronberg
Observatory on 2009 Dec. 17.793 (limiting mag 18.7), or on earlier images by
Monard. Monard also discovered the type-Ia supernova 2007st (cf. CBETs 1177,
1190) in this galaxy. Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-
objects webpage, P. Marples (Loganholme, Queensland, Australia) writes that
S. Parker (Oxford, Canterbury, New Zealand) found that 2010aa is clearly
visible at red mag 15.7 in a prediscovery CCD image taken by Parker using a
35-cm Celestron C14 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector on 2010 Feb. 4.443; the
magnitude and position end figures 43s.24, 01".3 were measured by C. Drescher
(Calamvale, Queensland, Australia) using Astrometrica with the USNO-B1.0
catalogue, from Parker's image.

PROBABLE NOVA IN OPHIUCHUS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Hideo Nishimura
(Miyawaki, Kakegawa, Shizuoka-ken, Japan) of a 9th-magnitude possible nova
on two 13-s frames taken on Feb. 18.845 UT using a Minolta 120-mm f/3.5 lens
and a Canon EOS 5D Digital camera mounted on a Takahashi EM100 equatorial
telescope. Nakano measured limiting mag 12.7 from Nishimura's JPEG image,
mag 9.4 for the variable, and the following precise position (uncertainty
+/- 4"): R.A. = 17h26m32s.19, Decl. = -28d49'36".3 (equinox 2000.0).
Nishimura notes that nothing is visible at this position on his frames taken
during each month in the span 2009 Feb.-Oct. 15 and on 2010 Feb. 2, 4, 5,
7, and 13.84 UT (limiting mag 11). Nakano forwards the following position
end figures for the presumed nova from an unfiltered CCD exposure taken by
K. Itagaki on Feb. 19.778 using a 0.30-m f/7.8 reflector (+ Bitran BT-214E
CCD camera) at the Takanezawa station, Tochigi-ken, Japan: 32s.08, 38".5
(magnitude 9.0); his image is posted at the following website URL:
http://www.k-itagaki.jp/images/pn-oph.jpg. Nakano further notes that K.
Kadota (Ageo, Japan, 0.25-m f/5 reflector + SBIG ST-9E CCD camera)
measured mag 8.9 and position end figures 32s.11, 39".0 from four 4-s
exposures (limiting mag 16.5) taken on Feb. 19.825.
After posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, R.
Kaufman (Bright, Victoria, Australia) writes that a green-channel unfiltered
DSLR image taken with a Canon 400D camera on Feb. 15.651 and 15.656 shows
the probable nova at mag approximately mag 9.4 (close to the V band). An
image by Kaufman taken with a 55-mm f/4 camera lens (three stacked 30-s
frames) is visible via the following website URL: http://tinyurl.com/yfol3nu.
S. Kiyota (Tsukuba, Japan) reports that an image taken remotely on Feb. 19.48
with a 30-cm reflector (+ FLI IMG1024 CCD camera) near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A.,
yields position end figures 32s.11, 38".5 and the following magnitudes for
the new object: B = 10.36, V = 9.53, R_c = 9.02, I_c = 8.40. Kiyota adds
that nothing is visible at this position on Digitized Sky Survey plates.

SUPERNOVA 2010ad IN UGC 10143
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Further to CBET 2169, J. Rex, S. B. Cenko, W. Li, and A. V. Filippenko,
University of California, report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova
on unfiltered KAIT images:

SN 2010 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
2010ad Feb. 18.57 16 02 13.56 +15 56 18.8 16.0 5".2 E, 3".8 N

Nothing is visible at this position on a KAIT image from 2009 Sept. 9.15 UT.
J. M. Silverman, M. T. Kandrashoff, and A. V. Filippenko, University
of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a low-signal-to-noise-
ratio CCD spectrum (range 360-990 nm), obtained on Feb. 19 UT with the 3-m
Shane reflector (+ Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2010ad is a
supernova, probably of type II. Cross-correlation with a library of
supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification" code of Blondin
and Tonry (2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2010ad is most similar to
the spectrum of the type-IIb supernova 1993J about a week past maximum
brightness.

I. Agnoletto, Universita Degli Studi di Padova; F. Bufano and S. Benetti,
Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, report
that a spectrogram of 2010ac (cf. CBET 2174), obtained on Feb. 20.32 UT with
the European Southern Observatory's New Technology Telescope (+ EFOSC2; range
394-747 nm; resolution 1.6 nm), shows it to be a type-Ic supernova at about
25 days from maximum. Assuming a recession velocity of 5071 km/s (from
Willmer et al. 1991, A.J. 101, 57; via NED, http://nedwww.ipac.caltech.edu),
the comparison of the observed spectrum with a library of supernova spectra
via the "GELATO" code (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383, available at
website URL https://gelato.tng.iac.es/login.cgi) shows strong resemblance to
those of supernovae 1997B and 1997ei at 25 days after maximum.

NOVA OPHIUCHI 2010 No. 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University, forwards a report by K. Imamura and
K. Tanabe, Okayama University of Science (OSU), that a low-resolution
spectrum of the presumed nova announced on CBET 2176, obtained on Feb.
19.850 UT with the 0.28-m OUS telescope (+ DSS-7), shows a clear H_alpha
feature with P-Cyg profile, which suggests that the object is a genuine
classical nova. An absorption minimum of the H-alpha feature is about 1000
km/s, blueshifted from the emission peak. Their spectrum can be seen at
http://blog-imgs-32-origin.fc2.com/t/n/ ... 100219.png.
Yamaoka also forwards a report from M. Fujii (Kurashiki, Okayama,
Japan), who obtained a low-resolution spectrum of this object on Feb. 19.86
UT with his 0.28-m telescope. In addition to the Balmer lines with P-Cyg
profile, Fujii noticed a Fe II (37, 42, 49) emission feature, which
suggests that the variable is a "Fe II class" nova. He measured that the
blueshift of the H-alpha absorption minimum from the emission peak is
about 700 km/s, and the equivalent width of Na I D lines is about 0.4 nm.
Fujii's spectrum can be seen at the following website URL:
http://otobs.org/FBO/fko/nova/pn_oph_20100219.gif.
E. Guido and G. Sostero write that their unfiltered CCD images taken
remotely through a 0.25-m f/3.4 reflector at the GRAS Observatory near
Mayhill, NM, U.S.A., on Feb. 20.5 UT shows the new object at magnitude
about 9.4 at the following precise position: R.A. = 17h26m32s.15, Decl. =
-28d49'41".8 (equinox 2000.0; UCAC2 catalogue reference stars). Their
animation showing a comparison between their image and the archival
Digitized Sky Survey plate is posted at website URL http://bit.ly/b7JFXt.

SUPERNOVA 2010ab IN PGC 27294
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

M. Fraser, S. Valenti, and S. Smartt, Queens University, Belfast; and
M. Sullivan and I. Hook, Department of Astrophysics, Oxford University,
report that a spectrum of 2010ab (cf. CBET 2172) was obtained at the William
Herschel Telescope (+ ISIS; range 320-1000nm) on Feb. 22.10 UT. The spectrum
shows a blue continuum with Balmer lines typical of a young type-II supernova.
Cross-correlation of the observed spectra with a library of supernova spectra
has been performed with the "GELATO" code (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488,
383, https://gelato.tng.iac.es/login.cgi). The spectrum gives a good match
to those of several type-II supernovae close to maximum light. A redshift of
z = 0.046 was estimated from the narrow Balmer lines of the host galaxy.
Taking the magnitude of 17.8 reported on CBET 2172, SN 2010ab has an absolute
mangitude of -18.6, which is consistent with the magnitude of bright type-II
supernovae.
